T73 & T74 NON-REVERSIBLE PLANETARY GEAR FAST CONNECT HELMSThe importance of a non-reversable steering system for increased safety. The steering system of a boat is the mechanism that determines the boat direction when the steering wheel is turned. If, for any reason, the driver does not hold the wheel, a situation of danger may occur caused by a sudden change of direction of the boat due to external forces (waves, current, etc) or internal forces such as the rotation of the outboard or stern drive engine originated by the way of rotation of the propeller. Engine torque usually generates a load on the steering system that must be continually compensated for by the driver even when the boat is going straight. The additional effort by the driver to maintain a true course can often cause fatigue. With Ultraflex non-reversable steering helms the load applied to the steering system is no longer a problem. A special patented devise allows the helm shaft to lock until turned by the driver, maintaining the boat direction & neutralizing the feedback loads on the steering cable. This mechanism is engaged when the driver is not turning the wheel & is automatically disengaged as soon as the driver applies pressure on the wheel to change direction of the boat. The Ultraflex Non-Reversible mechanism designed for mechanical steering systems makes driving a boat safer & easier.

ADVANTAGES OF PLANETARY DESIGN REFERS TO HELMSThe benefits of this special design are increased system longevity, increased efficiency and less engine feedback compared to single pinion gear helms. Ultraflex mechanical steering helms T71FC, T73NRFC (Non-Reversible) and T81FC (Tilting) helms use Planetary Gear Design. A Planetary Gear Design has three satellite gears that rotate on their axis. This allows for equal distribution of engine torque over three points of the central gear, dividing and balancing the system loads and engine torque.

These helms operate with 3.8 turns lock to lock & a stroke of 228mm. Their outstanding features are the no feedback design that incorporates a patented non-reversible mechanism, which eliminates continuous load on the operator caused by propeller torque. These helms are suitable for larger outboards & sports boats. They use the M66 Ultraflex cable or a Seastar SSC62 style cable. There are two mounting options available, a 90° & a 20° bezel kit to allow for angled & vertical dashboards.

Power ETM is a system which can be used with all the data communication standards of the new engines equipped with electronic control unit. It is in compliance with the Euro 4 regulations, (SAE J 1939, NMEA2000) and it can control the engine with the common electric signals in voltage, current, PWM or frequency.The actuator can control shifts equipped with solenoid for ON/OFF or proportional valves and it is already prearranged forthe Troll solenoid valve.It is possible to select the running according to RINA directives through the configuration software.The data transmission between the control stations and the actuators takes place in digital format. As already said the system is also prearranged for the digital communication between actuators and engines.

Power E is an electronic control system with digital data transmission based on CAN Bus that allows the operator to control both electronic engine and electro-hydraulic (with solenoid) shift with a single control lever. The system allows a smooth and precise control and it gives an instant engine response for any maneuver and in any seaconditions.The system is designed for single or twin engine boats up to 164ft (50m) using one actuator and a single lever for each engine. The system is provided with a lever with the double function of throttle-shift and an electronic actuator.Up to 7 control stations with single or twin engines can be installed. The pre-assembled electric cables and the configuration software guarantee fast and easy installation. An audible and visual diagnostic system on board shows any system failure in an easy and quick way.It is possible to synchronize automatically the RPM of the two engines to reduce their consumption and their noise and to guarantee a better navigation comfort. The Docking function allows reducing the maximum RPM of the engines, while the High Idle function allows increasing the minimum value. The engine warm-up function and the Trolling-valve prear-rangement (supplied) are also available.

ENGINE CONTROL CABLESHow to measure for Control Cable Installation: For new installation, measure A & B distance from the control along an unobstructed cable routing to clutch and/or throttle connection. Round this dimension off to the next whole foot: you will have your cable length. We recommend that the cable bends have a maximum radius of about 200mm. For outboard engine installations, it is necessary to add three feet to the obtained length, in order to allow for the engine movement. To determine the required length of the REPLACEMENT CABLE, measure from tip to tip. When ordering, specify the cable length in feet, rounding the dimension off to the whole value. If any kit is required to complete cable connection, consult accessories section.

HYDRAULIC STEERING SYSTEMS NAUTECHAll the components of Nautech hydraulic steering systems are made specifically for the marine environment, using materials and working process which offer long life and safety for the most extreme conditions.HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS Under normal operating conditions, a turn of the steering wheel will send the oil from the helm into one of the two connecting hydraulic lines.The oil will be pumped into one of the chambers and either extend or retract the cylinder rod, depending on the steering wheel rotation. The fluid going out from the other chamber of the cylinder is returned to the helm via the other hydraulic line.There are only two basic components for all the Hydraflex steering systems. These are the helm unit and the cylinder, connected by flexible nylon hose.The helm unit consists of both a hydraulic pump and a valve assembly. The valve assembly prevents outgoing fluid from returning along the same line, isolates each steering station, locks the rudder and eliminates rudder “feedback” to the helm. The cylinders are double acting and may be balanced or unbalanced, (in which case the rod extends through only one end of the cylinder).

