Unit 5: Lesson 4

The King of kings Bible reference… Isaiah 9:6-7, 11:1-5

Revelation 1:5, 17:14 Lesson aim… To tell the children about Jesus being the King of kings. He is

different to all the other kings—he is the ruler of the kings of the world. Jesus is the kings’ king, the King of kings.

Main message… Jesus is the King of kings.

Memory verse… In Numbers 23, verse 19 we can read about God that ‘Whatever he promises, he does’. See page 55 for instructions and page 56 for a copy of the verse.

Vocabulary… descendants—children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and lots and lots of greats-grandchildren. So they are people that are related to you—your children and their children and their children…

Story preparation… Print pages 59 and 60 to use for the Introduction. For the People in the Bible and the Story, print pages 66-67 and cut out the crowns (by cutting along the dotted lines). For the Story, you need to make one big 3D crown (which you can hold) with gold cardboard. You will also be using the same visual aid cards as for last week. Print pages 61-63, cut out the cards and add cards (ii)-(v) to a large piece of cardboard (or wall, board or easel) in the same manner as last week leaving room at the top for (i). Add (ii)-(iii) down the left hand side and (iv)-(v) down the right hand side. Back (i) and (v) with blu-tack to attach the cards when indicated.

Introduction…

You will need pages 59 and 60. You could read each line addressing it to the class as a question, for them to answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’. Decide beforehand how you want the children to indicate their answer (eg. hands up, nod for ‘yes’ and shake head for ‘no’, etc.).

‘People in the Bible’…

“We’ve been learning about a lot of kings this year. They were kings of the Israelites, God’s special people. [point to King Saul] There was King Saul. And then [point to King David] King David.

“And then, just as God promised King David, the next king was one of King David’s sons—King Solomon [point to King Solomon]. Then there were lots more kings. Let’s remember some of them: [Put each crown (you previously cut out from pages 66-67) down on the floor and say each king’s name as you do. Begin with the kings that are on the chart.] King Saul, King David, King Solomon, King Jeroboam, King Abijah, King Baasha, King Nahab, King Elah, King Zimri, King Omri, King Ahab and King Josiah. There were even more kings, but these are the kings we’ve talked about.”

Story…

[As you tell this Story you will be reading a couple of verses in your class Bible—place a bookmark in it so that you can find them easily. You will also be showing the large crown (see Story preparation) and referring to cards used last week (see pages 61-63). You will need cardboard (or a wall, board or easel) to attach cards to (like last week). Add cards when indicated in brackets.]

“Last week we heard that in the Old Testament part of the Bible God promised a special king. [add (i)] And we heard that God’s promised king is Jesus:

[add (ii)] “Jesus is a descendant of King David

[add (iii)] “Jesus is king of all people.

[add (iv)] “Jesus will be king forever

“Last week we read from the Old Testament about God’s promised king. In a book called Isaiah we can read more about God’s promised king. One of the things it says is that God’s promised king will obey God [add (v) below (iv)] this says ‘obey God’—God’s promised king will always obey God. He won’t disobey God.

“Jesus never sinned and disobeyed God like all the other kings [point to crowns on floor/table from Introduction]. Jesus always obeyed God.

“We’ve looked at what the Old Testament promised about Jesus, and promises made in the New Testament before Jesus was born. Now we’re going to look at the very last book of the Bible called Revelation [read from class Bible]. In Revelation chapter 1, verse 5, it says that ‘Jesus Christ… is the ruler of the kings of the world.’ So Jesus is not just a king, but The king. He rules all the other kings. He’s the boss of all the other kings in the world.

“Later in the book of Revelation (17, verse 14) Jesus is called the ‘King of kings’. That’s great, isn’t it! Jesus is the King of kings, the ruler of all the kings of the world. Jesus is king of all the people and all the countries in the world [point to (iii)]. And Jesus is king of all the other kings. God’s Son, Jesus [At this point produce the big crown with ‘Jesus’ on it. Point to the word ‘Jesus’ and say that this says ‘Jesus’] is the king of all the other kings. [Put the crown on top of all the flat crowns which were put on the floor/table in the Introduction, making the point that Jesus is the king of all the other kings.]

Conclusion…

“These are the promises that we have heard that God made about the special king:

[point to (ii)] “God promised that the special king would be a descendant of King David. [point to ‘manger’] Jesus was a descendant of King David.

