COAL REGION, COAHUILA – The federal, state and local governments in the area agreed that most people who lost everything in the Hurricane Alex will be relocated to towns and subdivisions built in safer zones.

During a visit by President Felipe Calderon to the affected area, he said he supported this option and made a promise to finance the con-struction of two new subdivisions, a total of 1,050 homes that will be built for people who lost their homes in the municipalities of Sabinas and Nueva Rosita, the hardest hit by the hurricane.

Calderon said relocating the residents to safer ground was the right thing to do, as some people were living in homes built on river beds. He said that sooner or later there is a risk for flooding in those areas.

Coahuila Governor Humberto Moreira said that preschools, el-ementary and middle schools will be built in those subdivisions to cover the educational needs of the population.

Moreira also expressed his concern about the way the dams are being administered.

“(We ask) for verification of the current state of the dams and bridges on highways, and to keep reducing the water levels at the dams. We are worried about the closing of the gates at the dams, we need to be ready for other incidents,” Moreira said, making reference to the 17 tropical storms that have been forecast for this year.

The governor asked Calderon to keep the dam gates open. To this Calderon said: “Conagua (the agency that regulates water) is working to get rid of the water and keep a proper management of the dams; we agree that we are trying to avoid a new disaster and its consequences. In this case it’s very important the adequate administration of the dams.”

Reubican pueblos en Coahuila por huracán

REGION CARBONIFERA, COAHUILA – Los gobiernos federal, estatal y municipal coincidieron en que la mayoría de los damnificados por el huracán Alex serán reubicados en colonias y poblaciones creadas en zonas más seguras.

Durante una visita del presidente Felipe Calderón a la zona afectada por el hura-cán, el mandatario se mostró a favor de esta opción y se comprometió a financiar el levantamiento de dos colonias nuevas, con un total de mil 50 viviendas, que se construirán para los afectados que residen en los municipios de Sabinas y Nueva Rosita, los cuales fueron los más afectados.

Calderón consideró como correcta la opción del a reubicación de residentes que tienen sus viviendas en el lecho de algunos ríos. Dijo que tarde o temprano existe el riesgo de inundación.

Por su parte el gobernador Humberto Moreira dijo que en cada una de las nuevas colonias se construirán jardines de niños, escuelas primarias y secundarias, para cubrir las necesidades de educación.

El gobernador también expresó su preocupación sobre el manejo del agua de las presas.

“(Pedimos) verificar la situación de las presas y puentes en carreteras, continuar disminuyendo el nivel de las presas. A nosotros sí nos preocupa que las presas va-yan a cerrar sus compuertas, necesitamos logar estar preparados para otras contin-gencias,” expresó Moreira, refiriéndose a las 17 tormentas tropicales pronosticadas para este año.

El gobernador pidió al presidente que no se cierren las compuertas de las presas, a lo que el mandatario contestó: “Conagua está trabajando para desalojar el agua y llevar un manejo adecuado de las presas; se trata, coincidimos en eso, de evitar al máximo la posible llegada de otro nuevo desastre, evitar sus consecuencias. Y en ese caso es fundamental el manejo adecuado de las presas”.

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – Agencias de la ley y medios de comunicación recibieron por correo información confidencial de más de mil 300 personas, a las que se les acusa de estar en el país de forma ilegal. Casi la totalidad de los nombres en la lista tienen apellido hispano.

La lista, que fue recibida el 12 de julio, inclu-ye las fechas de nacimiento, números de teléfo-no y direcciones de los supuestos inmigrantes indocumentados. También incluye los números de seguro social y nombres de patrones de al-gunas personas.

El sobre incluía una carta, firmada por un grupo que se hace llamar “Ciudadanos Preocu-pados de Estados Unidos” y fechada el 4 de abril de 2010.

En la carta, el grupo dice creer firmemente que las personas cuyos nombres aparecen en la

lista deben ser deportadas. De acuerdo con la carta, la información fue recopilada observando a las personas. “Después invertimos el tiempo y el esfuerzo necesario para obtener información junto con ciudadanos mexicanos legales que in-filtraron sus redes sociales y nos ayudaron a ob-tener la información necesaria que necesitamos para agregarlos a nuestra lista”, dice la misiva.

Un anexo a la carta dice que el grupo no ha visto ninguna acción por parte del Sistema de Inmigración y Aduanas, por lo que estaba distribuyendo la lista y pidiendo a los medios de comunicación que “mostraran los nombres y números al público e hicieran la pregunta: cuánto le están costando a los contribuyentes”.

Diversos medios de comunicación contacta-ron a algunas personas en la lista, para verificar la autenticidad de la información.

Un reporte del diario Salt Lake Tribune en-contró que algunos números habían sido desco-

nectados o contestaba otra persona.Una mujer del área de West Valley City, quien

emigró de Perú, dijo que la información de ella y su familia es correcta, pero que se hizo resi-dente permanente a principios de esta semana.

