~~~~~ Presidents Report ~~~~~
Hi Northern Gateway Members To start with I have just followed our fearless ride leader Blip for the trip to the Moogarah Dam. Great ride, great organisation and a good ride home. Having known Blip for a hundred years, our return home consisted of two dirt roads (short and good dirt) that I should have known was bound to happen. Certainly a pat on the back for Blip and our fearless ride coordinator Geoff Sheather. This highlights the way I would like to see rides happen as I am sure others would agree. A tiny bit of "short/good/dry" dirt opens up a number of places we otherwise would not be able to access. Having been in the ride coordinator role, I can state that it is almost impossible to identify a place to go that has not previously been on a ride calendar. One of the things that add to a ride is what you do on the way, what you do when you get there or what you do on the way home. It’s all about variety. That is why we are doing an overnight ride on the 14/15th Sept but it is more than a ride - it's a game of lawn bowls as well as night time entertainment. What I would ask you as a member is that if you have ideas you think could be a 'goer', let Geoff know. What you suggest does not mean it is now your baby to develop - your Committee will take it from there. Keep your Committee in mind when you have a great idea and don't forget Sandy - the newsletter is a good forum for you to express any thoughts or ideas. Enjoy Your Club Twiggy Branch President Northern Gateway
~~~Editors Report:~~~

I hope everyone is enjoying the articles I source, well, from wherever I can ☺ Face book, Google and the W.W.W is a great tool to find interesting stuff. We lose two of our Advertisers this month one as she has moved out of Brisbane to the far North, thank you Vicki’s Hair and Makeup for the past years support, and sadly Neds is retiring due to ill health, it’s about time to enjoy life instead of working he said, I think we can all relate to that. Thanks Neds, we hope you have a full recovery and many many enjoyable retirement years. Ken cook asked me to give a plug about CAMEC Pty Ltd for giving him such great discounts and service recently, I was so impressed by what Ken told me I rang the Retail Manager Joel Young thinking that they would be great advertisers with the amount of RV’s and Campers currently in use within the branches and Club as a whole. Joel was very interested and has taken out a full page ad. Joel has suggested if members require anything to let him know and he will put a list of specials together, so let me know and I’ll pass it on. So welcome aboard CAMEC, Ken now you can personally recommend this great company. ☺ I would like you all to show our thanks to our sponsors and advertisers by supporting them as they do us ☺ Ride safe. ~~~Web Editors Report:~~~

I have now finished updating Branch Contact details. I have had the photo replaced on the Branch Home Page, and I am hoping to do this about every 4 to 6 weeks. If anyone has a photo of a Branch Member with his or her bike, please forward it to me so as I can get it into the Members & their Bike photo section. I have started to trial “Where it is” Location Map Links on some of the Social Events, so I would like some feed-back on what you think about this. Otherwise all is going well with the Branch Website.

Sandy

I don't know if it's relevant or proper but maybe a call could go out in the next newsletter to riders to marshal for the (Bicycle) Ride to Conquer Cancer. The organisers are looking for motorcycle riders to act as escorts, help facilities, minor repair duties, etc for the ride on 17/18 August. I did this two years ago and had an absolute ball (I wrote an article in the newsletter about it at the time). Anyway we pay $50 to cover all services (they provide accommodation, all meals, water, sunscreen, shower and toilet facilities), we supply the bikes, petrol and enthusiasm. People wanting to help should call 1300 11 7433 to register. Regards Ken .

Staying Independent is my Goal

Recipe Corner

Ingredients

3/4 cup dry white wine

1/2 cup water

1 cup sliced fresh mushrooms

1/2 cup thinly-sliced carrots

1/4 cup thinly-sliced celery

1/2 tsp dried rosemary, crushed or

3 tsps fresh rosemary, chopped

Method

For poaching liquid, combine dry white wine and water. Stir in mush-

rooms, carrots, celery & rosemary. Bring to boil; reduce heat. Simmer,

covered, for 5 mins.

Add fish to skillet. Spoon poaching liquid over fish. Simmer, covered,

until fish flakes easily when tested with fork (about 6-8 mins). Using

slotted spoon, transfer the fish and vegetables to a platter; keep warm.

