2016 ndash 2017 SCHOOL REGISTRATION School registration will be held on Saturday September 10th from 900 to 1100 am There will be no classes on the 10th ndash just registration At 1100 there will be a meeting of the staff to discuss the upcoming year Students 3 years of age and up are invited The cost is $22000 per year per child or $38000 for two children Classes take place every Saturday (except statutoryreligious holidays) during the normal school year from 930 am to 1230 pm The school is located in the building next door to the church at 855 Barton St E Our classes are set up to provide students with an opportunity to learn conversational Ukrainian as well as become familiar with the culture and traditions of Ukraine ADULT CLASSES ndash Whether yoursquore starting with the українська абетка or brushing up on your ldquoKitchen Ukrainianrdquo our Adult Conversational Language class is a great place to start Students ranging from teens to parents have a fun time exploring the language and learning some Ukrainian culture and traditions Saturdays from 930 am to 1230 pm

Feast of the Nativity of Our Most Holy Lady
the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary ndash September 21
The icon of the Nativity of the Theotokos presents to us the central figures of Saints Joachim and Anna Marys parents and the Mother of our Lord as an infant Saint Anna is in the middle of the icon with her right hand extended toward her daughter Likewise Saint Joachim Marys father is gazing upon the young child with his right hand extended toward her
Anna is surrounded by attendants who have assisted with the birth The icon directs attention to Mary as the central figure in this feast It also acknowledges the joy that was felt by Joachim and Anna as new parents with a child received through a promise from God The liturgical texts of the feast acknowledge this joy and confirm the special role of Mary as the Mother of the Incarnate God Jesus Christ In this event another step is made in sacred history in preparation for the entrance of Christ into the world The icon and the feast also acknowledge a transition from barrenness to life This was but another foreshadowing of what would be offered through Christ the transformation from death to eternal life
In addition to the celebration of the Annunciation there are three major feasts in the Church honoring Mary the Theotokos The first of these is the feast of her nativity which is kept on the eighth of September The record of the birth of Mary is not found in the Bible The traditional account of the event is taken from the apocryphal writings which are not part of the New Testament scriptures The traditional teaching which is celebrated in the hymns and verses of the festal liturgy is that Joachim and Anna were a pious Jewish couple who were among the small and faithful remnant-ldquothe poor and the needyrdquo- who were awaiting the promised messiah The couple was old and childless They prayed earnestly to the Lord for a child since among the Jews barrenness was a sign of Godrsquos disfavor In answer to their prayers and as the reward of their unwavering fidelity to God the elderly couple was blessed with the child who was destined because of her own personal goodness and holiness to become the Mother of the Messiah-Christ
By your nativity O most pure virgin Joachim and Anna are freed from barrenness Adam and Eve from the corruption of death And we your people freed from the guilt of sin celebrate and sing to you The
barren woman gives birth to the Theotokos the Nourisher of our Life (Kontakion) Even if the actual background of the event as celebrated in the Church is questionable from an historical point of view the divine meaning of it ldquofor us and for our salvationrdquo is obvious There had to be one born of human flesh and blood who would be spiritually capable of being the Mother of Christ and she herself had to be born into the world of persons who were spiritually capable of being her parents The feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos therefore is a glorification of Maryrsquos birth of Mary herself and of her righteous parents It is a celebration as well of the very first preparation of the salvation of the world For the ldquoVessel of Lightrdquo the ldquoBook of the Word of Liferdquo the ldquoDoor to the Orientrdquo the ldquoThrone of Wisdomrdquo is being prepared on earth by God himself in the birth of the holy girl-child Mary The verses of the feast are filled with titles for Mary such as those in the quotations above They are inspired by the message of the Bible both the Old and New Testaments The specific Biblical readings of the feast give indications of this The Gospel reading of Matins is the one read at all feasts of the Theotokos the famous Magnificat from St Luke in which Mary says ldquoMy soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden for behold henceforth all generations will call me blessedrdquo(Luke 147) httpocaorgorthodoxythe-orthodox-faithworshipthechurch- yearnativity-of-the-theotokos

