Northern Scriptwriters Conference

On 17 and 18 March Drama at Huddersfield is co-hosting the Northern Scriptwriters conference with the University of Bolton. This is a great opportunity for undergraduates, postgraduates and new writers to learn from established writers and producers of new writing. These include Sally Wainwright (writer - Unforgiven), Caroline Hollick (Red Production Company), Sally Hibbin (film producer), Jo Combes (BBC writersroom), Roy Boulter (writer - The Street, The Bill, Hollyoaks), Mark Catley (Series Consultant Casualty), Sarah Woods (playwright – National Theatre), Sue Roberts (BBC Executive Producer, Drama) as well as other professionals from the scriptwriting world.

Students form a new orchestra

Former students from the department of Music have joined forces with musician friends from universities across Yorkshire and Lancashire to form a new orchestra. The Northern Philharmonic Orchestra gave their first concert in St Paul’s Hall at the University of Huddersfield in January to a packed house. Their programme of music by Beethoven, Brahms, Sibelius, Khachaturian, Fauré and Bizet was conducted by recent music and drama graduate Yoki Kondo. For more information just search The Northern Philharmonic Orchestra on Facebook.

England Rugby League stars at the University of Huddersfield

The University of Huddersfield welcomed Super League and England Rugby League stars as they took part in a series of media training sessions in the University’s TV Studio. Led by Robin Bailey, the Director of Capricorn Media, BBC sports commentator Dave Woods also lent a hand as players took part in training sessions which taught them how to communicate effectively with the public via the media. Student Matthew Nash who studies Television Production and Media (now Broadcast Journalism) helped out with the training session. Matt said “I’ve enjoyed feeling like a ‘professional’, despite being a student and still learning the ropes”.

The University of Huddersfield could soon rewrite English history!

Battlefield archaeologist Dr Glenn Foard from the University of Huddersfield has already established the true location of the Battle of Bosworth where Richard III perished in 1485. His recent public lecture at the University covered the archaeology and origins of firepower on the battlefields of the Wars of the Roses. In a collaboration between specialists from History and Applied Sciences, Glenn is leading a study of the use of gunpowder weapons, applying modern scientific techniques to study battlefield finds. And after Bosworth, the team will turn their sights on that most iconic of historical events – the Battle of Hastings.

Huddersfield Literature Festival 2011

The Huddersfield Literature Festival returns for its sixth year, celebrating The Word in Action in some of Huddersfield’s most interesting venues! Running from 16-20 of March 2011, it really is offering something to inspire everyone. Supported by our patrons, Lemn Sissay and Sir Patrick Stewart, we play host to some of the best literary talent around. Students at the University of Huddersfield can get involved with the festival in many different ways, from writing to event management positions. Students can also enter the ‘5 Day Film Challenge’ or ‘Write Now!’ to show off their own work. Visit litfest.org.uk for more information.

Huddersfield student makes it big!

Charlie Barnes, who graduated in July, is currently working on a UK tour, which will culminate in a headline show at Manchester Academy 3 as part of the Pangaea Festival. He is also booked to play at next year’s 2000 Trees Festival in Cheltenham alongside Oceansize, 65DaysofStatic, Gallows and Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip.

Charlie is no stranger to the professional music scene. In his final year at University, he spent time working with the Manchester-based progressive rock band Amplifier working on their album ‘The Octopus’. To listen to Charlie’s music visit: charliebarnesmusic.co.uk

Filming a professional project

Students across a number of courses at University Campus Barnsley recently had the opportunity to put their skills to the test with a film project which highlighted the talents of some of Barnsley’s young athletes. Olympic hopefuls were featured in a video entitled Inspiring Athletes which was premiered at the annual dinner of the ‘Barnsley Future’ organisation. Michael Gaughan (3rd year Music Production and Sound Recording) was the project’s sound recordist, and original music was composed by Stephen Anders, Will Price and Martyn Wood (also 3rd year MPSR students). Search ‘Inspiring Athletes’ on Youtube to view the full film.