Autoridades en el estado de Utah están in-vestigando el origen de la lista. Una de las op-ciones consideradas es que un trabajador del estado pudo haber tenido acceso a una base de datos de forma ilegal, la cual contenía infor-mación confidencial, para ayudar a recopilar la lista que ha sembrado el terror en al comunidad latina.

Mientras tanto, Virginia Kice, vocera de ICE, dijo que ellos habían recibido la carta y la lista, pero no sabía si la información era confiable. Además, declinó decir si la agencia va a actuar en base a la información recibida, diciendo so-lamente que la agencia tiene una política de buscar primero a los inmigrantes criminales.

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – Law enforce-ment agencies and media outlets received by mail an envelope with personal information on over 1,300 people, who are allegedly in the country illegally. Almost all the names in the list have a Latino or Hispanic surname.

The list, which was received July 12, includes dates of birth, telephone numbers and addresses of people who are supposedly undocumented im-migrants. The list also includes the social security numbers and employer’s names of some people.

The envelope also contained a letter, signed by a group that calls itself “Concerned Citizens of the United States” and was dated April 4.

In the letter, the group said they firmly believe the people listed must be deported. According to

the letter, the list was compiled by observing peo-ple. “We then spend the time and effort needed to gather information along with legal Mexican nationals who infiltrate their social networks and help us obtain the necessary information we need to add them to our list,” the letter said.

An addendum to the letter said that the group hasn’t seen any action by Immigration and Cus-toms Enforcement and that’s why they were dis-tributing the letter and sending it to media outlets asking them to “show the public the names and numbers and ask the question – how much are they costing the taxpayers.”

Several media outlets contacted people from the list in order to verify the information.

The Salt Lake Tribune reported that some of the numbers had been disconnected, while in oth-ers different people were answering the phone.

However, a Peruvian woman from West Valley City said that while the information about herself and her family was correct, she had become a le-gal permanent resident earlier that week.

State authorities are launching an investigation on the origins of the list. They are looking into whether a state worker may have had illegal ac-cess to a database containing sensitive informa-tion, and then used this information to compile the list, which has caused panic in the Hispanic community.

Meanwhile, Virginia Kice, a spokeswoman for ICE, said that while they had received the letter and the list, they didn’t know if the information was accurate. She declined to say if the agency planned to act on the information provided on the list, however, she mentioned that ICE has a policy of going after dangerous immigrants first.

Police ask for help from the public to solve armed robbery

AURORA – Aurora Police are seeking information from the public to help them solve a June 25 armed robbery in which two men were injured.

The incident happened at about 8:50 p.m. in the parking lot of a gas station located in the 1100 block of East New York Street.

The victims were two friends, a 58 year old man from Elkville, Illinois and a 44 year old man from Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

Both told police that while they were at the gas station parking lot, a man came from be-hind and struck the 58 year old in the mouth with a handgun, knocking him to the ground. The suspect demanded money from the victim, who refused, got up and ran into the gas station. The 44 year old tried to intervene when he was struck in the head and knocked to the ground. The robber demanded money from the second victim, who handed over a large amount of cash. The suspect then fled on foot, eastbound.

The suspect, a black male, was described by both victims as being about 24 years old and having a thin build. There suspect can be 5’7” o r 6’4”. Both said he had black, shoulder-length hair worn in corn rows, brown eyes and a small goatee.

Detectives said there were numerous people in the area who could have witnessed the incident. Both victims were treated at the scene.

Anyone with information is asked to call Aurora Police Investigators at 630-256-5500 or Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at 630-892-1000. Callers to Crime Stoppers are anonymous and qualify for a cash reward of up to $5000.00 for information that leads to an arrest in the case.

Policía solicita ayuda para esclarecer robo a mano armada

AURORA – El Departamento de Policía de Aurora busca la ayuda de la comunidad para resolver un robo a mano armada sucedido el 25 de junio, en el que dos hombres resultaron heridos.

El suceso ocurrió alrededor de las 8:50 p.m. del 25 de junio en el estacionamiento de una gasolinera ubicada en la cuadra 1100 de la calle East New York Street.

Las víctimas son dos amigos, un hombre de 58 años de edad de Elkville, Illinois y un hombre de 44 años de edad de Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

Ambos dijeron a la policía que mientras se encontraban en el estacionamiento de la gasoli-nera, se acercó un hombre por detrás y golpeó al hombre de 58 años en la boca con un arma, tirándolo al piso. El sospechoso le exigió dinero a la víctima, quien se negó a dárselo, se levantó y corrió hacia las instalaciones de la gasolinera. El hombre de 44 años intentó intervenir, pero fue golpeado en la cabeza y cayó al suelo. El atacante le exigió dinero y la segunda víctima le dio una considerable cantidad de dinero. El sospechoso se alejó en dirección este a pie.

Él fue descrito como un hombre de raza negra de alrededor de 24 años y complexión delgada. Las víctimas lo describieron como de 5 pies 7 pulgadas de alto o 6 pies 4 pulgadas de altura. El sospechoso tiene el pelo negro, peinado en trenzas que le llegan a los hombros, ojos cafés y una pequeña barba.

