Description of group

Translated from Afrikaans: “South African Railway history: We love our South African trains - the old big, heavy, black steam trains that criss-crossed our country. We also love the others: Diesel and electric locomotives! We also love models of South African trains. Modelling is also a form of conservation!”

And then in English:

We love South African Railways and our model trains. This is a mode of preservation!

Suid-Afrikaanse Spoorweg-geskiedenis. In Engels:

We love South African Railways and our model trains. This is a mode of preservation!

Congratulations to the members of the group - we now have 1,200 members.

added: “books! "

Thank you to all who share their nice photographs and stories with us.

Remember: Col André Kritzinger (SAAF- Ret) who also publishes good data regarding each type of South African locomotive. Look under "Wikipedia".

Remember we publish a monthly electronic magazine, called Uloliwe, about the railways.

We will never again experience the old steam raced that raced over our South African plains ... Those times are well done! Today, everybody is mainly interested in money - everything is expensive - time is money - and everyone is in a hurry!

There is no time to be grand or elegant on the train anymore! No, everyone wants to be in Durban within 45 minutes (from Jhb). We all travelled in our suits (or uniform) on the train. Today guys travel in sandals and shorts on an airplane.

For me of holiday starts the moment I am comfortable in my compartment on my way to my destination!

Come read and enjoy!

The more I love TRAINS ....... en het ek bygevoeg & “Books!"

Daardie tye is goed verby!

Vir my begin die vakansie of reis die oomblik wanneer ek gerieflik in my kompartement is!

Kom lees en geniet!

NEWSPAPER REPORT ON CLASS ACTION

DATE: 9TH January 2014

Page 9: Uloliwe vol 5 no 2

9

TPAG greetings to all Transnet pensioners at the start of this New Year and

hopefully it will be a fruitful year in terms of our court action and that you will be kept

in good health to benefit from the fruits of the successful court action. As indicated at

the end of last year we are awaiting the decision of the High Court judge to allow the

case against Transnet to be a “class action” and we are confident that this decision

will be soon and in our favour.

Attached for your information is an article appearing in the Natal Mercury this

morning highlighting our case and the dire financial predicament that the Transnet

pensioners of both funds find themselves in. This is a positive step as it highlights to

the public by an independent person the situation as it stands and the lack of action

on behalf of the Minister to rectify the wrongs of the past. It is ironic from the article

that above inflation increases in pensions had been agreed to in principal TWO

YEARS ago yet nothing has transpired which is despicable treatment to those who

mostly served a lifetime working for the company. The only real reason for the delay

is that it will hurt Transnet’s bottom line as they will have to cough up to meet what

we should be getting and this is not what they want to do. A ring fenced pension fund

as is both the TSDBF and the TPF only depending on investment income

with NO financial input from Transnet cannot afford bigger increases and thus the

Minister does not want to sign the agreement as Transnet will have to foot the

shortfall.

Hi guys.

Not too much.

Sheltam's 31 returning from Saaiplaas 4 shaft with a load of waste rock headed to

glory hole tips.

Harmony Surface Rail returning from the exchange yard with RRL at the show

grounds.

Whites, the Welgeleë pick-up waiting for the section to clear, I missed a container

train near Virginia.

Once again HSR, this time heading to Steyn 4 shaft, the exchange yard with

Sheltam.

Heard yesterday that an Orkney bound mielie-train derailed between

Page 10: Uloliwe vol 5 no 2

10

Vierfontein and Orkney. Of the 13 trucks 10 went to the ground. Porcupines

dug holes beneath the sleepers and caused the derailment??Cheers. J & J.

Hi guys.

Got Sheltam's 31 at the ore tips at Central Plant in Harmony off-loading ore

from old Saaiplaas 4 shaft's waste rock dump.

Then just before Hennenman 2x 6E's came past with a short Kroonstad bound

load, also in the consist was 34 and 36 class, probably from Bloemfontein

workshops.

Then at Welkom station - this just goes to show that ANYTHING can and will

be stolen nowadays!! This parachute tank will soon disappear...

The 36 classes are shunting at Hamilton industrial sidings in Bloemfontein.

Then the old coaches are near the workshops, there is still a clerestory

passenger van staged here.

The container train is Southbound near Karee and what's left of Karee

station... The back halve of a fire iron is still lying on the platform.

Found this small tortoise wandering along the ballast and removed him from

trackside to a safer place among the line side trees.

Cheers.

J & J.

