DEMOGRAPHICS:Statistics about people and populations.

Example: Age demographics answer questions like: How old do people live to be in South Korea in 2014? What percent of the

population is between the ages of 10 and 20 years old?

DEMOGRAPHY:The statistical study of human populations.

A person who studies demography is called a “demographer.”

WORLD POPULATION:

What can population demographics on a global scale tell us?

COMMON AREAS OF STUDY:

• Population • Birth rate • Death rate • Infant mortality rate • Life expectancy • Reproduction rate • GDP

DEVELOPMENT:A process of social and economic

transformation caused by many cultural and environmental factors.

DEVELOPMENT:Development implies “improvement”:

For example, a region is said to “develop” when more people have access to clean drinking water, when community health improves, or when the standard of living

for average households rises.

DEVELOPMENT:What do you think causes development?
