Objective

• Students will show that they are ready to move onto this unit by being able to say the following:

• I can simplify Fractions!• I can write equivalent fractions

Page 3: Unit 3 Proportionality: Ratios and Rates. Objective Students will show that they are ready to move onto this unit by being able to say the following:

Are you Ready

• Before we can start with this unit, we must first review Fractions!

• Simplifying Fractions• Equivalent Fractions

Simplifying Fractions

• Please simplify this fraction: 1524

How did you go about it?

1524

List all the factor of both the numerator and denominator.15- 1, 3, 5, 1524- 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24Circle the GCF (greatest common factor)Divide the numerator and denominator by the GCF15 3 = 524 3 = 8

Equivalent Fractions

• Write me an equivalent Fraction:68

What did you do to find this:

Page 8: Unit 3 Proportionality: Ratios and Rates. Objective Students will show that they are ready to move onto this unit by being able to say the following:

68

In order to find equivalent fractions multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number.

6 x 2 = 128 x 2 = 16

Or you can divide the numerator and denominator by the same number.

6 2 = 38 2 = 4

Can you do them?

• Write equivalent Fractions:12 5 215 6 7

Vocabulary

• Review Words:

• Colon :• Product-answer to a multiplication problem• Quotient – answer to a division problem• Quantity- amount of something.• Unit: the measurement of an amount.

• Divide• Multiply

New Vocabulary• Ratio: a comparison of two quantities. It shows how

many times as great one quantity is to another.• Equivalent Ratios: are ratios that name the same

comparison• Rate: comparison of two quantities that have

different units.• Unit Rate: is a rate in which the second quantity is

one unit. • When the first quantity in the unit rate is an amount

of money, the unit rate is sometimes called the unit price or unit cost.
