Understanding Community

• The StoryBrant riding is a unique mixture of urban, rural, and native lands found in one of themost accessible parts of Canada. We areblessed by our geography, taking ourplace in the heart-land of southwestern Ontario. We are rich witharchitectural her-itage in buildingslike Yates Castle, the old Paris Town Hall, the Langford Community Centre,Mohawk Chapel, and the Timekeeper’sBuilding. And we appreciate the history of our community at sites like the BellHomestead,

Brant Museum and Archives, and theWoodland Cultural Centre. This is also acommunity that has seen its share of difficult times. We have been hit hard by

plant closures andthe downfall of them a n u f a c t u r i n gsector in Ontario.We continue tofeel the harsh

effects of a decade of decline that has seenthousands of people lose their jobs. Wehave been one of the hardest hit communitiesin Canada in the global recession, and wehave yet to see any progress in the sloweconomic recovery.

“We have been hit hard by plantclosures and the downfall of themanufacturing sector in Ontario.”

Understanding Community

• The ChallengeWe are faced with the need for new lead-ership in this community. Leadershipthat will help provide real solutions to thereal issues facing thepeople of Brant. Leader-ship that listens to thepeople in our community.

There are many needsfacing this riding. There isthe need for more jobs, in quantity andquality. There is a need for greeninitiatives that truly help to make ourcommunity better.

There is a need to useour vast arts andcultural talents aseconomic drivers forthe riding. These areamong the needs thatwe seek to make ourcommunity better. Tomeet these needs, we

have to face thechallenge of changingthe way we look at theriding. We must builda fairer communitythat doesn’t succumb toblind ideology. We needa community that buildsrelationships for the

social, economical, andcultural benefit of everyone who lives

here. We need a community with a newenvironment that focuses on listening andinnovation. We need a community that

doesn’t rely on foodbanks, temp work, andlow wages just to survive.

Our challenge is to find away to meet the needs of this community in leader-

ship, in economic stability, and in socialresponsibility.

“There is the need formore jobs, in quantityand quality.”

• The Choice

The opportunity for Brant is to elect newleadership that speaks for, and with, thecommunity. Someone who is moreconcerned withthe communitythan they are with

the political partythey represent.

Looking to thefuture of thiscommunity, Brant needs someone whocan work with the other levels of governmentto accomplish the goals of the riding. Acommunity leader who will bring fresh

ideas for the creation of new jobs, theresolution of native land claims, and theelimination of poverty in Brant.

A community leader who actually listensto what Brant needs federal support forinstead of dictating the terms of their

support. Above all, theriding needs someoneto work for change in

the community for thegood of the community.Someone who works toimprove the ridingbefore, during, and

after the campaign. Someone who proveshe will do something for the communityby doing it, not just talking about it.

There’s a lot to do. Let’s work together!

“Above all, the riding needs

someone to work for change inthe community for the good ofthe community.”
