The 40-Under-40Awards gatheringmarks its eleventhbirthday this week. A year ago, whenthe ten year mile-stone was reached,we said that such amarker was worth,

literally, two high fives. So this year add in a fist bump.

The eleven year mark meansthat the 2018 class of award win-ners brings the total alumnuscount to an impressive 440. That’squite a run. And it’s for sure gonefast.Said total makes for a lot of living,work, accomplishment, ambition,hope, and dreams.

The awards celebrate all ofthese and more.

And they are, we hope, asmuch a spur for the future as theyare a recognition of each winner’spresent and past.

Our award winners havealready blazed trails through theirlives that bring credit to them-selves, their families, their com-munities, Ireland, Irish America,and the United States of America.

The awards are not given onthe basis of specific jobs, voca-

tions or achievements, but rathercover all possible career bases andpursuits and are prompted bynominators who see in eachaward winner a reason, or rea-sons, as to why he or she standsout at a time of life when a certainlandmark age has yet to bereached.

This year’s award winners aredrawn from a broad assortment of

career paths. Fifteen of the 2018 award recip-

ients are women. Winners were born in different

parts of the United States andIreland.

This year’s U.S.-born winnershail from New York, New Jersey,Connecticut, Massachusetts andNorth Carolina.

The varied careers, and the dif-

ferent places our award winnerscall home, has become a familiaraspect of 40-Under-40 over thelast decade and a year.

The 40 Under 40 Awards arenational and international, per-sonal and shared. And we believethey wear the passing years well.

The winners bring pride to thestory of the Irish in America, andindeed around the world.

And the Irish Echo is proud toplay host in what is our 90th yearof publication.So forty plus forty plus ten.

That’s definitely worth an extrafist bump!

The Echo’s big year markers isa reminder that forty, standoutage that it might be, is only a stepalong the way.

Our winners inspire, even asthey provide the energy andimpetus to hold an awards event.

The Irish Echo congratulateseach and every one, and will do sowith the greatest pleasure thisFriday evening, February 23, atRosie O’Grady’s in Manhattan,venue for the awards presentationgathering.

Best advice you could give someone starting out: Workhard. It won’t do you any harm. You may need to work in aposition without the promotion on paper, but if you proveyourself the opportunities will come. Always approach yourrole with a learning mindset and absorb all the informationfrom your peers. I recently completed a soft skills workshopon Stakeholder Management and wish I had thought more inmy early career on the importance of identifying andmanaging your stakeholders. Three things people would be surprised to know about me:1. I was the Under 16 double scull champion of Ireland in 1999. 2. I once worked as a porter in the Coombe maternityhospital, scarring for a young man! 3. My first and only game of Gaelic Football was with theHouston Gaels against New Orleans, where I played in goals.We lost.How do you celebrate your irishness? I am an officer theIrish Network Houston where we host regular eventsincluding a mixer on the Third Thursday of the month in bars

across Houston. I constantly try to promote Offaly “Ireland’shidden gem” to the local Irish-American population.

Bernie hails from Mucklagh, a small village outsideTullamore in Co. Offaly, where he regularly returns hometo visit his parents and siblings. He was recently

featured in the local paper, the Tullamore Tribune, in relationto helping the clean-up effort after Hurricane Harvey whichdevastated Houston in 2017.Bernie studied business and law at University College Dublinwhere he earned an undergraduate degree in Business andLaw and an LLM in Commercial Law. Bernie then completedhis training contract as a Solicitor with Gibbons Associates inSandymount, specializing in family law and litigation, beforemigrating to Australia at the end of 2010. He started workingwith Macquarie in Sydney before transferring to the Londonoffice in 2011 and then the Houston office where he has beensince 2013.

Bernie is heavily involved in the Irish community inHouston. He is a founding member of Irish Network Houstonand has served as Treasurer, Social Media Officer and VicePresident since the Houston branch was established in 2013.

Bernie is a keen runner and set up the Pimlico runningclub in Houston in 2014, and setup the Ravenscourt ParkRunners in London in 2012. He partakes in the TexasIndependence relay every year, which is an overnight 200-mile race and in 2017 also climbed Kilimanjaro, Africa’shighest mountain.

Those connectionswill pop up later in life and you'll be glad you took the time tobe personable, and even if it's not for professional purposes,you'll at least wind up with a lot of friends. Three things people would be surprised to know about me:1. I play the bagpipes. 2. I moonlight as an event DJ. 3. I serve on the board of directors for the Irish AmericanBuilding Society.

Brian was born to Daniel and Lynn Leary on June 8th,1993. At the early age of 8 Brian begun playing thebagpipes, which later landed him as a player in a

Brooklyn-based competition band (yes, those exist) that tookfirst place at the highly competitive Hunter Mountain BagpipeCompetition. Down on 16th Street, in Xavier High School,Brian continued his music passion as a percussionist in theschool's big band and graduated in 2011. In college, hestudied communications at Saint Francis College indowntown Brooklyn, and after graduating in 2016 accepted aposition in the field at a Fortune 500 company and the largestengineering and construction firm in the world, AECOM. Brianhas been doing public and media relations at AECOM for 1.5years and is currently serving on the board of directors for theIrish American Building Society, assisting in public relationsefforts.

Brian James Noonan was born and raised in WhitePlains, New York. He was the second child and first sonborn to Colleen Frawley and James Noonan. Following

in the footsteps of his father and five uncles, Brian attendedArchbishop Stepinac High School. He went on to graduatefrom Fairfield University, earning a Bachelor of Sciencedegree in Marketing with a Minor in Operations Management.He subsequently began a career with W.B. Mason & Co.where he enjoyed working closely with clients in the field ofcorporate sales.

After obtaining his insurance broker license he moved onto the BNC Insurance Agency in Rye Brook, NY. As aninsurance broker and risk manager, Brian specializes inconstruction insurance and has helped many in the Irishcommunity protect both their business and personal assets.He thoroughly enjoys helping clients successfully navigatethe current risks associated with their operations, andrelishes in new challenges and opportunities that allow himto broaden his expertise in the insurance industry. Brian isan active member of The Society of the Friendly Sons of St.Patrick in the County of Westchester, The Irish BusinessOrganization of New York Inc., The Irish American BuildingSociety, The Emerald Guild Society, and the IrishInternational Business Network – New York.

Outside of the office, he enjoys relaxing with his wife offour years, Stephanie, and their nearly two-year-old identicaltwin boys Patrick and George. He also enjoys exploringIreland and visiting family in Kilmaine, County Mayo andNewmarket on Fergus, County Clare, and looks forward tobringing his boys there in the years to come.
