Mas FactosFrida Kahlo married Diego Rivera on August 21, 1929 when he was 42 and she was 22. Kahlo began painting after a life altering car accident that left her immobile for several years. Kahlo's works are often characterized by their suggestions of pain, this was drawn from personal experiences, including her marriage and her numerous operations.Of her 143 paintings, 55 are self-portraits which often incorporate symbolic portrayals of physical and psychological wounds. When asked about her work, she was quoted saying "I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality."