[point to (iii)] “God promised that the special king would be king of all people and all countries. And that is what Jesus is. Jesus is the King of kings, the king of everyone [point to ‘Jesus’].

[point to (iv)] “God promised that the special king would be king forever. Jesus didn’t stay dead. He is alive and he is king forever.

[point to (v)] “God promised that the special king would always obey God. That’s just what Jesus did. He always obeyed God. Jesus never sinned. Jesus never disobeyed God.

[point to (i)] “God’s promised king is Jesus.

[point to large crown] “Jesus is greater than any other king. Jesus is the greatest king that there ever was and that there ever will be. Jesus is the King of kings!”

Clapping rhyme…

This clapping rhyme can be done as an echo, with the teacher saying one line and the children then repeating that line. Every line has four claps: two with hands clapping on knees followed by two claps with hands. Print page 57 if you want a copy of the words.

What about us?…

“Remember our memory verse: in Numbers 23, verse 19 we can read about God that ‘Whatever he promises he does.’ Today’s story tells us that God did keep his promises about his promised king. God did what he promised. God sent Jesus who is all the things that God promised. So we can trust God to keep his promises (a memory verse from last year was Psalm 12:6, ‘The promises of the LORD can be trusted.’).

“It’s wonderful that Jesus is the King of kings and that he is king forever. Jesus is the best king ever. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be learning more about what it means that Jesus is King. We can thank God that he kept his promises about Jesus, the promised king, in such a wonderful way.”

Pray…

Thanking God that he keeps his promises. Thanking God that he kept his promises about Jesus. Praising God that Jesus is the King of kings and that he is king forever.

Activity suggestions…

1. Picture page

Print page 69 onto white paper (one per child), page 64 onto yellow paper if possible (one per three children), and page 65 onto yellow paper, if possible (one per about five children) and cut out crowns before the lesson (or use the crowns as templates to cut crowns from gold paper). In the lesson, the children paste the large crown from page 64 under ‘Jesus is the King’ and the smaller crowns (from page 65) under ‘of kings’. Children can decorate Jesus’ crown with pre-cut cellophane jewels, glitter glue, star stickers, etc.

2. Pasta Crown

This activity will not be able to be given to the children to take home until next week!

For the lesson, you will need child-friendly PVA glue, gold or silver spray paint and some pasta, preferably a few different types (eg, spiral, bow tie, macaroni). Before the lesson, cut a crown shape (similar to the one on page 68) from sturdy cardboard and print the caption from page 58. In the lesson, the children write their name on one side of the crown and paste the pasta onto the other side of the crown, making patterns and a decorative edge. The crowns are then collected to be spray painted by the teacher at home. When spray painting, lay them on newspaper and only spray one side. Leave to dry before moving. The teacher then pastes the caption on the back of the crowns before giving them back to the children next week. (Note: If there are two teachers in the class,

it may be possible for one teacher to take the crowns outside and spray paint them, but please consider the logistics of this before deciding.)

3. Free crown creation

If possible print the following pages onto coloured paper. Before the lesson, print page 64 (one for every 3 children), 68 (one per child) and 65 (one for every six to eight children—just cutting the page into squares with a crown on each) and cut out the captions from page 58 (one per child) and the crowns. Collect together a selection of pieces of cardboard and coloured paper. In the lesson, place the cardboard, paper and the various sized crowns and the captions on the table.

The idea of this activity is for the children to think of a way to illustrate the fact that ‘Jesus is the King of kings’. They have a selection of crowns and cardboard—each child needs to think of how they can show that Jesus is the King of every other king. They might use the crown on page 68 and paste smaller crowns on it, or they might make a 3D crown with cardboard and attach the smaller crowns to it, or they might make a collage, or they might think of a unique idea of their own. It’s to get the children thinking about the concept that there is one king who is king of all the rest. It is important that the caption is added to their creations. Once they have completed their activity, each child can explain to you why they made their particular creation.

4. Kings and crowns

This activity is suitable for younger children. Print page 70 for each child, or print page 71 and cut out a crown for each child and paste this on a large piece of paper. In the lesson read the caption and talk about Jesus being the king of every king. Then the children draw kings under the large crown.

Memory verse…

In Numbers 23, verse 19, we can read about God that ‘Whatever he promises, he does’. When learning this verse remind the children that ‘he’ is God.

Here are two options for actions to accompany the verse (the first more sedate than the second):

Option 1: seated version
