Our local Perth Women’s team, Kaos, made WA Ultimate history this year as they became the first WA based women’s team to make the grand final of the 2014 Australian Ultimate Championships. With Head Coach John Damiani back in the lead job again and an amazing support team behind him including fitness guru Casey Meakins and Nicki Colls appointed a supporting role of Assistant Coach, the playing and non-playing leadership group was formed and a strong AUC 2014 campaign was on the cards. Back in November the Club hosted a women’s league and had over 40 females sign up. A great pool for talent identification purposes as well as a heap of local Perth players to assist them with scratch matches. Whilst there are currently no other Perth based women’s teams to consistently scrimmage against, as part of their season preparation the Kaos girls entered as a team in the Autumn Swarm tournament for some awesome competition practice testing themselves against some solid mixed gender teams. Intensive fitness and skills sessions, training up to 3 times a week as a unit plus their individual league commitments, the Kaos girls’ hard work paid off in their campaign to the national championships. The previous best result for Kaos was 4th in 2012 and this year they were able to push through to the final round with an amazing semi final performance to secure a place in the 2014 Grand Final. In an epic game against one our country’s best women’ team Sporting Team Box Athletico United (Victoria) Kaos put on a fantastic display of quality, ferocious, skilled Ultimate in front of a huge crowd. With the Sublime team supporting vocally on the sideline they fought for every disc. Quality handling on display from Sarah Brereton, Louise Delane and Geri Viros, massive pulls, huge defensive and offensive plays from Rebecca Brereton and tireless long cuts from Rachel Deluca- Cardillo and Casey Meakins were just a few highlights as the girls put on an awesome game right to the very end. Without a doubt it was a complete team effort, every team member played their best throughout the tournament and it was clear, Kaos deserved to be in this year’s final. Kaos win Silver at AUC 2014! The Perth Rise Up women’s clinic participants with

guest coach: Alex Snyder

On Saturday February 15th, 33 women attended the WA leg of the RISE UP Australian Tour focusing on women’s development.

Ultimate clinics were run at John XXIII College, which focused on skills such as planning your throw, planning your cut, using fakes to clear the break side, throwing into space, defensive footwork and positioning, cutting into space laterally, dumping and velocity throwing & catching. Afterwards the group cooled down at City Beach. With thanks to Ultimate Australia and Rise Up Ultimate a nationwide series of skills clinics were run in February featuring elite player Alex Snyder (FURY, USA World Games).

Perth was lucky enough to host Alex for the weekend and along with the day clinic also ran a club specific session with Kaos and a Coach Development session with local Perth coaches.

The intense coaching afternoon included coaches discussing coaching techniques such as developing team culture, goal setting, player development, developing drills and drill progressions, game strategies and focused scrimmages.

All who were in attendance across the Rise Up weekend gained a wealth of knowledge in excitement to implement everything they had learnt into their Ultimate pathways.

A special thank you to Sarah Brereton who not only assisted in organisation of the coaching clinic, but also for billeting Alex during her stay and showing her around Perth and preparing the lunches and snacks.

A BIG thank you from the WA Ultimate community to Ultimate Australia and Rise Up Ultimate for coordinating the program and of course to Alex Snyder for not only being an excellent coach but also a wonderful ambassador for women’s Ultimate.

In February the WA Flying Disc Association Executive Committee took time to acknowledge the hard working efforts of one of our key volunteers; Sarah Brereton. Sarah Brereton, locally know a “B” has hugely contributed to the Ultimate community in WA. Sarah volunteers on the WAFDA committee in the role of Director of Development, and is also the captain of the Perth-based women’s team; Kaos. She was a key organiser for the hugely successful women’s League at the end of 2013, as well as hosting our guest coach Alex Snyder and arranging the catering for the “Rise Up Ultimate” project camp in February.Sarah is a pleasure to deal with and her enthusiasm for the sport is contagious among all those who speak with her.