Simmer the poaching liquid, uncovered, about 5 mins or until reduced

to about 1/3 cup. Spoon sauce over fish and vegetables.

The stories I hear weekly from people struggling to overcome

health problems never cease to amaze me. The burdens so many

people are carrying can prove overwhelming, and sometimes just

talking can help put matters into perspective.

A big part of my work is talking to people. Talking and

discussing solutions, sharing experiences, and looking for options

that will fit their situation.

At the age of 65 with a spinal fusion and significant damage from

a ‘couple of motorcycle accidents’ (as a pillion passenger) behind

me, children, grandchildren and a healthy business for the past 35

years, I find I have much in common with the Baby Boomers and

Seniors that come for an appointment to see me. We have all

lived through an incredible time and now we are living for so

much longer, needing our body way past the retirement age of 65

which, at the start of the 20th century, was considered when our

life would be over.

I know I might live for another 30 years now, and I will need to

make my body last that long. My body-housekeeping has become

important to me and has a purpose. No longer content to get a

little flab off the legs or tummy, I have different goals – to be as

functional and strong and fit enough as possible to stay in my own

home, to enjoy physical things rather than sitting in a chair for

much of the day. I am looking ahead, and looking around at other

people my age and older, and making the decisions that will affect

how I age.

My work is in Prevention of chronic conditions, if we know what

needs to be prevented, eg. T2D, the Management of the condition

through lifestyle modification of diet and exercise, and then

Sustainable Programs of exercise post-surgery or treatment. My

work can be very rewarding, especially when I hear of progress

being made. Yesterday, when I enquired how someone was going

with their Lift for Life program, they looked directly into my eyes

and said,

“Victoria, it has been wonderful. I just can’t believe that I

would feel this way. I really had no expectations and it has just

made me feel so different and I am coping every day with

things so much better.”

The recurring comment I hear is, “I feel so much better”, and this,

to me, is the best possible outcome because if we ‘feel’ better, we

can sustain the behaviour. If we can sustain the behaviour we can

get health-related benefits.

I strongly believe in Exercise as Medicine and the Green Apple

Wellness Centre in Bald Hills has been my life work.

Implementing Wellness programs that solve problems and bring

happiness is the goal.

~~~ BBQ at Brisbane Motorcycles Caboolture ~~~ Friday 28 June
Every 3 or 4 months Brisbane Motorcycles Caboolture put on a special free BBQ and information night for the Redcliffe Ulysses branch and when I bought my current VFR from them they extended the invitation to Northern Gateway. This event does not include the general public. I was really impressed to see about 13 of our group turn up on the night, along with heaps from Redcliffe. After the sumptuous BBQ, which consisted of sausages, steak, hamburgers, onions, cheese and soft drinks, we were treated to a demonstration/showing of the new F6B Gold Wing plus one of the new off-road bikes. We then headed into the showroom and were given a briefing of all the latest helmets together with their addable gadgets and the evening ended with lucky door prize winners of various items of clothing, including t-shirts and jeans. The staff at BMC is extremely friendly, helpful and knowledgeable and any sales on the night were also able to take advantage of further discounts.
~~~ Brisbane Honda Caboolture BBQ ~~~

So all in all, a most enjoyable evening, which continued at the Bribie Island Road Golden Arches with hot chocolate, coffee and cake.

