Electromagnetic Inductiong

• When a conductor is moved across a magnetic field so as to cut gthrough the lines of force (or flux), an electromotive force (e.m.f.) is produced in the conductor.

Rules

Faraday’s laws of electromagnetic induction state:y g(i) ‘An induced e.m.f. is set up whenever the magnetic field linking thatcircuit changes.’(ii) ‘The magnitude of the induced e.m.f. in any circuit is proportional to the rate of change of the magnetic flux linking the circuit.’

L ’ l t tLenz’s law states:‘The direction of an induced e.m.f. is always such that it tends to set up a current opposing the motion or the change of flux responsible for inducing that e m f ’inducing that e.m.f. .

Coupling Coefficientp g

• The coupling coefficient k is the degree or fraction of p g gmagnetic coupling that occurs between circuits.

• If there is no magnetic coupling, k = 0. • If the magnetic coupling is perfect (all the flux produced i th i li k ith th d k 1in the primary links with the secondary, k = 1• tightly coupled - most of the flux produced by current in one coil passes through the otherp g• loosely-coupled - If the coils are spaced apart, only a part of the flux links with the second, and the coils are termed