AURORA – Dos residentes de Aurora enfrentan cargos de intento de asesinato, al estar acu-sados de apuñalar a un hombre afuera de una licorería el 9 de julio.

Bridget Ann Ivanov, de 38 años de edad, y Sean Roderick Par-ker Sr., de 42, también enfrentan cargos de agresión agravada en el incidente, registrado alrededor de las 11 p.m. en la cuadra 300 de East Galena Blvd.

En el incidente ambos acusados aparentemente apuñalaron a un hombre cuatro veces en la espalda y el abdomen. La víctima recibió tratamiento de sus heridas en un hospital local.

Las autoridades dijeron que aparentemente la víctima y los ata-cantes no se conocían. Los agresores se encuentran en la prisión del Condado de Kane.

AURORA – Two Aurora residents are facing attempted murder charges after being ac-cused of stabbing a man outside a liquor store.

Bridget Ann Ivanov, 38, and Sean Roderick Parker Sr., 42, also face aggravated battery charges in the July 9 incident, which happened at about 11 p.m. in the 300 block of East Galena Blvd.

In the incident both suspects allegedly stabbed a man four times in the back and abdomen. The victim was treated at a local hospital.

Authorities said the victim and the attackers apparently didn’t know each other. The accused are in the Kane County Jail.

Attempted murder is a Class X felony with a sentence of between 6 and 30 years in prison, while aggravated battery carries a sentence of between two and 5 years in prison.

One of Chicago’s most Wanted has Aurora roots

CHICAGO – The Chicago Crime Commission has issued new Most Wanted list with 10 fugitives that they want to capture, and among them there is a former Aurora resident.

Miguel Martinez, 30, is charged with conspiracy to commit mul-tiple shootings and murders, and other violent crimes related to a war between gangs in Aurora during the summer of 2002.

The commission said that Martinez, a twice-convicted felon, was considered the second in command of the Insane Deuces, a gang whose territory covers the Aurora area.

Martinez is one of 16 members of the Insane Deuces gang that was charged in 2005 with conspiracy to commit three murders, several attempted murders and more than $1 million in drug traf-ficking. All were found guilty and are serving sentences between 20 years and life in prison. Martinez is the only one still at-large.

Martinez, who is known as “Fat Mike” or “Big Mike”, is 6-foot-1, weighing 220 to 250 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the U.S. Marshals at (877) 926-8332.

CHICAGO – La Comisión Contra el Crimen de Chicago ha emitido una nueva lista de los 10 más buscados de la ciudad, y entre ellos está un ex residente de Aurora.

Miguel Martínez, de 30 años de edad, está acusado de conspiración para cometer múltiples tiroteos y asesinatos y otros crímenes violentos en conexión con una guerra entre pandillas en Aurora durante el verano de 2002.

La comisión dijo que Martínez ya ha sido convicto dos veces y estaba considerado como el segundo al mando de la pandilla Insane Deuces, cuyo territorio abarca el área de Aurora.

Operativo “No Negativa” arroja 12 choferes ebrios

GENEVA – El más reciente operativo de “No Negativa”, una colaboración entre agencias de la ley de nueve municipalidades del condado, así como la ofi-cina del Alguacil del Condado de Kane y la Policía Estatal de Illinois, tuvo un saldo de 12 automovilistas ebrios durante el fin de semana del 4 de julio.

De los 12, tres inicialmente se negaron a dar una muestra para medir el ni-vel de alcohol en la sangre. Cuando fueron informados que los oficiales podían obtener una orden para poder obtener una muestra de sangre, aliento u orina, uno de los tres que se negaron cambió de opinión y proporcionó la muestra solicitada.

Los otros dos automovilistas se negaron a proporcionar una muestra, aún cuando se les mostró la orden para obtenerla, por lo que fueron notificados que pueden enfrentar cargos adicionales.

Los automovilistas ebrios registraron un nivel de alcohol en la sangre de entre .100 y .260. En Illinois el límite de alcohol en la sangre es de .08.

Cuando menos tres de los 12 acusados por manejar ebrios ya habían enfrenta-do cargos por manejar bajo la influencia del alcohol.

Carpentersville reportó dos automovilistas manejando bajo la influencia del alcohol; East Dundee, uno; Elgin, cuatro; Geneva, uno; Montgomery, uno; St. Charles, uno y Sugar Grove uno. La policía estatal también reportó una persona manejando bajo la influencia del alcohol.

Las municipalidades que participaron en el operativo y no reportaron ningún incidente fueron Sugar Grove y West Dundee, así como el Alguacil del Condado de Kane.

