Ultra is the world’s leading provider of sonobuoys and software defined sonobuoyreceivers with its products spanning the complete spectrum of airborne andshipborne ASW requirements.

Sonobuoys and sonobuoy receivers Innovation in sonobuoys and airborne acoustic processing has enabled Ultra to develop state-of-the-art multistaticactive solutions for the maritime patrol aircraft community.

TRANSDUCERS AND HYDROPHONES The genesis of Ultra’s underwatercapability can be traced back to thespecialised design techniques andhigh-quality fabrication processes itdeveloped decades ago to meet theunique challenges of deep-ocean,high-pressure applications, associated with ASW. Today Ultra’stransducer and hydrophoneofferings include flextensional, tonpilz, segmented rings, stripedrings, bender, and moreconventional ceramic rings, plates, discs and cylinders. In addition, Ultrais recognised for its work inbroadband single crystaltransducers, which has led to itbecoming the US Navy’s preferredsource for this capability.

MULTISTATIC ACTIVE (MSA)Innovation in sonobuoys, software-defined sonobuoy receivers, and airborne acoustic processing hasenabled Ultra to develop state-of-the-art multistatic active solutions for themaritime patrol aircraft community.Ultra’s MSA application enhances alegacy airborne acoustic processors toenable the detection of quietsubmarines, in both deep and littoralwaters. MSA uses multiple sourcesand receivers, positioned in differentlocations, so that echoes from activesources are picked up by a pattern ofreceivers, which take advantage ofmultiple returns from the submarineat multiple aspects. These multistatic

combinations of sonobuoys arecollectively exploited to produce anaccurate target track.

MSA provides the ability to bothenhance the probability and the rangeof detection of potential threats.

SONOBUOYSDue to the proliferation of modern, stealthy submarines, traditional anti-submarine techniques continueto be challenged in their ability todeliver effective submarine detectionand tracking capability. With facilitiesin the US, UK, and Canada, Ultraremains at the forefront of thedesign, development, andmanufacture of air-launched,expendable sonobuoys. Ultra’s latestgeneration of multistatic sonobuoyshave just entered service and they areonce again restoring NATO’s ASWadvantage. In order to enable morenations to access the capabilitiesassociated with the latest generationof sonobuoys, Ultra’s has developedits multistatic active application thatempowers traditional acousticprocessors to achieve the benefitsassociated with multistatic operation.

Through Ultra’s partnership inERAPSCO and Sonobuoy TechSystems(STS), Ultra is able to fulfil all US Navysonobuoy requirements for the P-8,P-3 and MH-60R air platforms.Internationally, STS sonobuoys havebeen selected by more than 20countries to meet their ASW needs.

MINIATURE SONOBUOYSUltra is driving innovation incollaboration with key governmentand industry partners and isundertaking the development of aminiaturised sonobuoy system. Theaim is to create a series of sonobuoysoptimised for carriage and deploymentfrom small patrol aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned air vehicles (UAVs).This will allow non-traditional assets to be successfully introduced into theASW force mix. The miniaturisationactivity encompasses the broadersystem including the sonobuoys, thesonobuoy carriage system, sonobuoyreceivers and the widercommunications network. This exploitsthe Group’s leading capabilities innetwork communications and tacticaldata links such that the platform, andthe sonobuoys it has deployed, cancontribute to the integratedunderwater warfare picture and theASW mission.

SONOBUOY RECEIVERSUltra has over 5,000 receiversinstalled around the world, supporting a variety of helicopters, maritime patrol aircraft, surfacecombatants and laboratories. Ultracontinually builds upon its experiencegained with existing systems, newdevelopments, and technologyadvances to push performance andfunctional envelopes for these highlysophisticated advanced receivers, while reducing the cost per channel. The latest sonobuoy receivers aresoftware-defined wideband solutions, which receive signals over longranges and with very low distortion. The flexibility of the systems allowscustomers to vary data rates, enablinga greater flow of information intoday’s increasingly multistatic ASWoperations. Ultra’s systems save thecustomer weight and power and arecompatible with outputs from areanetworks. Ultra’s products range fromlightweight systems for use on UAVsand helicopters, to the widebandsoftware defined receiver currentlyfound on the P-8 Poseidon maritimepatrol aircraft, which offers theultimate in flexibility andperformance. The wideband receiverhas the ability to manage the RFspectrum dynamically, to find andamplify the signals of interest andremove interference.