I know there will be another invitation to the same in about 4 months time, so hopefully we will have an even greater turnout. “You can forget what you do for a living when your knees are in the breeze” . . . ain’t that the truth! Louise

~~~ NORTHERN GATEWAY 10TH
ANNIVERSARY ~~~ 29 JUNE 2013
Preparations for this event started in about August 2012, with every meeting, email, phone call, text message, discussion, decision and all ideas culminating in a very successful and most enjoyable evening at the Geebung RSL on Saturday evening, 29 June 2013. It was held at this venue as that is where the first meeting of the Northern Gateway Branch was held 10 years ago. The room was decorated in our colours of navy/black and yellow and the room was the perfect size to hold the 65 people who attended. Mary displayed her amazing creative talents by creating the balloon decorations on each table and placing posters of past photos at one end of the room while our club banner and various shirts were displayed at the other end. We also had a special visitor . . . Tweety. We had been told he has been on sebatical, but rumours are he has been in jail, but whatever the reason it was good to see his wide-eyed little face again. The evening flowed on with much chatting and laughter, catching up with past present and new members, interspersed with the talented improvisation of our MC, Rick Bedford. The selection of finger foods disappeared rapidly as it did the rounds of the room, with even our few gluten intolerants being catered for. Unfortunately the technology side of things did not cooperate for Spicky so we got Jules and Barry to sing for us instead. They both managed to entertain the crowds very well, but we assured Barry he should not give up his day job! The lucky door prizes were won by Mal (the Marilyn Munro overnighter bag on wheels . . . . which I hope Tina will be using and not Mal!) and the bottle of Australia’s #1 Shiraz, won by Eric. There were speeches made by past and present presidents and the celebratory sponge cake decorated in yellow icing and chocolate wording cut by Mary with more than enough to serve everyone. A fantastic evening . . . even better than expected. So thanks to everyone . . past and present members, plus Michelle from the Gold Coast Branch, Russell and Keren from Redcliffe, Sherol and especially Rick for being our MC . . . . for making this evening the success that it was. Roll on 2023!!! Louise
~~~~ Breakfast In the Park – 7th July ~~~ Sunday 7th July did not start off as bright and beautiful, but Lionel and I set off anyway and were pleased to see Ken, Julie and Barry already there at the entrance to J.C. Slaughter Falls Park. Even though they had checked out the far BBQ area we did another reccy but no other NG bikers to be found. Back to the tables at the entry to choose the best spot, partly in the sun. The BBQ’s there are all the old wood burning variety and no wood available. It would have been a dismal cold breakfast BUT for Ken who must have been a Boy Scout, because he had been prepared for such dilemmas and had brought his ever-so-small but wonderful, gas stove. Actually I was told it uses metho or standard unleaded petrol. Anyway it worked like a treat and Ken cooked his bacon (actually he had forgotten that, but we had plenty) and eggs, ours as well and Barry’s steak. Rosie arrived, it being her second attempt as she had gone the day before as well. Lucky she lives not far away. Deb and Wendell arrived and Ken’s little stove went into action again. We even made toast on it so THREE CHEERS FOR KEN. Deb assured us Wendell had once lit a fire without matches but the stove was just too convenient that morning. It was an intimate little group and we had a great time. Mary,

~~~ Presidents Meeting Aratula 07 July 2013 ~~~ On the 7th of July, Julie and I attended a meeting at the Pub at Aratula. This was the third in a series of meetings that started after last years Memorial ride. The concept of the meetings is for members of the South East Queensland Branches to get together and claim dates for important events and discuss the possibilities of combined events. The meeting is normally for Presidents and Secretaries however this last meeting involved organisation of a ride and as Twiggy was already committed to and event he asked if I could attend and report back. The meeting was well attended with members from several branches throughout the region represented and I was glad that Northern Gateway can now be counted in that group. A few dates were claimed for certain events and they will be kept free with more info to follow in upcoming ride calendars. The main discussion point for this meeting was a combined ride (poker/dice run) to raise funds for the Ulysses Memorial Park. It was decided by the members present that All funds raised by the poker/dice run will be used to improve the grounds at the Memorial Park, and that all funds raised by the raffles on the day will be donated to UCARF. The cost of the ride will be $10.00 per head, with all Branches holding their own independent rides to meet at Aratula Pub at around 1230 for a sausage sizzle (to be run by one of the local charities and organised by the pub). Our committee have kindly ratified this and you will see on the calendar that we are having a dice run on that day. Entry will be $10.00 per player with all proceeds to go to the Memorial Park and a small prize for first and last. The meeting also agreed to meet again in 3 months and try to continue an ongoing fellowship between Branches within the region. I am sure that Northern Gateway committee on our behalf will continue to be a part of this exciting initiative. Cheers Geoff Ride Co-Ord. :)
~~~ Breakfast, Coffee & Chat~~~ At the Coffee Club, Nundah

Saturday 13 July

One of the few clearish mornings, but it was a chilly 8 degrees as Bob and I headed off from home to Nundah to catch up with the group for brekkie at the Coffee Club Did you know: “Nundah” means ‘chain of water holes’ With the upgrade of Sandgate Road in 2001 and the suburban renewal program in 2008, the village of Nundah has grown in leaps and bounds. There are new art installations, cafes and commercial enterprises, creating a village-like atmosphere along the now-quiet Sandgate Road. We were the first ones there but not for long. Altogether we had about 13 seated at the table outside. There were the regulars and some we hadn’t seen for a while. Even Larry the Lhama was back from his excursion. The coffees, teas and hot chocolates arrived promptly followed by a variety of food orders.