Este ha sido el cuarto operativo de su tipo desde mayo de 2008.De acuerdo a la Secretaría del Estado de Illinois, aproximadamente 50 mil

automovilistas son infraccionados cada año por manejar bajo la influencia del alcohol. De ellos, alrededor del 40 por ciento se niegan a dar una muestra para medir el nivel de alcohol en su organismo, negando de esta manera la recolec-ción de evidencia que el estado necesita para proseguir en un caso criminal. Los operativos de “No Negativa” están diseñados para asegurarse que la evidencia se obtiene de acuerdo a la ley.

Changes coming forred-light cameras

SPRINGFIELD – The fines generated by video and photo cameras installed near some intersections in the state will be easier to appeal come Jan. 1.

According to a new law signed by Gov. Pat Quinn, which goes into effect Jan. 1, 2011, the suburbs and the city of Chicago won’t be able to assess a quota to those who appeal the fines for driving through a red light at red-light camera intersections. The fines at these intersections are $100.

The law also states that drivers must make a complete stop before turning right on red, but now can stop after the stop line if no pedestrians are present.

The new lay also states that violations must be checked and approved by a law enforcement officer or a retired officer in the counties of DuPage, Kane, Lake, Madison, McHenry, St. Clair and Will.

SPRINGFIELD – Las multas generadas por las cámaras de video y fotogra-fía montadas cerca de algunas intersecciones en el estado serán más fáciles de apelar a partir del 1 de enero.

De acuerdo con una ley firmada por el gobernador Pat Quinn, que entra en efecto el 1 de enero de 2011, los suburbios y la ciudad de Chicago no podrán im-poner una cuota a quienes apelen las multas por pasarse un semáforo en rojo en las intersecciones donde hay cámaras que registran la infracción. Las multas por pasarse un semáforo en rojo en las intersecciones donde hay cámaras de video y fotografía son de 100 dólares.

Otras provisiones de la ley incluyen que los automovilistas deben hacer alto total antes de dar vuelta a la derecha con el semáforo en rojo, pero ahora podrán detenerse después de la línea de alto si no hay peatones presentes.

La nueva ley también especifica que las infracciones deben ser revisadas y aprobadas por un oficial de la ley o un oficial retirado en los condados de DuPa-ge, Kane, Lake, Madison, McHenry, St. Clair y Will.

GENEVA – The most recent ‘No refusal’ operation, a collaboration between local law enforcement agen-cies, the Kane County Sheriff and the Illinois State Police, netted 12 drivers charged with DUI during the 4th of July weekend.

OF the 12, three initially refused to provide a sample to measure their blood alcohol levels. When they were told that officers could obtain an order to get a blood, urine or breath sample, one of the three provided the requested sample.

Two others refused to provide a sample even after being served with a search warrant, and they were told they would face additional sanctions.

The samples collected from the drivers ranged from .100 to .268. Illinois’ legal limit is .08.

At least three of the defendants previously have been charged with DUI.

Of the municipalities that participated in the ope-ration, Carpentersville reported two people charged with DUI; East Dundee, one; Elgin, four; Geneva, one;

Montgomery, one; St. Charles, one and Sugar Grove, one. Illinois State Police also reported one.

Sugar Grove and West Dundee didn’t have any DUI charges, and the same goes for the Kane County She-riff.

The operation was conducted in the late at night and in the early morning hours of July 3 and 4 and July 4 and 5.

“I feel it is important to keep the pressure on drunken drivers whenever possible,” Kane County State’s Attorney John Barsanti said. “I also feel the ‘No Refusal’ operations plant a seed in the minds of those planning to drink and drive and that seed has had a deterrent effect.”

This operation was the fifth since May 2008.According to the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office,

approximately 50,000 motorists are cited each year for DUI. Of those, about 40 percent refuse to submit to a blood alcohol concentration test, denying the state lawfully allowed evidence needed to prosecute a cri-minal case. The No-Refusal operation is designed to ensure that the evidence is lawfully collected.

El documento, denominado argumento amistoso a favor de un de las partes, indica que no existe lugar jurídico para la demanda que el gobierno federal impuso contra la controversial ley de Arizona.

McCollum es candidato a gobernador de Florida por el Partido Republicano.El argumento fue firmado por representantes de Florida, Michigan, Alabama, Nebraska,

Pennsylvania, Carolina del Sur, Dakota del Sur, Virginia, Texas y el territorio estadouniden-se de las Islas Marianas.

El mismo día en que este documento era presentado en la corte, un grupo de líderes religiosos católicos y protestantes rechazó la ley SB 1070 de Arizona y dijeron que el go-bierno y el Congreso tienen una obligación ética y moral para sacar adelante una reforma migratoria justa y amplia.

“Arizona ha decidido tomar este asunto en sus propias manos con la posibilidad de que otros estados se le sumen”, dijo el obispo de Tucson y vicepresidente de la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de Estados Unidos, Gerald Kicanas.

“A los obispos de Estados unidos nos preocupa mucho el tono en el que, desde el Capito-lio, algunos se refieren a los inmigrantes”, dijo Kicanas durante su testimonio ante el subco-mité de Inmigración, Naturalización, Refugiados, Seguridad Fronteriza y Ley Internacional de la Cámara de Representantes en Washington.