Hi guys. The 2x 34's are on a train from Wesselsbron, staged at Welkom, time up. RRL's 31 can be seen waiting to proceed to Odendaalsrus. Then, a new arrival at RRL. Here she is running around her train at Niemandsland before proceeding to the exchange yards at the show grounds. Also at the Jan Hofmeyer road crossing. This is also where our last parachute tank still stands, don't know for how long?? Cheers. J & J.

• 20140129

Hi guys.

The 34 is just before Bultfontein - on its way to shunt the silos.

There is a total occupation between Drie Ruiters and Boskuil, from 0700 -

1600 on some days and this will last some time. It seems a goods truck

derailed somewhere in a consist and the driver only found out several

kilometres down the line. There are THOUSANDS of sleepers that need

replacement... A temporary speed restriction of 15 Km/h is enforced over

this section.

The 35 class is at Makwassie with a train load of more sleepers for

replacement. On the left are the coal wagons that derailed some time ago at

Boskuil, still waiting to be cut up.

The shot of the old station is at Makwassie.

Lastly the 16DA at Theunissen - now with both number plates, they look like

recasts.

Cheers.

• 20140130

Hi guys.

Due to the rain the total occupation between Makwassie and Boskuil was

suspended for today.

At Eersteling the south bound signals were set for the loop, so a crossing

was planned. The first train to arrive was a northbound load of Lime behind

3x 18E's. Then a southbound load of ore wagons sped past behind 4x 10E's.

This 10E hauled train stayed with us all the way to Bloemhof but the photo

opportunities were non-existent...

The train load of sleepers is at Makwassie, this is for the derailment

damage, also can be seen some of the old sleepers that have been recovered.

Just south of Makwassie a 6E hauled load of coal trucks headed north.

At Boskuil the sleeper replacement machine was busy; these photos are from

the vehicle as it is unsafe to wander around while the guys are working.

Just ahead of the Ballast Tamping Machine the ore empties can be seen

creeping along at 15Km/h.

The two light units are waiting for the empties to cross at Drie Ruiters.

A northbound load of mielies at Kingswood, also some accident damaged rail

bolster trucks - these might be the two culprits that caused all the damage

further up the line as most of their brake-gear parts are lying on top of

the trucks??

Another north bound load of empties just north of Bloemhof.

The Lennings Rail maintenance train is staged at Bloemhof, here the 10E

hauled train went past at an incredible lick.

Hoots and greetings from all the crews. Cheers. J & J.

RAILWAY PEOPLE / SPOORWEGMENSE

• Oom Jan Archer: Tish Archer & Fanjan Coetzee

So skrywe sy dogter Laetitia (Tish) Archer oor Oom Jan Archer as mens: Ek gaan hierdie artikel oor my pa begin by die beginRR.en einde: Jacobus A. A. Archer, gebore op Kalkwerf in Namakwaland op 3 Augustus 1923 en

oorlede 1 Junie 2006.

Page 24: Uloliwe vol 5 no 2

24

My pa was 33 jaar oud toe ek gebore is. My pa en ma het my altyd Meid of Meidjie genoem, maar ek het geweet ek was in die moeilikheid as my pa my op my doopnaam aangespreek het. Hy was ook baie spesifiek oor hoe my naam uitgespreek moet word. My pa was n baie ernstige man en ook een van min woorde. My ouers se eerste motor was ‘n Mercedes Benz en die moes in die motorhuis staan totdat my ma, Suzie (was my pa se naam vir my ma), haar bestuurslisensie gekry het.

Page 25: Uloliwe vol 5 no 2

25

Page 26: Uloliwe vol 5 no 2

26

Page 27: Uloliwe vol 5 no 2

27

Page 28: Uloliwe vol 5 no 2

28

Die rede was eenvoudig.

Page 29: Uloliwe vol 5 no 2

29

Ek is as senior drywersassistent verplaas Durban toe.

Page 30: Uloliwe vol 5 no 2

30

Mnr Park het geglo aan: "We must advertise".

Page 31: Uloliwe vol 5 no 2

31

Page 32: Uloliwe vol 5 no 2

32

Oom Jan Archer.

Kap 1 is nou n toilet

skakelaars is foutief asook baie ander toerusting soos bv.

lynspanning laag is. Jy kan kies hoeveel jy in series hold wil he in jou stel. As jy niks

in gesit.

Page 45: Uloliwe vol 5 no 2

45

n baie nice loko wees”.

