UNION COUNTY LOCALSOURCE LOCALSOURCE.COM THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2011 — PAGE 25 Time marching on since Union's last football title Fighting Farmers last won North 2, Group 4 in 1993 \i\ Mi Parachini Sports Editor The years keep piling up. The Union football team has not won a slate championship in some time after winning two its first two - in the playoff era - in the l l >70s. its next five in the 1980s and its final three in tlie 1990s. From 1978 to 1993 - a 16-season span Union captured North 2, Group 4 a total of 10 times, which is still the record. The Farmers also reached the champi- onship game two <>l the other six seasons. From 1904-2010 - a 17-season span • Union has not won North 2, Group 4 once aid has onK reached the final twice. Why is that you ask? There are many reasons. Some include coaching and the expan- sion of North 2. Group 4 from lour counties - Warren, Morris, Essex, Union in the old days - to schools now also included from Middlesex, llunterdon, Somerset and Hud- son counties. Some standout resident youngsters have also opted to play at out-of-county parochial schools for one reason or another. Union had the look of a state champion a few times since winning its last crown. Union defeated an 8-0 Elizabeth squad on the road in the 1996 North 2. Group 4 semifi- nals before getting embarrassed in the title game against Montelair at Giants Stadium. The Farmers were winning the 2003 North 2, Group 4 final against Piscataway at Giants Stadium before the game fell apart for them in more ways than one in the fourth quarter. The 2009 squad was 7-0 and riding high heading into a home game against Westfield on the playoff cutoff date weekend. An injury to a key player in that contest was a big reason why the Farmers never won again that season. The 1 W> squad fell a yard short of beating Montelair at Rulgers in the North 2. Group 4 semifinals and getting a shot at Elizabeth in the final. Union was the onh team to heat Elizabeth in the regular season that year. There are four examples of Union having its moments since last winning North 2. Group 4 in 1993. However, those seasons have been few and far between for a program thai was used lo winning championships almost on a yearly basis. Perhaps it"s easier to explain why Union won so much in the past. You can start with one of the greatest coaching stalls in the history of high school football in New Jer- sey. At the lop was Lou Rettino. Assistants included the likes of Fred Stengel, Jim Bene- dict, John Quinn, Gary Zakovic, Carmen Guarino, Jeff Longiuel, diet Czaplinski, Jack DeBarberi and Brian Shanahan. Stengel (Bergen Catholic), Benedict (Sum- mit), Quinn (Roxbury and New Brunswick) and Zakovic (Dover) went on to coach other schools to state titles. Present Roxbury coach Cosmo Lorusso guided Pequannock to consecutive state championships, while present Ridge coach Bill Tracj led Livingston to its only playoff crown. Both played at Union when Rettino was the iiead coach, Lorusso a more promi- nent player at quarterback. Sheridan played on Union's lasl two 11-0 state championships teams his junior and sen- ior seasons in 1991 and 1992. Union went 5-5 lasl year by winning Us final three games. The Farmers also went 5-5 in Sheri- dan's fust year ut the helm in 2007. winning fi\e of their last six to do so. Playoff years in between included an 8-3 finish and one playoff win in 200X and a 7-3 conclusion and no playoff wins in 200'). a sea- son that began with seven straight wins and ended with three consecutive losses. In the century's first decade, 2000-2009. Union was held to a total of live playoff wins in a total of seven playoff seasons. Compared to the decades of tlie 1980s and 1990s, that was a pretty big drop off. "Just making the playoffs now in North 2, Group 4 is a big achievement," Sheridan said. "I can't imagine a better section in New Jer- sey." Sheridan is pleased to have former kean assistant coach Dominie Cuniglio as his offen- sive coordinator. Other assistants include Ryan Comeau, who Sheridan played with at Rutgers and coached with at Newark East Side; Car- men Marano, who is also a 1993 UHS gradu- ate who played on the 1991 and 1 ( >92 state championship teams; Gars Long, who coached with Sheridan at Widener College and Jimmy Collins, who is the defensive backs coach.