“Y no podemos estar de acuerdo con los términos que se usan contra los inmigrantes a quienes se caracteriza como menos que seres humanos, cuando ninguna persona es ilegal a los ojos de Dios”.

En esta misma audiencia otros líderes religiosos pidieron el fin de las deportaciones que separan familias y un nuevo impulso bipartidista para una reforma migratoria.

ARIZONA – Florida Attorney General Bill McCullom presented July 14 a legal brief in the U. S District court in Arizona on behalf of nine states, supporting Arizona’s immigration law.

The document, called amicus brief, states that the lawsuit filed by the federal government against SB 1070 doesn’t have any legal grounds.

McCollum is running for governor of Florida as a Republican.The argument was signed by officials from the states of Florida, Michigan, Alabama, Ne-

braska, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Virginia, Texas and the Northern Mariana Islands.

That same day, a group of Catholic and Protestant church leaders rejected SB 1070 and said the government and Congress have an ethical and moral obligation to move forward on a com-prehensive immigration reform.

“Arizona has decided to take matters into their own hands, with the possibility of other states joining,” Gerald Kicanas, Bishop of Tucson and Vice President of the U.S. Conference of Ca-tholic Bishops, said.

“US bishops are worried about the tone in which some speak about immigrants, from the Capitol,” Kicanas said during his testimony before the House Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security and International Law in Washington.

“We cannot agree with the way immigrants are described, they are characterized as being less than human beings, when nobody is illegal before God’s eyes.”

In this same audience other religious leaders asked for an end to deportations that are tearing families apart and for a renewed bipartisan effort to pass immigration reform.

CHICAGO – An alleged leader of a counterfeit identification document busi-ness that operated in Chicago’s Little Vil-lage Community has been extradited from Mexico to face federal charges here, includ-ing racketeering conspiracy and murder-related offenses.

The defendant, Manuel Leija-Sanchez, 43, was arraigned July 13 in U.S. District Court on eight counts, including racketeer-ing conspiracy, murder in aid of racketeer-ing, conspiracy to murder, conspiracy to commit murder outside the United States, money laundering, bulk cash smuggling, and alien smuggling.

He pleaded not guilty and remains in fed-eral custody without bond. A status hearing was scheduled for Aug. 26. Leija-Sanchez was arrested in Mexico in October 2007 and remained in custody in Mexico until Mexi-can authorities surrendered him to U.S. law enforcement agents July 9.

The charges are part of Operation Paper Tiger, an investigation conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that, in April 2007, resulted in charges against 24 defendants and dismantled an al-leged fraudulent document ring that operat-ed in and around the Little Village Discount Mall and generated nearly $3 million in an-nual profits.

Manuel Leija-Sanchez allegedly operated the bustling fraudulent document business since 1993 with his brothers, Julio Leija-Sanchez and Pedro Leija-Sanchez. The Mexico-based Leija-Sanchez organization

was supervised by an overall leader living in Chicago, and the leadership position rotated among the three Leija-Sanchez brothers, according to an October 2007 indictment. The leader in Chicago and others allegedly ordered violent acts against competitors, ri-vals and others.

“We are grateful to the Mexican authori-ties for extraditing Mr. Leija-Sanchez to the United States to face these serious charges,” said Gary Hartwig, Special Agent-in-Charge of the ICE Office of Homeland Security In-vestigations in Chicago.

The indictment alleged that the organiza-tion sold as many as 50 to 100 sets of fraud-ulent identification documents each day, charging customers approximately $200 to $300 cash per “set,” consisting of a Social Security card and either an Immigration “green card” or a state driver’s license.

Manuel Leija-Sanchez and his brothers allegedly conspired to murder Guillermo Jimenez-Flores, a former member of their organization who became a fledgling rival and was allegedly shot to death in Mexico in April 2007 by co-defendant Gerardo Sala-zar-Rodriguez, who was paid by and con-spired with the three Leija-Sanchez broth-ers. The same four defendants also allegedly conspired about the same time to kill a sec-ond victim in Mexico.

Pedro Leija-Sanchez and Salazar-Rodri-guez are both in custody in Mexico, while Julio Leija-Sanchez was arrested in Chicago and remains in custody while awaiting trial.

If convicted of the most serious charges against him, Manuel Leija-Sanchez faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole.

NUEVA YORK – La Oficina de Inmigración y Aduanas (ICE, por sus siglas en inglés) ha cambiado su táctica y ahora se enfoca en auditorías a empresas para detectar a indocumentados, de acuerdo a un periódico estadouni-dense.

El diario New York Times dijo en su edición del 10 de julio que en el último año las autoridades de inmigración han realizado auditorías a los documentos presentados por los trabajadores cuando buscan empleo en unas dos mil 900 empresas, que ha n sido multadas por un total de tres millones de dólares.