I can’t think of a better way to start the weekend – a ride, having breakfast served (so no cooking or washing up), catching up and chatting with friends. Louise

The new job Last Wednesday a passenger in a taxi heading for Central station leaned over to ask the driver a question and gently tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention. The driver screamed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus, drove up over the curb and stopped just inches from a large plate window. For a few moments everything was silent in the cab. Then, the shaking driver said "are you OK? I'm so sorry, but you scared the daylights out of me." The badly shaken passenger apologized to the driver and said, "I didn't realize that a mere tap on the shoulder would startle someone so badly." The driver replied, "No, no, I'm the one who is sorry, it's entirely my fault. Today is my very first day driving a cab. I've been driving a hearse for 25 years."

Ride Etiquette Our club rides are all about the journey and sharing the experience with the other riders and their companions. In appreciation of the inclusive nature of our rides, the range of bikes and diversity of rider experience, we ask that each rider:

• Arrive 15 minutes prior to departure with a full tank of fuel.

• Give the ride leader for the day the courtesy of listening to the briefing. Ensure that you know who the ‘Tail End Charlie’ is and what bike they are on.

• Ride at your own pace and allow others to do the same.

• Respect all road rules and speeds limits.

• Keep a safe distance at all times – the 3 second Rule is a reasonable guide.

• Travel in the left lane unless overtaking.

• Avoid passing the ride leader or falling behind tail-end Charlie.

• If you leave the ride early remember to advise the ride leader.

• During the ride, if you think someone has gone missing – ask the question. Better safe than sorry.

• We use the corner marking system and this negates the need for riders to keep up with the rider(s) in front of them.

Remember at all times that your safety is your responsibility.

Corner Marking All our Club rides utilise a standard corner marking protocol. The rider (behind Ride Leader) will be directed to where to mark the corner. The corner marker should ensure they position themselves clear of any danger. Corner markers should be in clear sight of the following riders and indicate the route taken. Marker is to remain in position until the Tail End Charlie signals their arrival, whereupon the marker can rejoin the group. The Corner Marker must remain in place until the Tail End Charlie arrives - even if it seems to take an eternity. Other people’s safety depends on this. Corner Markers rejoin the ride safely; if necessary join after the TEC as and when traffic permits. Riders are asked to observe and assist this procedure to maximise everyone’s safety and enjoyment. Note: If a new member or any rider feels that they need to build their confidence we have a couple of suggestions. Firstly, practice riding more often, perhaps with a more experienced club member. Or better, book a course with an accredited rider training school to help you identify your weaknesses and overcome them.

What are The Ulysses club aims?

To provide ways in which older motorcyclists can get together for companionship and mutual support.

To show by example that motorcycling can be an enjoyable and practical activity for riders of all ages.

To draw the attention of public and private institutions to the needs and views of older riders.

~~~ New Official Ulysses AGM Event ~~~ ‘Ulysses Annual Beer Competition’
Some of you may be aware that for the past six years I have held an Annual Ulysses Home Brew Competition at the AGM’s; a few of our branch members compete each year. Peter Thoeming (thebear) has been the sponsor of this event first with Australian Road Rider and now Australian Motorcycle Magazine. Over the years we have had some prominent judges, including the CEO’s of Triumph Aust and Suzuki, Ex Presidents of the National Committee and other prominent Motorcycle identities. The winner receives either an engraved Crystal or Pewter beer mug, and is in a feature of the event in the following months AMM. This year at Maryborough AGM the competition was such a success that as of next year, Alice AGM, the event will be an ‘Official Ulysses AGM Event’. I’m quite chuffed ☺ So if you brew or have thought of giving it ago, get going, get those beers ready ☺ this is going to be a big event ☺ Cheers Sandy
~~~ New Norton Domiracer uncovered! ~~~

