WOLVES

A wolf is bigger than a dog but a brown bear is bigger than it. There are wolves in Europe. In Spain

there are wolves only in the mountains of Asturias and León. There are also wolves in America and in

Asia. They have got grey fur, a pointy nose and very sharp teeth.

Wolves are carnivore and they catch other animals to eat, like boars or deer. When they can't find a

wild animal to catch, they usually kill sheep or cows. They always hunt in packs and they share their

food. They can hunt in the daytime or at night but they don't usually attack humans. In fact, when they

smell humans, they often hide from them or escape.

Wolves are very intelligent and their senses of smell and sight are excellent. They can run very fast

and they can swim too but they don't love water. They can live for sixteen years in the wild. They usually

have from three to six babies, called cubs, every two years.

Humans hunt wolves because wolves kill their cattle or because they want their fur. Right now, wolves

in Spain are in danger of extinction. There are some natural reserves where people can't kill them like

Cabarceno, in Cantabria. Twenty-two wolves are living there now. At the moment, there is a group of

people there. They are taking photos of a wolf and her cubs. The four wolf cubs are playing with their

mum. The rest of the pack is sleeping behind some rocks.
