1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.2 GENERAL

The Quadricell separator is designed to effectively remove oil and/or suspended solids from wastewater. Four (4) aerator mechanisms circulate wastewater influent, introduced from a surge tank, which create a frothy layer several inches thick, of which the upper few inches contain the oils and solids.

In operation, an impeller entrains air into the liquid and circulates this air-rich liquid throughout the cell. Oils and solids adhere to the air bubbles created and are carried to the surface where a skimmer removes the froth, directing it into side launders for discharge into a sump. To ensure that processed water is not lost in the skimming procedure, a metal bar (called a weir) is added or removed as needed to raise or lower to a threshold where it meets the upper level of the froth, thus acting to hold back water which would otherwise go into the sump and be reprocessed again.

Chemicals may be added to influence the frothing action (increasing the froth level). With the addition of a frothing chemical the wastewater is de-emulsified thus making possible the freer movement of air bubbles and consequently increases the efficiency of oil and waste separation.

Total process time for each cell is approximately one (1) minute. The heaviest oil-bearing froth is present in the first cell and each succeeding cell contains froth with a lighter impurity concentration.

1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.3 THEORY OF OPERATION

Your USFilter Quadricell Induced Air Flotation (IAF) system is designed to effectively remove free and emulsified oil from water. The Quadricell is sometime referred to as a mechanically induced flotation cell. It is constructed to provide a total water retention time of four minutes or one minute per cell. The time the water is in either the inlet or outlet box is not included in the four minutes.

Each IAF unit consists of a horizontal vessel that is divided into four in-line flotation cells, an inlet box and an outlet box. A diaphragm separates each cell and box. The diaphragms are metal plates welded to the sides of the vessel and are open across the bottom and top to allow passage of water across the bottom and air/gas across the top. Positioned on each side of the vessel is a skimming (launder) compartment.

Note: The word air rather than air/gas will be used from this point for simplicity.

Mounted in the top of and inside each cell is the rotating air induction mechanism, four total. The mechanism consists of a mounting plate, draft tube, shroud and a shaft with a specially constructed impeller. The entire mechanism assembly is bolted and sealed to the top of the vessel. Each mechanism is belt driven by its own electrical motor. Mounted within each of the launders is a skimming shaft that runs the full length of the vessel. On each shaft and at each cell there is a series of adjustable skimming paddles. Typically, there will be six paddles in the first cell and four in each of the three remaining cells. Externally mounted electrical motors drive the skimming mechanisms. For visual observance of the flotation and skimming operation there is a hatch at each cell and on both sides of the vessel.

External to the vessel the flotation system may include piping, associated valves, instrumentation, control panel and a chemical (Polymer) feed system(s). (For specific details of your unit, please refer to the Data Summary Sheet, page 1-1.

The flotation unit will require the continuous injection of a polymer to assist in increasing the size of the oil globule. The globule then floats to the surface of the water and is skimmed off into the launders. In applications where emulsified oil is present it will also require the injection of an emulsion breaker to free the oil up so it can be floated and removed.

1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.3 THEORY OF OPERATION (cont.)

Operation The Quadricell operates in the following manner:

Oil Removal Cycle

At a sufficient distance upstream of the flotation unit, to allow mixing and reaction time, the polymer is constantly injected by a small metering pump to the process water.

A constant level of water is maintained within each cell of the flotation unit by a level controller and control valve mounted on the outlet end of the unit. Water flow to the unit is controlled upstream of the inlet connection. The process water enters the flotation unit near the top of the inlet box and is given a short retention time to further enhance the reaction of the injected polymer. The water then flows downward in the inlet box and under the first diaphragm into the first cell. The rotating impeller part of the mechanism creates a suction, much like a pump, pulling water into the impeller. It also creates a vacuum that pulls air down the draft tube. There is a mixing zone where the air and water come together creating a water that is saturated with very fine air bubbles. The impeller drives the air bubble laden water out through the mechanism shroud directing it to all parts of the cell. As the air bubbles begin to rise to the surface they grow in size and assist in the floating the oil globule and skimming it from the surface. The mechanism design is such that the incoming volume of water passes through the impeller many times before it enters the next cell. The treated water now flows under the diaphragm to the next cell for further treatment. The process water is treated the same in the next three cells as it was in the first. In each cell the water quality is greatly improved over that of the preceding cell.

