The Ulrich OllendOrff, Md lecTUreship in the Department of Ophthalmology at Columbia University was established in 1997, the year before Dr. Ollendorff ’s death, to honor his long and renowned career as an eye doctor in Washington Heights. The annual lectureship was endowed by a gift from the Ollendorff Family to commemorate Dr. Ollendorff in fufillment of the wishes of his son, Stephen and his daughter-in-law, Bjorg. Dr. Ollendorff was a German refugee who came to the United States in 1939. Born in Breslau in 1906, Ulrich Ollendorff graduated from medical school at the top of his class and became a professor of ophthalmology in Breslau. When the Nazi regime forced him to leave academia, Dr. Ollendorff, with his wife, Anne, and their young son, Stephen, fled from Germany. Once he re-established his professional credentials in the United States, Dr. Ollendorff opened an Ophthalmology practice in Washington Heights that became legendary for its quality of care. He also held admitting privileges at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and at Wadsworth Hospital, where he performed eye surgery several times a week. At the time, Jewish doctors did not practice at Columbia-Presbyterian. A modest man, Ulrich Ollendorff was pleased to accept an apple pie in lieu of his fee and had to climb many flights of stairs to make house calls, all for six dollars a visit! By the time he retired in 1986, at the age of 80, Dr. Ollendorff had treated more than 300,000 grateful patients. Stephen Ollendorff recalls that everyone in Washington Heights knew his father saying, “He generated enormous respect within his community.” The Ulrich Ollendorff, MD Lectureship will not only benefit students and practitioners, but is also a fitting tribute to a man who devoted his life to promoting excellence in ophthalmologic care.