Ultra has over5000 receiversinstalled aroundthe world.

Torpedo defence Acoustic torpedo countermeasuresUltra provides a complete range of expendable and towed acoustic countermeasures.

TORPEDO DEFENCEUltra is a world-leader in torpedodefence for both submarines andsurface ships, with systems currentlyoperational with the US Navy, UKRoyal Navy and the Turkish Navy.Using a combination of passive andactive sonars systems, Ultra’stechnology provides platforms withthe ability to detect and classify allknown torpedoes.

To counter the identified threats, thesystems integrate with anti-torpedotorpedoes to automaticallyrecommend the optimum evasioncourse, whilst simultaneously usingboth towed and expendablecountermeasures to confuse anddefeat the threat. Ultra has fieldedtwo Surface Ship Torpedo Defence(SSTD) systems.

Ultra’s Torpedo Warning System(TWS) is a highly automated activeand passive sonar system integratedwith the US Navy’s CountermeasureAnti-Torpedo (CAT) to provide hardkill torpedo defence solutions for US aircraft carriers. Current upgradeswill include active detection of theincoming torpedoes to enable a morerapid and precise anti-torpedoengagement sequence.

Ultra’s Sea Sentor SSTD can be eitherstandalone or incorporated into itsIntegrated Sonar Suite (ISS). As astand-alone system, it is designed tobe operated by minimally-trainedoperators and provide simple operatoractions on sounding a torpedo alert.Furthermore, Ultra’s ISS enables theSSTD function to be augmented byoff-board sensors such as sonobuoys.Ships steaming through a previouslylaid sonobuoy field can therefore re-use the same field for area torpedodefence at no additional cost or effort.Torpedo countermeasures could alsobe deployed by organic assets, such ashelicopters or unmanned air systems, well away from threatened ships.

ACOUSTIC TORPEDOCOUNTERMEASURES As a pre-eminent supplier of acousticcountermeasures, Ultra provides arange of towed and expendable off-board systems to ensure thesurvivability of ships and submarinesin the face of a range of advancedtorpedo threats. Ultra’s family ofacoustic expendables, including acomplete array of NATO standarddevices, is complemented by towedsystems, such as Nixie or Ultra’sflexible towed torpedocountermeasure. The flexible towedtorpedo countermeasure permits anactive countermeasure jammer to betowed in-line with the active-passivetowed receive array. This eliminatesthe need for a separate winch andhandling system, normally associatedwith stand-alone towedcountermeasures.

COUNTERMEASURES Ultra is able to supply a completetorpedo countermeasures sub-systemincorporating Expendable AcousticDevices (EAD), Expendable DeviceLaunchers (EDLs) with a LauncherControl Unit (Remote) and a flexibletowed torpedo countermeasure. Italso can supply individual EADs thathave the ability to ‘hover’ in the watermass or are self-propelled enablingthem to draw the incoming torpedoaway from the intended target.

HULL-MOUNTED SONARUltra’s digital acoustic module hull-mounted sonar (HMS) is acombined active/passive array, withdual-frequency transmit flexibility. This HMS can be operated in omni-directional mode, or in sector searchand employs a range of FM and CWwaveforms to optimise the probabilityof detection and avoid clutter. It has aheavy weather mode to increaseensonification during high sea statesand a close contact mode for detectionand tracking of close targets. Ultra’sHMS also incorporates mine avoidancecapabilities. It can transmit in a widebandwidth to avoid mutualinterference from other ships, enablingincreased freedom of manoeuvreduring multi-ship operations.