The DRAKE is the new born cylinder specially made for outboard engines. It is a front mount outboard cylinder that features a special bye pass valve system that allows an easy & fast alignment of 2 engines.This special patented device is very easy & fast to use. Once installed if the engine is not aligned, SIMPLY open the valve located on the side of the cylinder, NOW the two chambers inside are connected together and you can move the rod and centre the engine without disconnecting the link arm & hose fittings.

It consists of a pair of high pressure flexible hoses (4.9ft) and all necassary fittings for installation.

The Ultraflex Hydraulic Tie Bar is designed to hydraulically link two steering cylinders together. This is accomplished by “locking” fluid between both steering cylinders thereby maintaining the appropriate alignment of the rudders or outboard engines. The valve is manufactured to operate in two positions, :Open” & “Closed”. The “Open position allows fluid flow in multiple directions, thereby allowing the cylinders to move independently. When the valve is in the “Closed” position the fluid is “Locked” between the two steering cylinders. The hydraulic steering system on a vessel can build high fluid pressures during operation. With time and use it may be necessary to readjust the alignment of the rudders and/or outboard engines. This adjustment is to ONLY be performed while the vessel is stationary and the engines are not running.

This product was designed for hydraulic steering applications where a mechanical tie bar is not possible and where the engines are sufficiently apart from each other so that the rudders or outboard engines could not make contact with each other in the event the steering cylinders become misaligned.

When mounting the hydraulic tie bar in the vessel, please locate an area that can be accessible for steering realignment. It is recommended that the location be free and clear from objects that could interfere with the valve while operating the Vessel.

“DRAKE” DUAL CYLINDER INSTALLATION Step 1 ( Fig A ) Screw up the threaded end of the filling pipe in the threaded hole of the pump. Open the oil bottle holding it upright then screw the filling pipe up. Rotate the bottle and make a hole in the upper part (see Fig A ). Fill the pump with oil (oil must always be visible in the filling pipe). Use another bottle of oil every time the level in the filling pipe decreases. Continue to step 2 when the pump is full of oil. Step 2 ( Fig B ) Rotate the wheel clockwise bringing the cylinder rod of cylinder 1 to default stop leftwards. Open by-pass 1 and manually pull the cylinder rod 1 to default stop rightwards; then close by-pass 1 and open the bleeder vent of the indicated connection. Rotate the wheel clockwise until only oil without air comes out from the bleeder vent. Close the bleeder vent and rotate the wheel clockwise until it locks (the rod of the cylinder 1 to default stop leftwards). Step 3 ( Fig C ) Open by-pass 2. Manually pull the rod of cylinder 2 to default stop leftwards. Close by-pass 2 and open the bleeder vent. Rotate the anti-clockwise until only oil without air comes out. Close the bleeder vent of the connection. Step 4 ( Fig D ) Open the bleeder vent of cylinder 1. Rotate the wheel anti-clockwise until the locking, bringing the rod of the cylinder 2 to default stop rightwards. Open by-pass 2 and rotate the wheel anti-clockwise until oil without air comes out of the bleeder vent. Close by-pass 2 and open by-pass 1. Rotate the wheel clockwise until oil without air comes out of the vent. Close by-pass 1 and the bleeder vent.

Warning! Connect piping between cylinders and the pump in series (as indicated).

DUAL ENGINE ALIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1 (Fig E) After the adjustment of the drive section as shown in Fig 2 above, open by-pass 2 and rotate the wheel clockwise until it locks (cylinder 1 to default stop leftwards). Close by-pass 2 and open by-pass 1. Rotate the wheel clockwise until it locks (cylinder 2 to default stop leftwards). Close by-pass 1.

Step 2 (Fig F) Check the parallelism between the engines and in case of possible further adjustments execute them rotating manually the engines themselves opening, at first, the corresponding by-pass valve.

Warning! After alignment of the engine is completed tighten the by-pass valve to a torque specification of 10Nm.Connect if provided, the mechanical tie bar. In case its installation is not possible, it is necessary to check and/or perform periodical engine alignment.

Situated on the side of the cylinder for convenience, there is no extra cost of an alignment valve.
