Dear Parents/Guardians,

The holiday season is nearly here. It is hard to believe we have almost completed the fi rst

term of our Kindergarten Journey. This month, we move into the popular “Gingerbread

Man” theme. Over the next several weeks, your child will be involved in a variety of

activities, including:

n comparing different versions of the gingerbread man story

n making candy patterns on gingerbread man cutouts

n being introduced to simple addition and subtraction

n estimating handfuls of buttons, cubes, and gingerbread counters

n learning about Canadian coins, and using pennies, nickels, and dimes to purchase

materials to decorate a class gingerbread man

n being introduced to the concept of area by covering a gingerbread man with

marshmallows

n graphing our favourite gingerbread man story

n baking and decorating gingerbread man cookies

n reciting gingerbread man poems and songs

Our Dramatic Centre will be set up as a bakery fi lled with various gingerbread recipes,

plastic baking ware, and sealed containers fi lled with spices to encourage role-playing and

creativity. Afterwards, it will turn into a drama stage where students can dress up in different

costumes and use simple masks to reenact the gingerbread man story. The Listening Centre

and Reading Centre will provide literature-rich environments fi lled with fi ction books on

the gingerbread man and nonfi ction books on baking. The Discovery Centre will be a delight

for the senses, with playdough scented with spices such as cinnamon, allspice, ginger, and

nutmeg. Other exciting activities, including a gingerbread Memory game, will be at our

Mathematics Centre.

Your child will continue to bring home weekly poems. Don’t forget to review the poem

and complete the home-school connection activity. Keep your eyes open for our latest and

greatest “Big Book” that will be circulating throughout our kindergarten homes. Remember

to add your valuable comments at the end of the book.

Our letters of the month are b for gingerbread baby, j for jujubes and jellybeans, and

d for decorations. Our number of the month is 2. Students will continue to work through

a variety of activities that reinforce the proper formation of both letters and numbers.

Once again, thank you for your continued support. We look forward to our fourth exciting

month on our Kindergarten Journey.

Focus

Students will place the correct number of buttons on a gingerbread man that has a numeral (between 0 and 10) written on it.

Materials

n Gingerbread Man Cutout (BLM 4.1.1)n scissorsn brown construction paper (enough to trace 11 gingerbread men)n penciln collection of small buttonsn small plastic container with lidn gluen Counting Buttons activity sheet (two pages) (BLM 4.1.2)n black felt markern 11 x 17-inch paper

PreParation

n Photocopy the Gingerbread Man Cutout. Cut out the gingerbread man, and trace it 11 times onto brown construction paper. Cut out the gingerbread men, and label them from 0 to 10.

n Photocopy the activity sheet Counting Buttons (one copy of each page per student).

n Place the collection of buttons in the plastic container.

teaching the lesson

1. Have the students sit in a large group circle. Spread out the 11 numbered gingerbread men, in random order, in the middle of the circle. Explain that you would like to put the gingerbread men in order from 0 to 10. Ask:n Who can find the gingerbread man with the number zero?

Select a student to identify the gingerbread man. Place the gingerbread man at the start of a line. Ask the students:

n What number comes after zero?

Select a student to identify the gingerbread man with the number 1. Have the student place it next to the gingerbread man labelled “0.”

Continue this process until the gingerbread men have been placed in order from 0 to 10. Review the order by pointing to each number and having the students identify each number aloud.

Mathematics

You may wish to laminate the gingerbread men cutouts for future use.

LESSON 1 COuNTING BuTTONS

You will need to enlarge the second page of Counting

Buttons (on 11 x 17-inch paper) so that students have enough space to glue buttons on the gingerbread men.

2. Explain to the students that the number printed on each gingerbread man tells them how many buttons he should be wearing. Ask the students:n How many buttons would you place on the first gingerbread man?

(Answer: 0)n How many buttons would you place on the next gingerbread man?

(Answer: 1)

Select a student to take one button from the container and place it on the body of the gingerbread man labelled “1.” Continue this process for each gingerbread man. Whenever a student places the corresponding number of buttons on the gingerbread man cutout, have that student count the buttons aloud to encourage one-to-one correspondence.

Follow-uP student activity

1. Distribute a copy of the activity sheet Counting Buttons (BLM 4.1.2) to each student.

2. On the first page, have students count the number of buttons on each gingerbread man and print the corresponding number on the line below.

3. On the second page, have students look at the number written beside each gingerbread man and glue on the appropriate number of buttons.

extending the idea

n Have the students take a handful of buttons and place them on a paper plate. Ask them to estimate how many buttons they have, then ask them to count the actual number of buttons.

n Observe students’ ability to identify the numbers 0–10 and correctly match each number with the corresponding number of buttons on the gingerbread men (one-to-one correspondence). Use the Rubric sheet, GBLM-2, to record your observations.

Suggested achievement levels:

Level 1 – requires assistance to recognize and count objects from 0 to 10

Level 2 – can recognize and count objects from 0 to 10 with limited assistance (several minor errors)

Level 3 – independently recognizes and counts objects from 0 to 10 with few errors

Level 4 – independently recognizes and counts objects from 0 to 10 with no errors

n Encourage your child to tap the words as you read the poem together.

n Reread the poem. This time, have your child circle all the number words. If your child cannot recognize all the number words, reread the poem slowly, and have your child ask you to stop when he/she hears a number word.

n Have your child print the number (e.g., 2) beside each circled number word.

You may wish to dot the outline of the number, and have your child trace the dots.

To introduce students to the poem, “Counting Gingerbread Men.”

PreParation

n Print the poem on chart paper.n Display the chart paper where all students can see it (e.g., chart stand,

chalkboard, bulletin board).n Photocopy the poem and Home-School Connection on page 75 (one copy

per student). Place the sheet in each student’s “Watch Me Read” Duo-tang. Remember to send the Duo-tang home with the students at the end of the week.

1. Have the students gather around the chart paper. Ask the students to listen carefully as you read the poem aloud. Read the poem aloud a second time. This time, use the gingerbread man pointer to point out the words as you read them. Read the poem again, and have the students be your “echo.” Read one line of the poem, and have the students repeat the line after you. Finally, read (or sing) the poem together.

extending the idea

n Select a student to be the teacher. Have the student use the gingerbread man pointer to point out the words as you read (or sing) the poem together as a class.