While all of the above is happening the skimmers are being constantly rotated. The paddle blades are set to lightly dip into the surface of the water and skim off a small amount of water and foam into the side launders. In this water/foam mixture is the oil globules that have been removed from the process water. A constant flow of water and oil exits the launders. Again, as noted above, please refer to The Data Summary Sheet, Page 1-1 for specific details of your flotation system.

2.0 INSTALLATION 2.1 FOUNDATION

Verify and ensure that the Quadricell unit, when it is installed, is level both in its length and width. Any level foundation capable of supporting the unit’s operating weight is acceptable. Anchor-bolt spacing is shown on the assembly drawing #123-968. Although every effort should be made to prevent settling of the foundation after completion, minor movement can be accommodated by adjusting cell weirs (raising or lowering).

2.2 FEED LIQUID

The feed liquid may be either pumped or introduced by gravity. If feed flow rate fluctuations are expected, suitable equipment must be installed to ensure a constant, steady flow. A manual isolation valve should be installed upstream, between the surge tank and the Quadricell unit.

2.3 CLEAR-LIQUID DISCHARGE

The liquid discharge may flow by gravity, if the Quadricell has sufficient elevation and allows the water to flow to the desired discharge location, such as a stream or pond. Slopes of 1/4 or 1/2 inch per foot of steel pipe are generally considered adequate for the flow of water. If the discharge liquid must be pumped, then it may be pumped from the Quadricell discharge box under controlled conditions.

2.4 FROTH-COLLECTING LAUNDERS DISCHARGE

The froth collecting launders are located on the front and back of each tank. When the Quadricell is operated with a gas blanket other than air, the launder discharge pipe must be sealed with a trap or submerged below the surface in the froth-collecting tank. If the floated sludge is to be pumped, it can be pumped directly from the Quadricell sludge-collection launders. Launder flow discharge rates average between from 1% to 5% of the feed flow at design capacity.

3.0 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS After installation procedures have been completed, the startup of the equipment is as follows: 1. Slowly open inlet isolation valves. Finally, open all the way and allow the tank to fill with water

(all four cells). 2. If frothing chemical is required, initiate chemical feed into surge tank. 3. Adjust level-control dial while tanks are being filled with water. 4. When water level reaches the approximate center of the level controller's external cage, readjust

level controller so that water level remains at this mark. Note: The level control opens or closes the outer opening by degrees, thereby allowing the

influent to be sustained at a constant desired level. 5. Now start motors 1, 2, 3 and 4 on the aeration mechanisms. 6. When aerators begin their circulation, start skimmer motors No's 1 & 2. Verify that the rotating

components are in fact rotating freely and in the proper direction. 7. Also slowly open air-inlet valve, regulating froth in accordance with the level of skimming

desired. 8. Inspect discharge end of the unit and determine the number of weirs required. Adjustment of the

weirs begins with the cell at the inlet end of the unit. Individual weirs are adjusted by adding or removing weir strips that are supplied with the unit. It may be necessary to have weir strips on each cell. The amount of strips required will vary with the fluid and froth level to be skimmed. Note: Skimmer arms are best adjusted to clear the weir by a gap of approximately 1/16 to 1/8 inch wide.

9. Re-adjust level control as well as the induced air volume until desired froth level is obtained

thereby making the skimming procedure as highly productive as possible. WARNING: For operator’s safety, shut off skimmer motor prior to adjusting the weirs and the

air intake valve inside the vessel.

4.0 MAINTENANCE 4.6 TORQUE LIMITER BASIC OPERATION

The torque limiter is a protective device that limits the torque when demand exceeds a preset value. This excessive torque may occur as a result of: - Shock load, overload, skimmer jams. However, the limiter automatically re-engages when the cause for the excessive torque has passed, and with usually no resetting required.

4.6.1 Initial Adjustment

These units are mounted between the skimmer drive and shaft at the inlet side of the vessel. Because the required torque’s vary for the units of different size, the torque limiter must be aligned and set before operation of the unit begins. Proceed as follows:

1). Align skimmer drive with shaft tolerance of plus/minus .102mm.

2). Secure motor mount by tightening lock-nuts (these are included).

3). Loosen the torque adjustment bolt. (4 required)

4). Turn the motor on and tighten the torque adjustment bolt (see manufacturer’s

instructions) until slippage is almost totally reduced.

DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. NOTE: Motor must be turned on only after all necessary adjustments have been made to the unit.