Entre los patrones este tipo de auditoría se conoce como ‘redadas silenciosas’, que obligan a los patrones a despe-dir a los trabajadores indocumentados, los hacen acreedores a multas y les dificulta la contratación de inmigrantes.

Las llamadas redadas silenciosas en general no terminan en deportaciones, pero causan que los trabajadores in-documentados pierdan su empleo y que sea difícil encontrar otro trabajo.

El diario señaló que este tipo de redada impacta de forma especial a la agricultura, y la Federación Laboral infor-mó que por lo menos el 60 por ciento de los campesinos son indocumentados mexicanos.

La publicación puso como ejemplo la compañía Gebbers Farms, una empresa donde una auditoría detectó a 500 trabajadores indocumentados. La compañía tuvo que despedirlos y batallar para encontrar trabajadores suplentes.

A seis meses de la auditoría la compañía no tiene suficientes trabajadores para reacoger la cosecha de manzana, por lo que se teme que la cosecha se va a perder, afectando también a quienes trabajan en las empacadoras de man-zana. El diario indicó que el 80 por ciento de quienes realizan este trabajo son latinos o hispanos. Mientras tanto, los trabajadores que fueron despedidos a raíz de la auditoría continúan sin trabajo.

Por su parte, ICE dijo que esta agencia está tratando de crear una nueva cultura en las compañías, de revisar los documentos de los empleados.

John Morton, director de ICE, dijo que sus agentes se están enfocando en los patrones más notables para realizar este tipo de auditorías.

NEW YORK – The Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office has changed its tactics to find undocumented workers and now focuses its efforts in audits of companies to find undocumented workers, accor-ding to a newspaper.

The New York Times said in its July 10 issue that during the last year immigration authorities have conducted audits in about 2,900 compa-nies, checking the documents employees present to obtain employment at those sites. The fines to those companies are about 3 million dollars.

Amongst employers this tactic is known as ‘silent raid’, and it forces companies to fire undocumented workers, fines the companies for hiring people not allowed to work in the country and makes it more difficult to hire immigrants.

The silent raids usually don’t mean deportation for fired workers, but make it difficult for them to get a new job.

The newspaper said this type of enforcement has impacted the agricul-tural industry in a particular way. The Labor Federation has said that at least 60 percent of farm workers are undocumented Mexican workers.

An example of this situation is Gebbers Farms. An audit uncovered 500 undocumented immigrants who were working there. They were fired and the company had to scramble to find replacement for those workers.

Six months after the audit, the company still doesn’t have enough wor-kers to pick up the apples and the harvest may be lost, something that is also affecting the apple packing plants. The newspaper said that 80 per-cent of those who work here are Hispanics or Latinos. Meanwhile, those workers who were fired after the audit are still without a job.

Meanwhile, ICE said it’s trying to create a new culture of checking documentation for prospective employees.

ICE Director John Morton said that his agents are focusing more in important or noticeable employers to conduct this type of audits.

WASHINGTON – El Departamento de Estado de los Estados Unidos informó que un equipo de cinco personas de la Agencia Estadounidense de Ayuda Inter-nacional (USAID) está ayudando a oficiales mexicanos a evaluar los daños causados por el Huracán Alex.

En un comunicado de prensa el gobierno estadouni-dense dijo que había contribuido 100 mil dólares para la compra y distribución de materiales de emergencia.

Durante lo peor de la tormenta, la Secretaría de la

Defensa Nacional activó el plan DN3, para ayudar a la población civil después del paso del Huracán Alex por los estados de Nuevo León y Tamaulipas.

De acuerdo a agencias de seguros, las compañías aseguradoras pagarán alrededor de 7 mil reclamos por daños y pérdidas en vehículos, viviendas, comercios e industria.

Hasta el momento se han reportado mil 800 vivien-das dañadas, cuatro mil 100 vehículos afectados y al-rededor de mil 100 empresas han reportado algún tipo de daño.

tional Defense activated the DN3 plan to help ci-vilians in the aftermath of Hurricane Alex in the states of Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas.

According to insurance groups, insurance com-panies will pay about 7,000 claims for damages and loses to vehicles, homes, businesses and industry.

Until now there are over 1,800 reports of dama-ged homes, 4,100 automobiles damaged, and about 1,100 businesses have reported some sort of da-mage.

Ahora se dice que Talina Fernán- dez, madre de Mariana Levy quien fuera esposa de Pirru, es la culpable de este divorcio, ya que tiene embrujado al viudo de su hija.

“Ella quiere vengar a su hija, pues siente que fue una víctima de su ex yer- no y por eso le tiene una magia bien fuerte que lo hará siempre fracasar en el amor”, dijo una fuente confidencial al sitio de Internet Ce-lestrellas. La fuente pidió guardar el anonimato ya que dice haber sido víctima de la bruja contratada por Fernández, que se dice es una de las más reconocidas de Tepoztlán, Morelos.

