Scientists classify (sort) things as living or non-living. Students learn how to sort things by whether they are alive, never alive, or dead. To be considered alive, something has to meet all the items on the checklist.

Alive things eat, grow, breathe, and defend.

Launch!Sing and line dance to Not Alive as a class.

Use your own moves or those listed on the next page.

You’ll never see a car with a family,You’ll never see your toys begin to grow,And when the grass gets long in your front yard,The house won’t grab the mower and begin to mow...

Cause they’re not alive!

They’re non-living things,Non-living things,They don’t even know that they can’t grow,And I can prove that they can’t move.They can’t shade the light when it gets too bright,And they can’t have kids...Man, that’s just the way it is!

Non-living things 2x

But I’ll bet that you have a family,And I’ll bet you’ve noticed that the grass can grow,And when it gets too high in your front yard,Someone needs to grab the mower and begin to mow...

Cause it’s alive!

We’re all living things,All living things,I bet you know that you can grow,And you can prove that you can move. You can shade the light when it gets too bright,And we can have kids... ...man, that’s just the way it is!

We’re all living things 2x

ExplainWhat makes something alive? Uncle says everything around us is either living or non-living. Non-living things are either dead or never alive.

How do you know if something is alive? It eats, breathes, defends, and grows! Drawings of rabbits do not eat. They do not breathe. They do not defend. They do not grow. Therefore, drawings never live.

Do animal puppets live? No! Puppets do not eat. They do not breathe. They do not defend. They do not grow. Aunty says animals do all these things. Since puppets do not, they do not live.

Just for FunMake a pet rock! Find a smooth river rock and decorate it. Is your new pet alive?

What’s in a Word?Puppet comes from the Latin word pupa (doll).

Literature LinkThe Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi tells the story of a puppet who wishes to become a boy. How do you know this storyisfiction?