By Marc Potter, 10 July 2013. Originally appeared in Classic Bike Guide

These are the first pictures of Norton’s new Domiracer, taken inside the Norton factory. The cover was pulled off as Classic Bike Guide visited the Norton factory last week and we managed to grab these snaps... The exclusive images were taken as Norton put the finishing touches to the prototype of its new twin-cylinder Domiracer at its Donington Park headquarters. Using a version of the current 961cc Norton Commando engine, an all-new Featherbed-style tubular steel frame, café racer styling, and a traditional hand-beaten Aluminium tank, the new bike is now on sale. Just fifty Domiracers will be built at a price of £24,000, and you’ll have to pay an extra £2000 to get the bike made road legal through a process called Single Vehicle Type Approval.

The bike is the brainchild of former Triumph employee, and now Norton’s technical design genius, Simon Skinner. He said: “I wanted to build a bike that was the pure essence of a café racer, with no expense spared. “The kind of bike that I would build; if I took home a Norton Commando and stripped it down to its bare essentials.” The bike apes the look of the sixties Domiracer right down to the style of the exhausts, but it wasn’t meant to be a copy, it is merely the combination of Norton CEO Stuart Garner and Simon Skinners vision for a modern café racer that harks back to the golden era. Using Ohlins forks, Brembo brakes and Ohlins rear suspension, the Domiracer promises fine handling. And although on the surface it may appear to use the same chassis as the modern Commando, it’s actually all new with a curved backbone rather than the Dominator’s straight bar running alongside the bike. The curved swingarm is new, and the further you get into the bike you can see details like the footrest heel guards which Skinner designed to look like they’re floating in mid-air, with bolts neatly screwed in from the back. The seat unit, mocked up here, will be proper carbon fibre, along with a carbon fibre airbox to help the bike mix old with new. The handmade exhausts also ape days gone by, and the top yoke is machined out of billet aluminium in Norton’s factory.

Full technical details of the bike are not yet available. . Sourced from the WWW.

~~~Time to LOL ( Laugh Out Loud) ~~~
My dog's secret...My dog sleeps about 20 hours a day. He has his food
prepared for him. He can eat whenever he wants.
His meals are provided at no cost to him.
He visits the Doctor once a year for his check-up, and again during the
year if any medical needs arise.
For this he pays nothing and nothing is required of him. He lives in a
nice neighbourhood in a house that is much larger than he needs, but he is
not required to do any upkeep.
He makes no contribution to the running or maintenance of the house.
If he makes a mess, someone else cleans it up.
He has his choice of luxurious places to sleep. He receives these
accommodations absolutely free.
He is living like a King, and has absolutely no expenses whatsoever.
All of his costs are picked up by others who go out, work hard, and earn a
living every day. I was just thinking about all this, and suddenly it hit me
like a brick in the head...I think my dog might be an illegal IMMIGRANT! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One day I accidentally overturned my golf cart. Elizabeth, a very attractive and keen golfer who lived in a villa on the golf course, heard the noise and called out, “Are you okay, what's your name?" "It’s Jack , and I’m OK thanks," I replied. "Jack , forget your troubles. Come to my villa, rest a while, and I'll help you get the cart up later." "That's mighty nice of you," I answered, but I don't think my wife would like it. "Oh, come on," Elizabeth insisted. She was very pretty and persuasive. "Well okay," I finally agreed." After a restorative brandy, and some driving and putting lessons, and etc. I thanked my host. "I feel a lot better now, but I know my wife is going to be really pissed " "Don't be silly!” Elizabeth said with a smile, “She won't know anything. Where is she, anyway?" "Under the cart!" I said....
~~~ Supper Night at Twiggy’s ~~~ Was a great night with branch members and a few friends from the Brisbane Branch. The food was awesome, well done Twiggy and Dale, and all the great cooks. It was a last minute idea to have some gambling, such as Roulette and Poker; we have some good bluffers in the branch. Over all it was a lot of laughs. I got enough info for a rumour file to last the rest of the year but I think I better keep my lips sealed hey Julie Jones ☺ See you all at the next one.

~~~ Breakfast, Coffee and Chat ~~~ Doug’s Seafood Restaurant Sandgate: Saturday 27
th July
Doug’s is a nice little place where outside diners can enjoy a decent-sized, inexpensive breakfast with a nice view of Moreton Bay thrown in for free. I counted only fourteen NG Ulysseans - which was fortunate because there’s not room outside for many tables and we’d grabbed every spare chair. In fact anyone who arrived after Latte was going to need skyhooks! Of course the seating situation was not helped by a large contingent of, “Men in Tights” or “Lads in Lycra”. These two-wheeled tyros had arrived before us and were busily engaged in a peacock-like display guaranteed to put diners off their meals and frighten small children.
Rob Dixon rolled up on his new Victory – the beast looks like a medium-sized conventional cruiser but has an engine capacity close to 1800cc so I’m guessing it can zip along very nicely, and the Joneses came as Bonnie and Clyde – Rob on his “vintage” Goldwing and Gail comfortably tucked up in the sidecar with the Thompson’s on her lap. Rob told me he’s fitted quick-release so in an emergency he can jettison the sidecar and leave the occupant to make her own arrangements. Nice work Rob! Ride safe and remember to check those tyre pressures! Hamster Huey
~~~ Moorgerah Dam ~~~

