Despite having worked in schools for thirty-three years, I am always startled by the arrival of June. Yes, the conclusion of the school year is inevitable, but it amazes me how quickly it comes about. There may have been moments, days, or even multi-week stretches that seemed to drag along, but overall the year has passed with the speed of Jack Z. designing a website! I hope that you have enjoyed many successes, and many different kinds of success throughout this school year. Have you mastered some new skills? Have you met some new people? Have you stretched yourself in some significant way? I hope that you have faced some challenges. Taking risks and meeting adversity head on are essential to growth. We need to be thankful for our trials and all that they teach us. The difficulties that we experience awaken and activate our abilities and our resilience.
On a far more specific (and perhaps urgent) note, I hope that you are positioning yourself for a successful end to the school year. That means completing course requirements and preparing for final assessments. Students should make sure they understand how the end-of-term schedule (outlined elsewhere in this newsletter) works. These final assessments provide students with the challenge and the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and understandings. I encourage you to approach the end of the year in a manner that will leave you satisfied with having offered your best effort.
The end of June will bring some changes to Walter Murray. Graduates face a variety of options including employment, travel, and post-secondary studies. Staff members may also be leaving these hallways behind. Norm Bull is retiring from his teaching role in the SPS Transition Program. Some transfers are still to be worked
out, but the list of departing staff includes Leo Grosjean, Scott Moore, Nicole Stevens, Doug Possberg, Kip Luce, Nicole Shewchuk, Bonita Janzen, Brad Schoenfeld, Sharon Harvey, and Sandra Paulsen. Our Administrative team is also being disbanded, with Mrs. Peterson off to Marion Graham Collegiate and Mr. Ferguson shifting his responsibilities to Bedford Road. We are grateful for the fine service provided by everyone listed, and wish them all the best in their new locations. I will also be retiring and moving on. Over the past five years, I have been truly blessed to work with this staff, these students, and this community. I can’t imagine a more supportive and rewarding context in which to complete my career. Thank you all.

Clubs
CANOE CLUB Walter Murray’s Canoe Club is in full swing this spring with completion of our swim test in April at Harry Bailey Pool and our weekly luncheon meetings on Tuesdays. With the ice off the lake in Stonebridge at the
beginning of May, we were able to practice our skills and technique. With over 60 dedicated students in the club, we also had three practices at River Landing and two more exciting paddling practice trips down the Saskatchewan River from Beaver Creek (about 20 kms). This will prepare us for our awesome three day trip from Saskatoon to Batoche from June 2 to June 4. We’re looking forward to spending time together and continued sunshine for our trip!
DEBATE CLUB Congratulations Leora D., Anwyn D., and Afsohneh A. who represented Canada at the Pan American Debate Tournament between Canada, the United States, and Mexico. They were awesome placing fifth overall – the best representation by a Saskatchewan Team EVER, and special congrats to Leora who placed FOURTH in the speaker category OVERALL. Congratulations to Leora and Anwyn D. on their second place team finish at the Canadian National Debate Tournament held at Walter Murray Collegiate this past April. Further congratulations to Leora for her excellent finish in the Speaker Category. Debate Club begins again with a summer camp at the end of August. Please contact Ms. Kalesnikoff for more details.
CURLING NEWS This year we had 18 eager and dedicated curlers who made up four teams - one boy’s, two girls’ and one mixed. City league play started in November and the mixed team of Dom N., Sydney C., Alan W., and Katie K. captured the city championship in February. The team then went on to win the Regional title in Spiritwood and ended their season with a bronze medal at provincials on March 3. What an exciting finish to the season!

GSA HOSTS FIRST-EVER ALLY AWARENESS WORKSHOP On May 18, Walter Murray’s Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) hosted the first-ever Ally Awareness Workshop. The event was entirely student-conceived, organized, and run with GSA members leading sessions designed to educate students on LBGT issues. Different sessions were offered, including “coming out”, a discussion of the sensitive nature of declaring one’s identity; “trans 101” focusing on issues facing transgendered people; and “Alienation,” where students learned what it feels like to be marginalized. Participants cycled through the various sessions in small groups, hearing the messages directly from their peers. Amanda Guthrie from OUTSaskatoon lent her expertise as a session leader, joining GSA members Rowan H., Taylor-Ace D., Daemon S., Morgan S., Grace G., Ada T., and Gavi A.. Both the student leaders and participants shared in a morning of peer-to-peer learning and discussion, with everyone going away with a greater understanding of the issues facing LGBT people today.
ONE ACTS
Congratulations to this year’s One Acts crew who won big at the Regional Drama Festival in Warman on April 14 to 16. WMCI took two plays to this year’s festival: Antigone by Bonnie Roberts (adapted from Sophocles) and Departures and Arrivals by Carol Shields. Students from both shows earned a variety of acting and
technical awards, including Blaze R, Everett W., Liam E., Breanne M., Nathan P., Nicholas B., Tremaine C., Orwa D., Nic G., and Asir R.. Additionally, Departures and Arrivals, under the direction of Leora D., took home several major awards – including Best Visual Production and Best Overall Production. This win earned the cast a spot in the Provincial Drama Festival at the University of Regina on May 7, where Catherine L. won a certificate of merit for
excellence in stage management. Congrats to everyone involved with the 2016 One Act plays at WMCI!

MARAUDER SPORTS
FOOTBALL
As the school year winds down, football is already in full swing. We had our spring camp early this year around mid April, averaging about 40 players a practice. We had great weather and learned a lot. We finished the camp on a high note having a steak supper fundraiser to help rebuild the team room. We raised over $2000.00, which puts us half way there. Thanks again to all who came out and supported the team. After our spring camp we had 28 of our players sign up for one of the best run football camps in the province, the Kelly Bates Football Camp. Walter Murray was well represented and we took home five of the eight awards given out. Congrats to Jericho S., Teagan Z., Ange M., Adam L., and Ethan S. We are very excited for the upcoming season. Our team has progressed so much this year as we took home the Tier 2 Championship. We have a lot of returning players this year and our goal is to take home the Tier 1 Championship. There are a lot of camps being offered this summer and you can find more information on their websites (Football Saskatchewan, Hilltops, Huskies). So, let’s have a productive summer and we will see all junior and senior football players on the field for our first fall practice on Monday, August 29th at 3:30 p.m. (the fall practice and game schedule will be posted on the senior side of the team room and on the football Facebook page). If you have any questions about football please contact me at [email protected]. Thanks, Coach Bates

The school and coaches are proud of our athletes that have assembled this year and committed to making themselves better athletes.

DRESS CODE REMINDER
How we dress and behave sends messages about us to others. At Walter Murray, we want people to have enough freedom to express their own personality and at the same time recognize that we want to send positive messages to others in our school and surrounding community. As we transition to warmer weather, students need to select their clothes in good taste and judgment in mind. Students should dress modestly in attire. Shirts that reveal or expose mid drift and/or short shorts, are not acceptable school attire. Students in violation of our school dress code will be politely spoken to and may be asked to change their clothing. Speak to an administrator if you have any questions.
CANADIAN COMPUTING COMPETITION (CCC)
