More generic opportunities that are suitable for most or all HDR student, will be communicated to you by the GRS Graduate Educations Officers.

Researcher Training Framework

The UWA Researcher Training Framework (RTF) is a professional development tool developed by the GRS and the UWA library to enhance researcher excellence at UWA.

This interactive, online tool helps to identify the skills and attributes useful for a chosen research career, links these skills and attributes to training events offered at UWA and beyond, and describes these skills and attributes in a language familiar to potential employers.

You can use the RTF in discussion with your supervisors, mentors and career advisors when planning a research development strategy.

Resources and Training

A GRS Resources and Training webpage lists development opportunities under the headings of academic writing skills, communication skills, research skills and professional development.

Upcoming events are highlighted in the GRS Newsletter sent each month to all enrolled HDR students and their supervisors.

Events are also promoted using the GRS Events Calendar, which can be filtered according to RTF domain. Many GRS events are managed through EventBrite.

Academic Writing & Editorial Assistance

Editorial Assistance

Your supervisor can advise you about structure, style and general editing issues but within limits. Your thesis must express your voice and reflect your ability to write and argue with clarity.

The GEOs will also inform you of the wide range of academic writing development opportunities available to you throughout candidature.

You can seek paid editorial assistance with your academic writing but the assistance is restricted. The GRS webpages provides advice about using a professional editor and the contact details of editors that have offered their services to the GRS.

Nationally, there is some concern that HDR students may be using online services to commission thesis writing. This practice is commonly called ghost writing or contract cheating. You are encouraged to discuss the difference between editorial assistance and ghost writing with your supervisors.