“Esta bruja que ella consulta es de temer, porque di- cen que tiene un pacto directo con el diablo, por eso son tan fuertes sus malda- des, pero lo que no entiende Talina en su afán de lograr lo que quiere, es que ese tipo de magia se devuelve y ella lo va a pagar con salud”, dijo la fuente, quien ase-veró que Fernández también le había mandado hacer un “tra-bajo” a Ariel López Padilla, primer esposo de su hija.

La fuente aseguró que Fernández le hizo brujería a López Padilla después que su hija se divorciara de él, ya que no quería que se le acercara a ella y a su nieta María. “Cuando se divorciaron mandó a hacerle algo para que su vida se convirtiera en un desastre” finalizó la fuente.

Rumors have been circulating in Mexico over the alleged robbery that Gloria Trevi suffered at the hands of a group denominated “Zetas”.

Reports indicated the singer had received death threats from members of this organized crime group, who had stolen her belongings, as well as $70,000 which she apparently had received as payment for a concert in northern Mexico.

Because the singer didn’t immediately deny the facts, the information was taken for certain. Besides, Trevi didn’t attend a court hearing her mother had July 9, prompting rumors that she was afraid of going back to Mexico after the incident.

However, Trevi set the record straight during an interview in the network show Primer Im-pacto. She said she is in the United States polishing the last details of her new album. Trevi also mentioned that she wasn’t in Mexico when the alleged robbery happened and that she never carries any cash when she travels.

Fuertes rumores han estado circulando en México sobre el supuesto robo del que fue objeto Gloria Trevi a manos de los “Zetas”.

Sin embargo, Trevi desmintió los hechos en el programa Primer Impacto. Aclaró que ella está en Estados Unidos terminando los detalles de la grabación de su nuevo álbum. Dijo que ella no se encontraba en México cuando aparentemente se dieron los hechos y que, además, ella nunca viaja con dinero en efectivo.

Los informes indicaban que la cantante había sido amenazada de muerte por integrantes de este grupo de delincuencia organizada, quienes les habían robado pertenencias y 70 mil dólares que era el pago de la cantante por su presentación en un concierto en el norte de México.

Como la cantante no desmintió los hechos de inmediato, la información se dio por cierta. Además, Trevi no se presentó a la audiencia que tuvo su madre en la corte el 9 de julio, por lo que se especuló que Trevi estaba atemorizada de entrar a México después del incidente.

Márquez pudiera jugar con los Red Bulls de la MLS

Se hacen más fuertes los rumores de que Rafael Márquez pudiera jugar con los Red Bulls de Nueva York en la liga MLS esta temporada.

Márquez, de 31 años, todavía está bajo contrato con el Barcelona, aunque no vio mucha acción durante la temporada pasada. Ahora el equipo está buscando transferirlo a otra organiza-ción, y se especula que la transferencia tiene un precio de 7 millones de dólares.

Erik Soler, director deportivo de los New York Bulls, dijo que el jugador francés Thierry Hen-ry, quien compartió cancha con Márquez en el Barcelona, ya ha sido contratado. Soler también dijo estar trabajando para contratar a otra gran estrella, pero se negó a dar nombre.

MEXICO – Mexican defense player Hector Moreno Barrera, who currently plays with the AZ Alkmaar in the Neth-erlands, will be honored as a knight by Queen Beatrice.

The honor is due to his exemplary be-havior inside and outside the soccer field, making him a role model for Dutch youth.

Moreno made the announcement during his visit with Jesus Aguilar Padilla, Gov-ernor of Sinaloa.

Upon hearing the news, the governor

immediately started the procedure before Congress, which will allow Moreno to receive such honor from the Dutch gov-ernment. Mexican Congress has to give authorization to receive these recognitions because they are diplomatic in nature.

“Hector has brought us such a surprise, everybody in Sinaloa must be proud, par-ticularly the sports community, of this recognition from the government and the Queen of the Netherlands,” said Aguilar Padilla.

He said this is something unheard of for a Mexican player.

CD. DE MÉXICO – El presidente Felipe Calderón informó que ha realizado ajustes a su equipo de gobierno.

Durante una conferencia de prensa realizada en la residencia oficial de Los Pinos el 14 de julio, Calderón informó que los secretarios de Gobernación, de Economía y de la oficina de la Presidencia de la República habían sido separados de sus cargos.

El secretario de Gobernación, Fernando Gómez Mont, será reemplazado por José Francisco Blake del estado de Baja California. Gómez Mont salió de su cargo después de que renunciara al partido oficialista PAN al no estar de acuerdo con las alianzas políticas entre su partido y el PRD.

Mientras tanto, Gerardo Ruiz Mateos deja la secretaría de Economía para hacerse cargo de la oficina de la Presidencia de la República. Bruno Ferrari, titular de ProMéxico está ahora a cargo de la Secretaría de Economía.

La titular de la oficina de la Presidencia, Patricia Flores Elizondo, deja su puesto en medio de fuertes rumores de desacuerdos con miembros del gabinete de Calderón.