• E18001

• Lys van 18E No’s

Koedoespoort af verkry is.)”

nie want dieselfde 6E1 nommers is reeds gelys by ander 18E nommers. Nou, om die

regte nommers te probeer ontsyfer by dié op my lys wat nog vraagtekens het, plus

nog 'n paar...

Page 46: Uloliwe vol 5 no 2

46

Verder klop alles mooi.

Sal laat weet as die Wikipedia-lyste reg is. Gaan nou eers my Chessie System bietjie

laat loop tot my kop ophou klop...

Hennie Heymans Danie Heymans - jy maak my skoon jaloers met daai blik!

Mag ek 'n storie oor so 'n blik vertel?

By die moorsd aangekom 'n jong dame vir my 'n vreeslike verhaal vertel.

Haar ouers was uithuisig.

Loseerder No 2 was 'n man van die voetplaat.

Reël No 1 in die SAP mbt misdaadtonele is: BESKERM DIE TONEEL. "Konstabel kan ek my blik vat?" So leer mens elke dag.

Hi guys. Have a look at this documentary Have a look at this documentary –

80

Page 81: Uloliwe vol 5 no 2

81

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vO02871_pMo This will give you an idea of what’s happening to our railways in Southern Africa, Transnet included. What struck me was that they don’t have Walkie –talkies to shunt with! And they also use RTW radio track warrants, you’ll see when he visits the train control officers – the diagram is exactly what we use here, there is even a Spoornet diagram on the wall!! The worrying bit is that the drivers can’t be reached on radioR Now this is essential for radio train operating!! Let me give you an example: Let’s say I want to depart from Welkom to Whites with a train. I’ll get Kroonstad RTO over the radio. “Kroonstad this is driver Jacque Wepener on train no. 4571. Permission to proceed from Welkom to Whites.” “Driver Jacque – this is Train Control Officer Lourens van Dyk at Kroonstad. The date is 2014/01/17, the time is 16:30. Token number 546732 for train number 4571. Permission to proceed from Welkom to Whites Repeat. I’ll then repeat all this, once the TCO is satisfied he’ll say; “Correct – you may depart for Whites” – I’ll say thanks and say departing for Whites. He’ll then say thanks you may proceed. When I arrive at Whites I’ll repeat all this and say I have arrived at Whites. So how on earth they get away with no radios is amazingR Cheers.

Refrigreration Problems: No “Blue Lights”: J & J Wepener

Hi Hennie. Many anxious hours were often experienced when, the Station staff received a message, that a LA refrigerator truck in the shed or en-route. Was not showing it’s blue light. A LA truck without it’s tell tale blue flickering light meant “Problems”. With the light off, it was a warning of, the large diesel motor, the compressor or other freezing equipment having stopped or become out of service [OS]. Should the LA be in the shed at the station or in a private siding, the owner would be asked not to load, but keep his own delivery trucks refrigerator equipment running, until the LA had been repaired. If the LA was en-route this was an even bigger problem.

Page 82: Uloliwe vol 5 no 2

82

Station staff becoming aware of a LA equipment failure, phoned the necessary, technical staff, to come out at once to complete the necessary repairs. In many cases this involved a long distance by road to the station in question. As mentioned if the perishables had not yet been loaded, the sender kept the consignment cold in their own transport or refrigerators at their private siding. Once the LA was back in running order, the consignment would be loaded. In many cases goods trains were delayed, to enable the LA to be cleared immediately loading and the sealing of the truck were completed. In other cases trains were stopped, the LA attached for quick clearing. The LA with perishable traffic en-route was another matter. Should the technical staff be waiting the repair/s could start immediately, causing the minimum of delay. But it had to be considered that in many cases the entire train was express perishable traffic, this train could not be delayed. The faulty LA quickly shunted off, the train then departed. A bigger problem was if the faulty truck had to await the technical staff. Station staff would take very frequent and regular temperature readings and record these in the LA’s log book*. On arrival of the technical staff, repairs were carried out with all haste. Once the LA was ready to proceed, the first available train would be used to clear this LA truck. * Log book used in enquiry, should a claim be considered. Log book also had record of services and any other previous break downs. All station staff were on the lookout, when informed of LA trucks on a train. Operating staff especially, making the necessary notes in train registers or other trains working books. With the mass transport of all types of goods by road today, the use of LA trucks ceased and all have since been scrapped. No more blue flashing lights, quite a sight at night with a long load of LA trucks in tow. Gone also the teams of technical staff, waiting a call out at all hours day or night. The blue lights were mounted on the back of the diesel motor. Looked like a large two lens, truck mud guard indicator light, with two blue lenses. The Railways had above Blue lights. Plus Green, Purple, Red, White and Yellow, signal lamps/lights. Groete, John and Jacque.