28/7/13 one.

Hi fellow riders, Good turn out for Sunday's ride, with about 20 riders and pillions (including a new couple) and Blip at the helm for our ride to Moorgerah Dam. The ride brief began and Blip spoke of where we were heading, with smoko at Beaudesert. So off we went through Telegraph Road, Gateway Bridge and down through Redlands, Mt Cotton Road Cornubia; where our new couple along for the ride had trouble (battery died). With the kind assistance of Geoff and fellow members they managed to get the bike going and with that the couple decided to call it a day and headed for home. We continued on to Beaudesert where we had smoko in the park and spoke of our day’s travels so far. We then went off to our destination, Moogerah Dam. We travelled through Rathdowney and turned off towards Boonah. There was great views and riding, and we arrived at the Dam just after midday. All fed we set off again, with a short talk from Blip saying we're going to travel on dirt road. Most of us followed Blip and were rewarded with not only dirt road, but some beautiful scenery along the way. We ended up riding through Marburg, kholo, Mt Crosby, Brookfield, Kenmore, Gap Creek road back to the north side, where everybody then headed their own way home.

Overall we had a great day, thanks Blip, members and the new couple for coming out. Until the next ride! Cheers, John L

~~~ Moogerah Dam ~~~
28/7/13 Two. There may have been a few showers at home but when we all met around 8 am at Carseldine the skies were blue and all looked good for our Sunday Ride. Blip was the ride leader for the day and warned the riders that he planned to include some "roadworks" (actually gravel road) on his way home. At 8.30am we headed off with 17 bikes and because we needed to get south side without too much delay took the Gateway Motorway with our exit towards Mt Cotton and a scenic wind around some different roads finally joining the main road just north of Beenleigh where we turned off again passing lots of suburbs I had never even heard of and more than a few acreage properties with LOTS of horses. Quite a pretty drive passing through Wolffdene and Mundoolun on our way to Beaudesert for our morning tea stop in the park. Many flasks and picnics came out from top boxes and panniers and others popped in to nearby shops to buy something but it was nice to take a break and socialize with around 20 people that went on to the stop. Louise had prepared a pop quiz for us to see how much we knew about Moogerah Dam. Not that much real knowledge but plenty of guesses later we found answers and were rewarded with lolly snakes. We briefly met a new couple but unfortunately they had battery trouble and decided to head home earlier. Spicky also had to head home as he felt unwell but it was good to have their company even if only for part of the day.
Down the Mt. Lindsay Highway, through Rathdowny and then winding our way across to Mt. Maroon and Dam before turning onto the Moogerah Dam road and enjoying the water views for several kilometres before we arrived at the rather beautiful picnic grounds nearby the Dam wall. The cafe there was good for some while packed lunches and even a BBQ sausage sizzle filled the bellies of us all. Most even went for a short walk across the Dam wall before we looked at the weather and thought it best to keep moving. We went firstly to fuel our bikes at Aratula, saying goodbye to some of the group that headed straight home. 10 bikes followed on bravely heading to the Rosevale Road which is part of the Scenic Rim Route 16 tourist drive. Just 6.8 kilometres of that "roadworks" gravel road proved no problem to everyone with Blip pushing on solidly out the front and Cam tucked right in behind enjoying playing on the gravel. We didn't have to stop for long before the rest of the group caught up with Lionel and Mary on their Spyder lucky to have their three wheels. The trip along the foothills was quite scenic as we past the historic pub at Rosevale and wound around the country roads somehow missing all the rain and bad weather. It seemed whichever way we had to turn next took us to blue sky and white clouds yet all around was threatening grey cloud and often rain just behind us or wet roads ahead but not a drop of rain fell on the lucky Northern Gateway Riders. Thanks go to whoever was in charge of the weather for our Sunday ride. It had been a great day and lots of kilometres as we crossed the highway headed to Fernvale, backing around through Pine Mountain and crossing the Brisbane River at Kholo Crossing then the Mt Crosby road before sneaking across to The Gap Creek Road to finish. Blip is certainly one who stays OFF the highway and main roads if possible and a look at the map shows our day was spent doing a big circle around the city and enjoying both good company and a nice change to be visiting the south and the Scenic Rim. I'm sure everyone enjoyed their day. Di.
~~~ SPIED! TRIUMPH TOURING CRUISERS ~~~

