Unit 4: THE ATMOSPHERE
1. The atmosphere: composition and structure
2. The atmosphere that surronds us
3. Why the atmosphere is important
4. Air pollution
5. Our atmosphere’s natural resources
1. THE ATMOSPHERE: composition and structure
Atmosphere: is a layer of gases that surrounds the Earth. The
gases form air.
COMPOSITION. Atmosphere is a mixture of gases: nitrogen (78%),
oxygen (21%), water vapour, carbon dioxide, ozone…
The atmosphere keeps attached to the Earth’s surface because of gravity.
Atmospheric pressure is the pressure that the mass of the air in the
atmosphere exerts on the Earth’s surface.
VOCABULARY: closest (más cercana), weather phenomena (fenómenos
meteorológicos), cloud (nube), ozone layer, shooting star (estrella fugaz).
1. TROPOSPHERE (thickness: 10 to 15 km)
Layer closest to the Earth's surface.
Where most of the Earth's weather phenomenaoccur: wind, clouds, precipitation, hurricanes...
2. STRATOSPHERE (thickness: 35 to 40 km)
We can find the ozone layer which protectsus from theSun's ultraviolet rays.
3. MESOSPHERE (thickness: 30 km)
The temperature decreases with altitude and canbe as low as -90ºC.
Is the middle layer.
4. THERMOSPHERE OR IONOSPHERE (thickness: 420 km)
Shooting stars become visible.
Particles are ionized and it is very important forradio communications.
5. EXOSPHERE
It contains very little air.
STRUCTURE: The layers of the Earth’s atmosphere.

2. THE ATMOSPHERE THAT SURROUNDS US
Clouds and precipitation
VOCABULARY: droplet (gotita), fall down (caer), snow, hail (granizo).
Types of precipitation
Activity 1. Answer the questions:a)What are the clouds?
b)How are clouds made?
c)What are the types of precipitation?
a) What are the clouds?Clouds are droplets of water suspended in the atmosphere.
b) How are clouds made?Clouds are made when water from seas and oceansevaporates, and water vapour rises, cools down andcondenses forming droplets and clouds.
c) What are the types of precipitation?Precipitation is when water falls down from the clouds. There are three types of precipitation:
- rain, when water falls down in liquid form.
- snow, when water falls down in solid form.
- hail, when water falls down as ice.
3. WHY THE ATMOSPHERE IS IMPORTANT
1. The atmosphere filters dangerous radiation andprevents it from reaching the Earth’s surface.
2. It contains oxygen and carbon dioxide: the gases weneed to live.
3. Wind originates in the atmosphere, which connects thewater cycle between the oceans and continents.
4. The atmosphere allows life on Earth to exist.
Activity 2. What changes in the atmosphere does human activity
create or what are the main environmental problems?
VOCABULARY: acid rain (lluvia ácida), greenhouse effect (ef invernadero),
global warming (calentam global), climate change (cambio climático).

Actividad 3. Responde a las siguientes cuestiones:
a) ¿Qué actividades humanas utilizan combustibles fósiles?
4. AIR POLLUTION
Activity 4. Answer the following questionsa) Define air pollution
b) How can the atmosphere pollution be caused? Write examples of each one of them.
c) Activity 9 on page 41.
d) Which are the main types of pollutants? Write examples of each one of them.
e) What are the consequences of atmospheric pollutants?
f) How do you define smog? In which Spanish cities can we find smog?
g) Some measures to reduce the air pollution are:Use public transport, turn off the light when we don't use it, reuse plastic bag
Write other three measures.

VOCABULARY: pollution (contaminación), forest fire (incendio forestal),
stagnant water (agua estancada), lightning storm (tormenta eléctrica),
marsh area (zona pantanosa), pollutant (contaminante), pollen grain
5.OUR ATMOSPHERE’S NATURAL RESOURCES
The two main characteristics of renewable energies are:
1. They do not run off
2. They are clean energy because the don’t usually emitany pollutants
Examples: hydroelectric power, geothermal energy, windpower and solar energy. Wind power and solar energy arerelated to the atmosphere.
VOCABULARY: natural resources (recursos naturales), renewable energies (energías
renovables), run out (agotarse), wind power (en eólica), solar energy, inexhaustible

WIND POWER
Wind power is produced by the wind
Wind power has some disadvantages:
1. Sometimes no energy is produced: when there is no
wind or extremely strong wind
2. Noise of the turbines
3. Visual pollution
4. Can harm birds