Feast of the Nativity of Our Most Holy Lady
the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary ndash September 21
The icon of the Nativity of the Theotokos presents to us the central figures of Saints Joachim and Anna Marys parents and the Mother of our Lord as an infant Saint Anna is in the middle of the icon with her right hand extended toward her daughter Likewise Saint Joachim Marys father is gazing upon the young child with his right hand extended toward her
Anna is surrounded by attendants who have assisted with the birth The icon directs attention to Mary as the central figure in this feast It also acknowledges the joy that was felt by Joachim and Anna as new parents with a child received through a promise from God The liturgical texts of the feast acknowledge this joy and confirm the special role of Mary as the Mother of the Incarnate God Jesus Christ In this event another step is made in sacred history in preparation for the entrance of Christ into the world The icon and the feast also acknowledge a transition from barrenness to life This was but another foreshadowing of what would be offered through Christ the transformation from death to eternal life
In addition to the celebration of the Annunciation there are three major feasts in the Church honoring Mary the Theotokos The first of these is the feast of her nativity which is kept on the eighth of September The record of the birth of Mary is not found in the Bible The traditional account of the event is taken from the apocryphal writings which are not part of the New Testament scriptures The traditional teaching which is celebrated in the hymns and verses of the festal liturgy is that Joachim and Anna were a pious Jewish couple who were among the small and faithful remnant-ldquothe poor and the needyrdquo- who were awaiting the promised messiah The couple was old and childless They prayed earnestly to the Lord for a child since among the Jews barrenness was a sign of Godrsquos disfavor In answer to their prayers and as the reward of their unwavering fidelity to God the elderly couple was blessed with the child who was destined because of her own personal goodness and holiness to become the Mother of the Messiah-Christ
By your nativity O most pure virgin Joachim and Anna are freed from barrenness Adam and Eve from the corruption of death And we your people freed from the guilt of sin celebrate and sing to you The
barren woman gives birth to the Theotokos the Nourisher of our Life (Kontakion) Even if the actual background of the event as celebrated in the Church is questionable from an historical point of view the divine meaning of it ldquofor us and for our salvationrdquo is obvious There had to be one born of human flesh and blood who would be spiritually capable of being the Mother of Christ and she herself had to be born into the world of persons who were spiritually capable of being her parents The feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos therefore is a glorification of Maryrsquos birth of Mary herself and of her righteous parents It is a celebration as well of the very first preparation of the salvation of the world For the ldquoVessel of Lightrdquo the ldquoBook of the Word of Liferdquo the ldquoDoor to the Orientrdquo the ldquoThrone of Wisdomrdquo is being prepared on earth by God himself in the birth of the holy girl-child Mary The verses of the feast are filled with titles for Mary such as those in the quotations above They are inspired by the message of the Bible both the Old and New Testaments The specific Biblical readings of the feast give indications of this The Gospel reading of Matins is the one read at all feasts of the Theotokos the famous Magnificat from St Luke in which Mary says ldquoMy soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden for behold henceforth all generations will call me blessedrdquo(Luke 147) httpocaorgorthodoxythe-orthodox-faithworshipthechurch- yearnativity-of-the-theotokos

Feast of the Nativity of Our Most Holy Lady
the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary ndash September 21
The icon of the Nativity of the Theotokos presents to us the central figures of Saints Joachim and Anna Marys parents and the Mother of our Lord as an infant Saint Anna is in the middle of the icon with her right hand extended toward her daughter Likewise Saint Joachim Marys father is gazing upon the young child with his right hand extended toward her
Anna is surrounded by attendants who have assisted with the birth The icon directs attention to Mary as the central figure in this feast It also acknowledges the joy that was felt by Joachim and Anna as new parents with a child received through a promise from God The liturgical texts of the feast acknowledge this joy and confirm the special role of Mary as the Mother of the Incarnate God Jesus Christ In this event another step is made in sacred history in preparation for the entrance of Christ into the world The icon and the feast also acknowledge a transition from barrenness to life This was but another foreshadowing of what would be offered through Christ the transformation from death to eternal life
In addition to the celebration of the Annunciation there are three major feasts in the Church honoring Mary the Theotokos The first of these is the feast of her nativity which is kept on the eighth of September The record of the birth of Mary is not found in the Bible The traditional account of the event is taken from the apocryphal writings which are not part of the New Testament scriptures The traditional teaching which is celebrated in the hymns and verses of the festal liturgy is that Joachim and Anna were a pious Jewish couple who were among the small and faithful remnant-ldquothe poor and the needyrdquo- who were awaiting the promised messiah The couple was old and childless They prayed earnestly to the Lord for a child since among the Jews barrenness was a sign of Godrsquos disfavor In answer to their prayers and as the reward of their unwavering fidelity to God the elderly couple was blessed with the child who was destined because of her own personal goodness and holiness to become the Mother of the Messiah-Christ
By your nativity O most pure virgin Joachim and Anna are freed from barrenness Adam and Eve from the corruption of death And we your people freed from the guilt of sin celebrate and sing to you The
barren woman gives birth to the Theotokos the Nourisher of our Life (Kontakion) Even if the actual background of the event as celebrated in the Church is questionable from an historical point of view the divine meaning of it ldquofor us and for our salvationrdquo is obvious There had to be one born of human flesh and blood who would be spiritually capable of being the Mother of Christ and she herself had to be born into the world of persons who were spiritually capable of being her parents The feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos therefore is a glorification of Maryrsquos birth of Mary herself and of her righteous parents It is a celebration as well of the very first preparation of the salvation of the world For the ldquoVessel of Lightrdquo the ldquoBook of the Word of Liferdquo the ldquoDoor to the Orientrdquo the ldquoThrone of Wisdomrdquo is being prepared on earth by God himself in the birth of the holy girl-child Mary The verses of the feast are filled with titles for Mary such as those in the quotations above They are inspired by the message of the Bible both the Old and New Testaments The specific Biblical readings of the feast give indications of this The Gospel reading of Matins is the one read at all feasts of the Theotokos the famous Magnificat from St Luke in which Mary says ldquoMy soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden for behold henceforth all generations will call me blessedrdquo(Luke 147) httpocaorgorthodoxythe-orthodox-faithworshipthechurch- yearnativity-of-the-theotokos