A kit to build a toy car which has stayed in its original packaging for more than 80 years is expected to sell for more than a new, full-sized car. A red Meccano kit which dates from 1930 has been unearthed by auctioneers Bonhams, and will be put on sale later this month. The kit contains its original instructions, and is bundled in a wooden case with a more recent silver edition of the same kit.

Set: The classic red Meccano set, from 1930, is bundled with a silver version from 1995

Intricate: The red toy car, seen here inside its box, has never been unpackaged The ornate miniatures - touted for decades as 'the Perfect Miniature Motor Cars' - are powered by a wind-up clockwork motor. They go on sale as a bundle during Bonhams' two-day 'Gentleman's Library' sale taking place on 28-29 January in

Knightsbridge. The toys are stored in a brass-banded box, which holds both kits - which have never been assembled - in a 56cm x 44cm x 22.5cm space. The lot has been given a guide price of between £10,000 and £15,000. The older kit forms the Meccano number 2 model constructor clockwork motor car, famous for its vivid red body and light blue trim.

Instructions: This manual from 1930 shows how to construct the vehicle

Bundled: The 1930 red car is being offered at auction alongside this silver version from 1995 The silver model dates from 1995, and is branded with the maker's mark for Garrard and Co Ltd, London. A statement from Bonhams said: 'The inter-war years saw Meccano produce some of the finest quality mass-produced metal toys ever made in the UK. 'After 1920, its range expanded, with the successful Aeroplane and Motor Car Constructor sets appearing on the market in consecutive years. 'The motor car models consist of custom parts that allow a range of car variations, and are driven by powerful Clockwork Motors, fueling long, speedy runs on just one winding.'

• Krupp k5 Railway Mounted Gun: Trevor Alborough: NZ

Hennie, Recently Johannes Botha was wondering about the identity of a German Railway Gun. (Uloliwe Vol4, issue 9, p110). It looks similar to a Lima Model I brought in about 1980, and I have in a box with the catalog number "30 9319". Was Johannes' model repainted? There are some good articles with photos on the Internet about this gun at:

• http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krupp_K5 • http://www.militaryfactory.com/armor/detail.asp?armor_id=526 • http://samilitaryhistory.org/vol133lw.html

In summary: The gun was developed in the 1930s and saw service in WW2. Two

were captured after the Anzio beach landings (Anzio Annie and Anzio Express to

Allies or Leopold and Robert to the Axis forces) and shipped to the USA, and is now

at Fort Lee in Virginia.

Technical details of Krupp K5: Barrel Length: 21.5 Metres Caliber: 283mm Rifling: 12 x 7mm deep grooves Shell: 255Kg Number produced: 25

Aiming was achieved either by using a curved piece of track, of constructing a

"Vögele Turntable" in front of it such the the forward bogies were perpendicular to

the main track.

I've attached some photos of my model:

Tjeers

Hello Hennie and Jacque,

First - Jacque - thanks for providing the link to the latest issue.

Your list of "Railway Speak" was very interesting but it needs some comment.

1. The "Balstamper" was a nick-name attached to the class 5E - NOT the 3E. The 5E

had "Henricot" bogies which gave a very firm ride to the crew - hence the name

"Balstamper".

2. Electric locomotives in SAR days always placed the class number first - then the

Page 98: Uloliwe vol 5 no 2

98

"E". In other words - units were referred to as class 4E, class 1E etc, - not E4 or E1.

3. "Pendrol" rail fastenings should read "Pandrol".

4. The spelling of the loco valve gear is "Walschaerts".

5. The older suburban coaches on the SAR were known as "Side-Door" coaches -

not "Slam Door" which was a British term.

6. The tenders on the last order for 19D’s, 24’s and S2’s were known in SAR loco

depots as "Torpedo" tenders. The name "Van der Bilt was an American term.

7. The "Windhond" was a term attached to the class 16E.

• Hennie:

On page 52 - the loco depicted is a class S2 - not an S1.

The comment above is offered in a friendly spirit!

Again a very interesting issue - thanks!

Cheers

• Sorry Sir - Hennie

• Long Toms: Trevor Alborough

• Louis Changuion: "Silence of the guns"

Hennie,

In the Jan 2014 edition of Uloliwe you show some photos of Long Tom guns. If

anyone is interested in reading about the history of these guns an excellent book on

the subject is Louis Changuion's "Silence of the guns" (Protea Book House). It is

unlikely that these guns ever passed through Durban as that would have been

hostile territory even before the war.

