FOREWORD INTRODUCTION

The UNCTAD Handbook of Statistics provides a collection of statistics and indicators relevant to the analysis of international trade, investment and development. Reliable statistical information is indispensable for formulating sound economic policies and recommendations that may commit countries for many years as they strive to integrate into the world economy and improve the living standards of their citizens. Whether it is for research, consultation or technical cooperation, UNCTAD needs reliable and internationally comparable trade, financial and macroeconomic data, covering several decades and as many countries as possible.

Le Manuel de statistiques de la CNUCED fournit des statistiques et indicateurs essentiels lanalyse du commerce international, de linvestissement et du dveloppement. Une information statistique fiable est indispensable la formulation de politiques conomiques saines et de recommandations qui engageront les pays pour de longues annes dans leur processus dintgration dans lconomie mondiale et damlioration des conditions de leurs peuples. Que ce soit pour la recherche, la concertation ou la coopration technique, la CNUCED a besoin de donnes commerciales, financires et macroconomiques fiables, comparables au niveau international et disponibles, si possible, sur plusieurs dcennies et pour un maximum de pays.

In addition to facilitating the work of the secretariats economists, the Handbook provides all other users - policymakers, research specialists, academics, officials from national governments or international organizations, journalists, executive managers, members of non-governmental organizations - with the access to cross-comparable sets of data. The Handbook presents a consolidated, yet wide-ranging overview of the statistical series available at UNCTAD.

En plus de faciliter les travaux des conomistes du secrtariat, le Manuel fournit tous les autres utilisateurs, dcideurs, chercheurs, universitaires, fonctionnaires dadministrations nationales ou dorganisations internationales, journalistes, cadres dentreprises ou membres dorganisations non gouvernementales, un accs des donnes transversales comparables. Le Manuel prsente un aperu harmonis des sries statistiques disponibles la CNUCED.

The publication is available in printed copy and DVD format. Moreover, the statistical series published in the Handbook are also available online at UNCTADstat(http://unctadstat.unctad.org/wds). Unlike the Handbook, which captures statistics at one point of time, UNCTADstat is continuously updated and enhanced, thus providing users with the latest available data. Consequently, the figures from the Handbook may not always correspond to UNCTADstat.

De plus,les donnes prsentes sont disponibles en ligne, dans UNCTADstat (http://unctadstat.unctad.org/wds). la diffrence du Manuel qui prsente des statistiques figes un moment donn, UNCTADstat est amliore et actualise rgulirement pour mettre la disposition des utilisateurs les donnes les plus rcentes. Par consquent, les donnes du Manuel ne pourront tre compares systmatiquement UNCTADstat.

The paper copy of the UNCTAD Handbook of Statistics 2014 has been streamlined and is shorter than the 2013 version. The number of country groupings presented has been reduced. However, all the groupings included in the previous editions are still available on the DVD and in UNCTADstat.

Le Manuel de Statistiques de la CNUCED 2014 a t simplifi et rduit par rapport la version prcdente. Le nombre de groupements de pays prsents a t rduit. Cependant, tous les groupements qui taient inclus dans les versions prcdentes sont toujours disponibles dans le DVD et dans UNCTADstat.