ACTIVE-PASSIVE VARIABLE-DEPTH SONARUltra’s family of variable depth sonars(VDS) include both an innovativesingle tow, in-line, horizontalprojector array coupled with adirectional passive-receive array aswell as a modular dual tow solutioncombining the additional source leveland bandwidth available in tow bodywith echo reception occurring on aseparate directional receive array.Ultra’s fully-modular in-line VDSmarks a step change in technologyand capability, away from theconstraints of traditional towedsonars. It needs only a single, lightweight winch, which can beoperated by two personnel.Additionally, the low weight andfootprint of the in-line VDS allows itto be fitted to smaller warships andthose vessels not specificallydesigned for ASW operations.

In its full specification, Ultra’smodular VDS combines both systemsto offer the option to use the in-linetow for littoral operations andtorpedo defence and stream the towbody when additional detectionranges are required in deep waterASW operations.

PASSIVE TOWED ARRAYSUltra has developed passive towedarray systems for conventional andnuclear submarines and surface shipsfrom small patrol vessels up toaircraft carriers. With array diametersranging from less than 30mm to100mm, Ultra’s towed arraysolutions can be configured toprovide sea state zero omni and fulldirectional capability across acousticapertures ranging from tens of Hertzto 100,000 Hertz. Ultra is able tooffer the complete towed arraysystem from the in-water sensorthrough the receiver and signalprocessing solution for integrationinto the host submarine or surfaceship sonar suite.

NEXT GENERATION SURFACESEARCH RADAR Ultra has exploited modernhardware and software data fusiontechnologies to develop a robustreal-time data aggregation andsynchronisation radar architecture. This has enabled the developmentof an affordable, operationallyeffective next generation surfacesearch radar.

This system is based on the AN/SPS-74system that is deployed on the USNavy’s aircraft carrier fleet and isdesigned to detect submarineperiscope targets with high probabilitywhile maintaining a low probability offalse alarm. Its open architecture isdesigned to enable integration withmultiple types of radar systems toenable a common data acquisitionand processing environment.

INTEGRATED SONAR SYSTEMFor surface ship applications Ultrahas developed a comprehensive, fully Integrated Sonar System (ISS),comprising both hull-mounted andtowed arrays. It is a modular system, built on a common multi-sensorprocessor, within an openarchitecture ‘system of systems’. It fuses data from own-ship and off-board sensors to build a completeunderwater tactical picture anddelivers a bi-static sonar capabilityfrom hull-mounted and towed arraysonars. To maximise detection andlocalisation of underwater threats, the system further facilitates inter-operability with sensors on third-party co-operating platforms, including sonobuoy processing.

Ultra’s ISS is a single sonar withmultiple sensors. It can operate atmultiple frequencies and has bi- andmultistatic functionality to increasethe probability and range ofdetection, classification, andlocalisation of both submarines andtorpedoes. Traditional sonarinstallations typically treat each sonaras a separate, independent system, linked via a network, to a combatsystem. Ultra’s ISS draws together theinformation from each acousticsensor into single sonar system withmultiple sensors.

ISS therefore includes sensorinformation from active sources andpassive arrays, whether on-board oroff-board, and so captures manymore detection opportunities, increasing the probability ofdetection through integration gain.Ultra has taken an innovativeapproach in displaying the outputfrom ISS. The aim is to minimise thetraining burden and workload ofoperators, whilst maximising theirability to utilise the full capability ofthe system to detect contacts.

In ISS, the transmitters and receiverscan be physically separated, butoperate as a single system in ageographically dispersed network. The data from all sensors isintegrated and is used to generate asingle graphical display. ISS can alsointegrate track data from theCombat Management System. Thisenables management of the ASWtracks, automatic target motionanalysis, and track calculation andgeneration. All the integratedinformation is displayed on intuitive, interactive, geographically orientateddisplays. The operators have anumber of tools, including the optionto analyse the energy map and tosimply switch on various geo-spatialoverlays and multiple filters, to aidthem in rapidly identifying andresolving contacts and potentialunderwater threats.

…optimises theprobability ofsubmarine andtorpedo detectionwhilst avoiding theproblem ofacoustic ’clutter’.
