Rope SelectionRope Recommendations for Double Drum and BMR Winders

Triangular (Flattened) Strand Constructions: 6x26, 6x27, 6x28, 6x29, 6x30, 6x31, 6x32, 6x33, 6x34• Provides a “flat” strand surface on sheave and drum areas, exposing 4x

more wearing surface than round strand, reducing abrasion and applied unit pressure

• Compact design resists crushing and distortion under heavy loads• Produces 10 percent greater strength over a standard 6-strand rope• Reduces wear on sheaves and drums

Turboplast M• 8-strand construction with compacted outer strands• Fully lubricated• Plastic layer between steel core and outer strands• High breaking force• Good resistance against drum crushing

Duroplast M• 8-strand construction with compacted outer strands• Fully lubricated• Plastic layer between steel core and outer strands• High breaking force• Very resistant to abrasion

Turbofit M• Swaged 8-strand rope made with compacted outer strands• Fully lubricated• Plastic layer between steel core and outer strands• High breaking load and very good resistance to drum crushing

Rope Selection Considerations for Double Drum and BMR Winders

• On Blair or Double drum hoists with two or more layers of winding triangular strand has been used with good success.

• When fatigue and abrasion become an issue Union can make triangular strand constructions by varying the number of wires in each strand from 26 (more abrasion resistant) up to 36 (more fatigue resistant) to help reduce these concerns.

• When the frequency of performing drum end cuts becomes an issue, our Casar Turboplast M construction can help reduce the frequency of performing this task.

• When removing torque at the collar level is a problem Casar Turbofit M hoist ropes can reduce this by 90 percent.

• When stretch and torque of a hoist rope are major concerns Casar Turboplast M with its plasticised solid steel core can substantially reduce these issues.

Rope Selection

Rope Selection Considerations for Koepe Friction Winders• Installed in a ground or tower mounted configuration.

• The number of head and balance rope configuration usually varies from 2 ropes to 6 ropes depending on the duty cycle required.

• For depths exceeding 900 m, it is critical that non-spin or rotation-resistant constructions are used.

• For free looping tail ropes, non-spin ropes with swivels attached to both ends are recommended.

• For multi-rope winders, rope load balancing and equal driving sheave/drum circumferences are critical to ensure good rope life.

• Triangular strand hoisting ropes are used with good success in both tower mounted and ground mounted configurations down to a hoisting depth of 1000 meters.

Rope Selection

Rope Recommendations for Slope Hoisting

Triangular (Flattened) Strand• Provides a “flat” strand surface on sheave and drum

areas, exposing 4x more wearing surface than round strand, reducing abrasion

• Compact design resists crushing and distortion under heavy loads

• Produces 10 percent greater strength over a standard 6-strand rope

• Reduces wear on sheaves and drums

• Available with either fiber core or IWRC

Rope Selection Considerations for Slope Hoists• Wider surface areas to decrease abrasion on sheaves

and drums

• High breaking strength to handle increasing demands

• Resistance to bending fatigue and crushing

Factor of safety required

Current average rope life (months)

Note that a cycle is as per SABS 0294, i.e. bank to bank for one conveyance. For a rock winder this means the number of skips hoisted per shaft compartment to discard of the ropes. It is not the number of skips hoisted for the winder to discard of the ropes. Cycles = ( total skips hoisted for the winder ) / 2.All information contained in this sheet is confidential and for CASAR internal use only.
