Under the Jacaranda Trees

With only two mission teams left for the year, the hospital has benefitted from the previous 8

teams. So far walls have been built for the new general store, 2 new sidewalks have been

completed with another under construction. The new Administration wing has the walls ready

for the final paint, the ceiling frames for the ceiling boards is nearing completion and the tiles

for the floor will soon be purchased. The new offices for the I.T. Department were remodeled

from the old surgical unit and now occupied. Offices for the Rescue Center have been painted

and in use now. Many new supplies have been added to the Medical clinic and already have saved

many critical patients. Eight new homes for grateful families have been built and added to the

communities. Teams bonded with many school children as they encouraged to love books, play

and learn.

Team members have given seminars to the Nursing staff, assisted in the Physical Therapy, I.T.

and Med Tech departments. Teams have brought to Maua new ideas for internet service,

better ways to serve in the Medical Camps, worked on water wells and community development.

Engineers have worked diligently with the water wells on the compound, facilitating repairs and

a better water supply to the hospital.

The hospital staff and the people touched by the teams will forever be grateful for not only

the time, supplies but the love of Christ seen in each team member. These gifts cannot be

quantified because they come with such love and kindness that only God understands the true

donations of these wonderful servants.

Thank you from the Staff of MMH and the people served!

The Methodist Church in Kenya (MCK) was founded in 1862 by a group of missionaries sent by the United

Methodist Free Churches of Britain. Their first Mission Station at Ribe, north of Mombasa began the spread and

expansion to other parts of the country. On January 7,1967, the MCK became autonomous from the British

Methodist Church. From those humble beginnings at the coast, MCK is now spread across the country with new

mission sites in Tanzania and Uganda.

History of Maua Methodist Hospital, continued:

The Kenyan Methodist Church became autonomous in 1964 and at

that time the name of the hospital was changed from Berresford

Memorial Hospital to Maua Methodist Hospital.

In 1966 additions to the hospital expanded the bed capacity of

the wards.

In 1973, Sr. Meg Bailey came to Maua after having been the only

trained nurse at Ngao from 1968 to 1973. Meg was the matron at

the hospital until 1975 when she went to the UK to do Health

Visitor training. She returned in 1976 and started the curriculum

development for Enrolled Community Health Nurse Training at

Maua with Louise Hall. The Community Health Department was

formed in 1977, with Sr. Meg Bailey as the Coordinator of

Community Health. She was also the Principal Tutor.

Meg was assisted in setting up the Community Health Department

by Mattie Tolley who joined the school of Nursing to work in the

community with P.H.C. and to teach in the school of nursing.

Mattie left in 1986. There were 80 nursing students, 3,000

deliveries in a year and in 1988 community based distribution

agents for oral contraceptives were trained. Meg left Maua in

1990 to start the Methodist Church Health Project where she worked until 1999 when she left Kenya.

To be continued……...

Mission teams working hard -

The most recent teams have brought people who have assisted the hospital in numerous ways.

One nurse was able to scrub in on a couple of surgeries, several worked with Palliative Care to

prepare an educational program for youth, water wells were investigated plus work on the

hospital projects and building the homes in the villages. Each team, by bringing money for

projects, created numerous jobs for villagers by hiring them to work on the hospital projects

and in the villages. Projects continue well past the team’s departure and many families gain

financial stability because of the work.

Team leaders serving from July 9- July 30:

Scott Brown – Memorial Drive UMC, Houston, TX.

Louise Kienzel – Oregon/Idaho team

Letter from Janis Cosgrove, Illinois Team Leader:

Working in the hospital on projects (the cement pathway), or doing professional duties as

medical personnel (myself and Kim in Labor and Delivery helping to deliver a baby or Shirley

Meades Keane giving seminars all week) was a joy. Being able to build another AIDS Orphan

home and seeing its completion and the smiles of the family, conducting a medical camp for over

630 patients and deworming 2000 school children meant so much. Leading services at the

hospital was a wonderful experience as Pastor Lisa gave a beautiful service, our Scripture and

the team singing a song (4 verses) in Kiswahili! Our next week in Meru we were able to work at

Kaaga Primary School and build a large community and school garden for the children and plant

highly nutritious vegetables.

May your year be full of God's presence and love as you work with the wonderful staff at MMH.

Helping the least of these…

While in a meeting last week, a child was admitted to the burn unit. His left arm was severely

burned from scalding water. The family was desperate for help and knew the child could not

survive unless at a hospital setting where he would have less exposure to infections. But when it

was explained about the process toward recovery they knew they couldn’t afford the extended

stay, grafts and medications.

Sister Mary Gitari came into our meeting and told us the story saying that the family had no

choice but to take the child home. Then she asked the question, “Can we pay for this

treatment?” The answer by everyone in the room was YES! So she left quickly to tell the

parents that their son would be treated and paid for through the Service Fund. What a great

feeling it is to know money is available for a mother whose child desperately needs care. What

a joy it is to be able to say that because of people like you who give to the Advance Specials we

can offer lifesaving medical treatment.
