Transcript of Undergarments for Everyone

Undergarments for Everyone is the campaign by University of the West of England student Ed Tolkien to raise money in order to buy new underwear for the homeless people of Bristol.

I have collected funds via a series of collection boxes and with Sponsorcraft, a crowd-funding website for students. With the funds I collected I bought brand new pants & socks and donated them to two of Bristol’s charities working with homelessness: St Mungo’s in Stokes Croft, and the Julian Trust Night Shelter in St Pauls.

This campaign follows my project entitled ‘Warm Clothes’, where I collected donations of hats, scarves and gloves etc. for homeless people over the the month of December 2011. After talking to people on the streets, the type of garments they said were most difficult to come by was underwear. So here we are!

I made a short animated advert which served to

explain and promote the campaign.

To form the content of the clip I asked the

question – ‘Which words/sensations/emotions

would you use to describe the feeling of putting

on a new or clean pair of socks/pants/bra?

e.g snug, cosy, or bracing.’ – and posed it to

my contacts on Facebook. The answers form

a list which serves to remind the viewer of the

benefits we enjoy from the simple pleasure

that is new underwear. The text then goes on to

explain how you can help provide this pleasure

to a homeless person, who would otherwise not

be able to afford it, by donating money to me!

There are three slightly different versions of

the advert; one, which was posted on the UWE

campus Facebook groups, and directs students

to the donation boxes at their SU bars, another,

which was posted on public Facebook groups

and directs people to the two Salvation Army

shops in Bristol, and a third, which was posted

on my on-line fundraising page.

For the audio of the clip I used a jaunty 1930s

number by jazz legends, Django Reinhardt &

Coleman Hawkins, entitled ‘Crazy Rhythm’.

Although homelessness is a very serious issue,

I chose such an upbeat soundtrack because I

wanted to give the campaign quite an amiable

presence as I hoped it would encourage people

to respond positively.

Sponsorcraft is a web-platform with which

students can raise money for any projects or

endeavours which are in need of funding. It

means anyone who visits the site can easily

donate any amount of money they desire to the

course of their choice, wherever they are.

With Sponsorcraft, sponsors also receive

rewards for their support. There are three

donation levels; £1, £5, and £10, each with

corresponding rewards set by me:

£1 - three different downloadable desktop

wallpapers (in varying sizes depending on the

resolution of your desktop)

£5 - A UfE postcard printed on 350gsm card with

a signed thank-you on the back + three desktop

wallpapers

£10 - A personalised A4 size UfE poster + all of

the above

I chose to shop at Matalan because, when

looking into the manufacturing conditions, and

environmental and ethical policies of a number

of retailers, I found that Matalan was by far the

best company (for a reasonable price).

According to ethicalconsumer.org, Primark,

followed by supermarkets; Sainsbury’s, Tesco,

and ASDA rank as the lowest (most unethical)

clothing retailers, whereas Matalan scores a

whole 12 places higher than any of them.

I am also hoping that Matalans products will be

of higher quality than of those of Primark or the

supermarkets, and that they will last a bit longer,

as most people are well aware of the tendency of

Primark garments to disintergrate after about a

month of wear!

I also asked Matalan and the other retailers

whether they could offer me any discounts or

cost-price garments but unfortunately (and

understandably) they all told me the same

thing; that their charity budgets were already

allocated to other causes.

Both charities were really gratefull to receive the

donations. The volunteers at St Mungo’s even

put the new garments right under the front desk

because they said that they would likely need to

be handed out straight away!

This is not the end!

Although the Sponsorcraft project has expired and I have submitted for my final assessment at University, I will continue to raise money with Undergarments for Everyone for as long as possible. The donation boxes will remain in their existing locations and I will hopefully be able to set some more up in other shops, cafés, and bars around Bristol. Watch this space!