Brits Aim for the Heart of the American Cruiser Market

Written by: Aaron Frank on July 11 2013

Triumph’s current model lineup includes a handful of cruisers, but none are what you’d call traditional. From the

middleweight America and Speedmaster—both Bonnevilles in drag—to the Thunderbird parallel twin and the class-of-

one Rocket III, these are all unique alternatives to the conventional, classic-styled V-twins that currently define the

cruiser segment. But with cruisers accounting for roughly 50 percent of all motorcycle sales in America, that trend is

impossible to ignore. The two Triumph cruiser prototypes shown here, spied undergoing testing in Spain, suggest that

Triumph is now aiming directly at the fat-fendered heart of the heavyweight cruiser class.

That’s not a liquid-cooled Electra Glide! Look closely and you’ll see this isn’t a Milwaukee-made test mule but, rather, a Triumph hidden

by Harley-Davidson bodywork.

You’re forgiven for mistaking the full-dress bagger for a Harley-Davidson Electra Glide, as we did at first. Look closely

and you’ll see that it actually appears to be a Triumph development chassis—complete with adjustable billet

headstock—fit with the 1597cc parallel twin from the Thunderbird and then hung with Harley-Davidson bodywork and

controls, including the Tour Pack and Batwing fairing. Interestingly, the wheels appear to be from a Victory Cross

Country model. This machine provides a fascinating glimpse at Triumph’s prototype development process and a step

beyond typical benchmarking, allowing Triumph engineers to assess exactly how the class leader’s best attributes apply

directly to their platform. It makes good camouflage, too.

~~~ SPIED! TRIUMPH TOURING CRUISERS ~~~
Cont:
This makes perfect sense.
Touring cruisers are a lucrative segment, and Harley-Davidson’s FL models have defined that segment for decades. Any
worthy competitor will have to at least match, if not exceed, that bike’s best attributes. But Harley’s hard-bagged bikes
aren’t Triumph’s only target—spy photographers also captured evidence of a Road King-styled touring cruiser that also
appears to be based on the Thunderbird chassis, with the same liquid-cooled, 1597cc parallel twin for power. The addition
of soft-sided saddlebags, a removable windscreen, spotlights and deep-skirted fenders completely transforms the
musclebike character of the Thunderbird, making it appeal to a much broader segment of the current cruiser market that
prefers classic American styling.
It looks like Triumph will also stake a claim in what’s called the “classic cruiser” category with this Road King-esque
version of its 1600cc Thunderbird parallel twin.
It’s easy to dismiss these prototypes as derivative, but there’s no denying this is where the market sits—Road King sales
no doubt dwarf those of Thunderbirds. Triumph was once renowned for following its own path with bikes like the Rocket
III, Speed Triple, and three-cylinder Daytona sportbike. Lately, however, the company has also found success by
designing products perfectly aligned with current market trends, like the Tiger and Explorer adventure bikes and the
Trophy sport-tourer—any of which could be cynically called BMW knock-offs. Why not target Harley-Davidson next? If
they can create a functional facsimile of the FL with just enough unique Triumph character to stand apart, they will be
worthy—and successful—additions to the cruiser marketplace. Read more: http://blogs.motorcyclistonline.com/spied-triumph-touring-cruisers-37241.html#ixzz2ZA1gCW5a
~~~Tom’s Travels – July 2013 ~~~