MEXICO CITY – Mexico’s president Felipe Calderon informed that he had made chan-ges to his cabinet.

During a press conference held at Los Pinos presidential home July 14, Calderon said the-re were changes in the ministry of Interior, Economy and the office of the President.

Secretary of Interior Fernando Gomez Mont will be replaced by Jose Francisco Blake, a former congressman from the state of Baja California. Gomez Mont left his post after re-signing his membership from the official party, PAN, in protest for the alliance of his party with PRD.

Meanwhile, Gerardo Ruiz Mateos has moved from the Secretary of Economy to take charge of the office of the President. Bruno Ferrary, head of ProMexico, will be in charge of the Secretary of Economy.

Patricia Flores Elizondo, who has the head of the office of the President, left her post amid rumors of strong disagreements with members of the cabinet.

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA – Ar-gentina legalized same sex marriage, be-coming the first country in Latin America in giving homosexual and lesbian couples the same legal rights, responsibilities and pro-tections reserved until now for heterosexual marriages.

After a long session that ended in the early morning hours of July 15, Senators approved the law with 33 votes in favor, 27 against and 3 no votes. The law had been approved by the House of Representatives and Presi-dent Cristina Fernandez is in favor of it, so it will become effective once is published in the official newspaper.

The law was passed even when the Catho-lic Church and some evangelical groups launched a campaign to defeat it. They brought over 60,000 people to march outside the Congress building and asked parents at churches and schools to work to defeat the law.

Meanwhile, singer Ricky Martin sent a message to the people of Argentina about this issue in his Twitter page.

“¡Let’s go, Argentina! Same rights with the same names for everybody. #gay marriage#Human Rights#” the Puerto Rican

singer wrote.It is expected that a considerable amount

of gay and lesbian couples get married in Buenos Aires, a city that has been described as more accepting of gay couples than others in the region.

The debate preceding the vote took almost 16 hours, and while the debate was going on in the Congress building, outside groups of people in favor and against the law were holding vigil.

The law gives same-sex marriages the same rights and obligations that heterosexu-al couples have, including the right to adopt children and inherit wealth.

President Fernandez, who is on an official trip in China, spoke against the campaign the Catholic Church and other religious groups launched to defeat the law.

“It’s very worrisome to hear words like ‘God’s War’ or ‘the devil’s project,’ things that recall the times of the Inquisition,” she said.

Some who are against the law see political reasons behind the president’s support of the measure. Argentina will have presidential elections next year and Fernandez’ husband, former president Nestor Kirchner, is expect-ed to run again.

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA – Argentina legalizó el matrimonio entre homosexuales, convirtiéndose así en el primer país de Latinoamérica en dar a los homosexuales y lesbianas los mismos derechos, responsabilidades y protecciones legales que a los matrimonios hetero-sexuales.

Después de una maratónica sesión que terminó en la madrugada del 15 de julio, los legislado-res del senado votaron, aprobando la ley con 33 votos a favor, 27 en contra y tres abstenciones. Esta ley ya había sido aprobada con anterioridad por la Cámara Baja y la presidenta Cristina Fernández la apoya, así que entrará en efecto tan pronto sea publicada en el diario oficial del país.

La ley fue aprobada a pesar de las objeciones de la iglesia católica y de grupos evangélicos, quienes convocaron a más de 60 mil personas a marchar en el Congreso y exhortaron a padres de familia en iglesias y escuelas a trabajar para evitar la aprobación de esta ley.

Mientras tanto, el cantante Ricky Martin, en su página de la red social Twitter, envió un men-saje a los argentinos.

“Argentina ¡vamos! Los mismos derechos con los mismos nombres para todos. #Matrimonio Gay # Derechos Humanos”, escribió el boricua.

Se espera que una considerable cantidad de parejas de lesbianas y homosexuales contraigan matrimonio, ya que ellos han encontrado que Buenos Aires es un lugar más abierto donde su relación es más aceptada.

El debate sobre la aprobación de la ley se prolongó por casi 16 horas en el Congreso de Bue-nos Aires, mientras que grupos de personas a favor y en contra de la ley hacían vigilia esperando la votación final.

Con la aprobación de la ley, los matrimonios entre personas del mismo sexo tendrán los mis-mos derechos y obligaciones que los matrimonios entre heterosexuales, incluyendo el derecho a adoptar niños y a recibir herencias.

La presidenta Fernández, quien se encuentra en visita de estado en China, habló en contra de la campaña que inició la iglesia católica contra la propuesta y contra la postura que algunos grupos religiosos han tomado en el tema.

“Me preocupa escuchar las palabras ‘Guerra de Dios’ o ‘el proyecto del diablo’, estas cosas hacen recordar la era de la Inquisición”, dijo Fernández.

Algunos opositores a esta ley han dicho que el apoyo de Fernández es una movida política, ya que el año que entra hay elecciones presidenciales y se espera que su esposo, el ex presidente Néstor Kirchner, se lance de nuevo como candidato.