It is also interesting to note the role the railway workshops played in the war effort.

When one of the guns had been damaged by the British it was returned to Pretoria

where the muzzle was shortened at the railways workshops - which reduced its

range by about 1600 meters. It still had an effective range of about 8200 meters!

After its "circumcision" it was nicknamed "the Jew" and continued in service.

The Long Toms also had an issue with detonators not working as expected. It would

seem that only after the state of the war were shells regularly fired at maximum

range. The forces involved in such firing meant the detonators often over tighten and

Page 99: Uloliwe vol 5 no 2

99

shear off. Once again the railways workshops came to the rescue when they

diagnosed the issue and came up with a solution: machine off the last threads on the

detonator so once screwed down it could "free-wheel" instead of over tightening and

shearing off.

Good News. My two earlier titles on “The Steel Kyalami” have been re-issued in a second edition. (Pictures of the covers are attached for your information.) Not only that, but as well as (of course) being available in the very large landscape format 33cm x 28cm size (which are unavoidably expensive), they are, following a significant number of requests, also now available in standard landscape size (25cm x 20cm). Priced at $55 (softback) and $65 (hardback + dust jacket) for Volume 1 (160 pages). Volume 2 is a little more as it runs to 178 pages. (Courier charges and taxes (if applicable) have to be added, of course). This is excellent value for print on demand books, for which BLURB are the world leaders. The covers are the same for both sizes of the books so make sure you select the correct version in the bookstore.. If you remember Kimberley – De Aar steam and those magnificent 4-8-4s (although plenty of other classes are also covered) then these books are for you. Can you remember those volcanic starts from Orange River Station on a freezing, clear winter’s morning as a pair of 25NCs gets to grips with their heavy train? If you can , then these books are for you. If you can’t, but want to see what you missed and see

Page 102: Uloliwe vol 5 no 2

why South Africa was such a magnet to steam enthusiasts during those times then these books are for you also! Due to space constraints on the server I can only make these standard landscape versions of the two Kimberley – De Aar books available for a very limited period, probably no more than two weeks, so please don’t delay, if you are interested. Courier delivery for a single book is a little pricey, so if you intend buying both

volumes , please do so on one order, as the additional courier costs are negligible.

Better still, please have a look at the 14 other titles of mine in the bookstore. (Some

e-books, at a very nominal price, are also available) Maybe consider acquiring

all the titles you have an interest in into one order, or combine an order with

those of your like minded friends. FULL DETAILS OF ALL MY BOOKS ARE AVAILABLE, and the info, full previews, and ordering processes are very simple: Simply go to www.blurb.com and enter Dennis Moore steam in the search engine, and take it from there. ARE YOU A FAN OF S.A.R. Separate standard landscape size books (more affordable) on the three lines marked * will be published during March this year. For the narrow gauge aficionado, a huge book, covering all of the South African Railways narrow gauge lines will also be issued, covering all of the content of the 3 ‘individual’ books, but much more besides, not least the often overlooked Weenen and Mid Illovo lines. This “combined” volume will be the most lavish pictorial tribute to these powerful locos ever produced. R. It will be available in both standard and very large landscape page sizes. If you want to receive a personal notification when these narrow gauge books are published, please e-mail me, and tell your friends!

As always, I do not want to annoy anyone. If you want your name removed from my

Busted: A California man was arrested

after he was found riding an Amtrak train

with this cast filled with a kilo of cocaine

Federal agents busted a man riding an

Amtrak train wearing a leg cast filled with

cocaine.

Daniel Ramirez, 21, of California, was

making the 41-hour journey to Chicago

when he was stopped Tuesday by Drug

Enforcement Agency officers for

questioning during a routine stop in New

Mexico, according to court records.

Subsequent search led to the discovery

of one kilo of cocaine sealed in five

separate packages stuffed inside a

poorly constructed cast wrapped around

his right leg, the documents originally

posted to the Smoking Gun revealed.

DEA agents from the Albuquerque field office began questioning the man after they

noticed the cast was ' uneven in texture, size and shaping not consistent with that of

a cast applied by a medical professional,’ they wrote in their report.

Mr Ramirez told agents he was visiting a friend in Chicago, but became ‘increasingly

nervous’ to the point ‘his hands were shaking’ under continued prodding.