Well this time 2 months have passed by. I managed to make the June Social Meeting just before flying south for my annual visit for Mums Birthday. Then on my return of course the Branch 10

th Anniversary function at the Geebung RSL

Club. What a very fitting place to hold our Anniversary, the very place where we met to decide on forming the Branch. I returned to Standown Park and prepared to hit the road again. This time I’m heading to Lawn Hill National Park up in the Gulf Country, about 300klms north of Mt Isa. But as usual, I’m in no hurry, as I’m not booked in until the last 2 weeks of August. The first day of travel, Wednesday 3

rd July I made it to Ceratodus Rest Area 11klms north of Eidsvold, on the

banks of the Burnett River. I was planning on travelling to Wuruma Dam, about another 30 klms further on, but being the School Holidays I thought it might be a tad crowded at the Dam, and this spot did look quite nice. I stayed Ceratodus Rest Area for 2 nights and during my stay I was told by some Council Workers, that this spot was much better than Wuruma Dam which was very crowded. A bit of history about this place; there was a Monument Stone marking the first Police Barracks in the North Burnett Region which was 1 klms downstream from this current location. This was actually a part of the NSW Police Corp. Also located here was the original Ceratodus Railway Station Ticket Office which had been relocated from 1 klms upstream and it was one of the major stops for the train running in-between Kingaroy & Monto. Friday 5

th July when I woke up there was misty rain falling, and as I was back on the road again, so it caused some

minor problems while packing up. Just after lunch I ended up at The Dawson River Rest Area, on the banks of the Dawson River, 7 klms west of the Coal Mining town of Moura. This is a great Free Camp Area handy to town on shores of a Weir. Most days all but a few of the travellers stopping here are back on the road again, but each night there can be up to 60 Tents, Camper Trailers, and Caravans & Motorhomes. A few days after arriving I meet up with a chap who I had met over in the Kimberly back in 2010, and the next day I met a couple I had been camping with at Meandarra in Western Qld 2 years ago. Most of my time at Dawson River Rest Area the night were mildish and the days were great & sunny. On Saturday 13

th July there was a Camp Oven Cook Off held at this Rest Area, with all proceeds going to Moura

Apex Fish Restocking Group. This is the group that maintains this Rest Area. So I supported them by purchasing a Camp Oven meal for dinner that evening. This also saved me cooking my own feed. But waiting in the que didn’t do my knee any good at all, although this was over come by me winning the Raffle, a $100 IGA Gift Voucher, so this will come in very handy. Well time come for me to move on, so on Wednesday 20

th July I headed off through Rollingston, Springsure & Emerald

to Sapphire. I think the last time I covered this section of road was 1994, when I was on my XJ900 heading to the Ulysses National AGM Alice Springs. I had actually forgotten how hilly this stretch of road was. There were 2 or 3 ranges, none of them really big, but I suppose out in this region a Mountain Range of 445 metres is fairly big. The Veterans Retreat I have settled into is at the Sapphire/Gemfields RSL Club. A small area, but a very friendly group to welcome me and lead my astray. A few days after arriving I meet up with another couple who I had met over in the Kimberly’s back in 2010, and the next day I met a couple I had been camping with at Meandarra in Western Qld last year. A very small world. On Thursday 25

th July it was off to Lloyd Jones Weir, a Free Camping Area 15klms SW of Barcaldine. When I arrived

just after lunch, it seemed very crowded, but I did find quite a good spot to set-up in. A wonder about this morning, to case the place out, the River is not flowing, so the Weir is fairly low. I’ll be here for 10 to 12 days before moving onto Winton. So until next month. Trikertom, gone Walkabout.