He was asked to remove a sock, this caused the cast to ‘began to crumble and fall

off the bottom of his foot,’ authorities said. Looking inside the cast revealed plastic

packages.

The agents obtained a search warrant, cracked the cast open and found five heat-

sealed bags packed with about a kilo of cocaine, which retails for about $25,000 on

the street, the Smoking Gun noted.

Agents cuffed Mr Ramirez and walked him off the train to face felony narcotics

charges, but not before another passenger told them he was walking around the

train without crutches while wearing the cast.

By JENNIFER SMITH PUBLISHED: 18:32 GMT, 15 January 2014 | UPDATED: 18:38 GMT, 15 January 2014 Forward-thinking engineers in China are the first in the country to have built a section of an enormous overpass and rotate it into place upon completion so as not to disturb the railways below. A 17,000 ton part of an elevated motorway was today slowly swung into place in Wuhan City after being constructed independently beside a high speed railway track.

A China Railway High-speed train passes beneath the rotating sector of the bridge

today as engineers expertly swivel it into place.

It was the first time the technique had been used in China, with engineers unable to temporarily halt the busy train service in order to build the bridge in place. Experts took 90 minutes to connect the section to the rest of the bridge, tuning it 106 degrees on a 15metre high axis. It was the first time the innovative technique had been used in China. The country has the world's longest high speed rail network with over 6,200 miles of routes in service in December 2012. The track beneath the bridge in Wuhan City was considered too important to be temporarily halted in order for engineers' to complete construction. Once finished, the overpass will be 256m long and span 11 railways, including the 1,428 mile-long Beijing-Guangzhou service.

Experts estimate the bridge will be open to traffic later this month.

Incredible pictures capture eerily deserted early morning London Underground BEFORE the commuters turn up Social media director James Whatley has spent six years compiling the collection of photos from across the capital Paddington, Baker Street, Piccadilly Circus and Waterloo are all caught at their least busy by the 34-year-old By WILLIAM TURVILL PUBLISHED: 11:18 GMT, 29 January 2014 | UPDATED: 14:15 GMT, 29 January 2014 These eerie photographs show the London Underground as few see it: empty. Social media director James Whatley, 34, has spent six years compiling the collection, which includes Paddington, Baker Street, Piccadilly Circus, Waterloo and many others at their least busy. ‘It was almost accidental if I’m perfectly honest,’ he says. ‘I’ve spent nearly six years capturing these moments and it was only after the first five that I realised I was making a hobby of it. After a while it became a challenge. Whenever I was in a new station, I found myself looking for the parts that might be empty.' He added: ‘I describe my project as “an absence of occupance” - it’s devoid of the very thing that it was built for. Our London Underground is a permanent timeline of

iconic design architecture, and you only really get to see it like that when it is empty.’

This photograph shows an empty Maida Vale station. Sitting on the Bakerloo Line, the station, to the north-west of Paddington, dates back nearly 100 years to 1915

A rare sight: This image, caught by James Whatley, shows Bank-Monument station, which is usually packed with City of London workers during the week

A Northern Line train approaches the platform at Angel. This station, just east of King's Cross St Pancras, is home to the system's longest escalator, which is 60m long

Queen's Park station, pictured in a deserted state here, was originally built on the main line between London and Birmingham. It has been on the Bakerloo Line since 1915 and was recently added to the London Overground

Mr Whatley, who has pictured London Bridge here, which is usually packed with commuters during weekday mornings and evenings, says: 'It's actually relatively easy to photograph the stations completely empty. The commuters of the London Underground move like waves; like tides the crowds come in and out'

Paddington station, seen here, connects to the Circle, District, Bakerloo and Hammersmith & City lines. It also used to be on the Metropolitan Railway and was part of the world's very first underground line, which ran between this station and Farringdon in 1863

Regent's Park, on the Bakerloo Line, is often teaming with tourists, often heading to London Zoo. Not here, as Mr Whatley managed to capture the station empty

Piccadilly Circus is another station caught by Mr Whatley in a sleepy state. 'An empty underground can occur at any point in the day, you just have to look out for it'

Holborn, on the Piccadilly and Central lines, is another station packed during commuting hours. Mr Whatley says: 'It's interesting seeing or hearing about different tastes, as some people prefer the platforms, and some people prefer the trains'

Left: Connected on five lines (the Metropolitan, Circle, Jubilee, Bakerloo and Hammersmith & City), Baker Street has ten platforms - more than any other Underground station.