Feast of the Nativity of Our Most Holy Lady
the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary ndash September 21
The icon of the Nativity of the Theotokos presents to us the central figures of Saints Joachim and Anna Marys parents and the Mother of our Lord as an infant Saint Anna is in the middle of the icon with her right hand extended toward her daughter Likewise Saint Joachim Marys father is gazing upon the young child with his right hand extended toward her
Anna is surrounded by attendants who have assisted with the birth The icon directs attention to Mary as the central figure in this feast It also acknowledges the joy that was felt by Joachim and Anna as new parents with a child received through a promise from God The liturgical texts of the feast acknowledge this joy and confirm the special role of Mary as the Mother of the Incarnate God Jesus Christ In this event another step is made in sacred history in preparation for the entrance of Christ into the world The icon and the feast also acknowledge a transition from barrenness to life This was but another foreshadowing of what would be offered through Christ the transformation from death to eternal life
In addition to the celebration of the Annunciation there are three major feasts in the Church honoring Mary the Theotokos The first of these is the feast of her nativity which is kept on the eighth of September The record of the birth of Mary is not found in the Bible The traditional account of the event is taken from the apocryphal writings which are not part of the New Testament scriptures The traditional teaching which is celebrated in the hymns and verses of the festal liturgy is that Joachim and Anna were a pious Jewish couple who were among the small and faithful remnant-ldquothe poor and the needyrdquo- who were awaiting the promised messiah The couple was old and childless They prayed earnestly to the Lord for a child since among the Jews barrenness was a sign of Godrsquos disfavor In answer to their prayers and as the reward of their unwavering fidelity to God the elderly couple was blessed with the child who was destined because of her own personal goodness and holiness to become the Mother of the Messiah-Christ
By your nativity O most pure virgin Joachim and Anna are freed from barrenness Adam and Eve from the corruption of death And we your people freed from the guilt of sin celebrate and sing to you The
barren woman gives birth to the Theotokos the Nourisher of our Life (Kontakion) Even if the actual background of the event as celebrated in the Church is questionable from an historical point of view the divine meaning of it ldquofor us and for our salvationrdquo is obvious There had to be one born of human flesh and blood who would be spiritually capable of being the Mother of Christ and she herself had to be born into the world of persons who were spiritually capable of being her parents The feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos therefore is a glorification of Maryrsquos birth of Mary herself and of her righteous parents It is a celebration as well of the very first preparation of the salvation of the world For the ldquoVessel of Lightrdquo the ldquoBook of the Word of Liferdquo the ldquoDoor to the Orientrdquo the ldquoThrone of Wisdomrdquo is being prepared on earth by God himself in the birth of the holy girl-child Mary The verses of the feast are filled with titles for Mary such as those in the quotations above They are inspired by the message of the Bible both the Old and New Testaments The specific Biblical readings of the feast give indications of this The Gospel reading of Matins is the one read at all feasts of the Theotokos the famous Magnificat from St Luke in which Mary says ldquoMy soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden for behold henceforth all generations will call me blessedrdquo(Luke 147) httpocaorgorthodoxythe-orthodox-faithworshipthechurch- yearnativity-of-the-theotokos

Feast of the Nativity of Our Most Holy Lady
the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary ndash September 21
The icon of the Nativity of the Theotokos presents to us the central figures of Saints Joachim and Anna Marys parents and the Mother of our Lord as an infant Saint Anna is in the middle of the icon with her right hand extended toward her daughter Likewise Saint Joachim Marys father is gazing upon the young child with his right hand extended toward her
Anna is surrounded by attendants who have assisted with the birth The icon directs attention to Mary as the central figure in this feast It also acknowledges the joy that was felt by Joachim and Anna as new parents with a child received through a promise from God The liturgical texts of the feast acknowledge this joy and confirm the special role of Mary as the Mother of the Incarnate God Jesus Christ In this event another step is made in sacred history in preparation for the entrance of Christ into the world The icon and the feast also acknowledge a transition from barrenness to life This was but another foreshadowing of what would be offered through Christ the transformation from death to eternal life
In addition to the celebration of the Annunciation there are three major feasts in the Church honoring Mary the Theotokos The first of these is the feast of her nativity which is kept on the eighth of September The record of the birth of Mary is not found in the Bible The traditional account of the event is taken from the apocryphal writings which are not part of the New Testament scriptures The traditional teaching which is celebrated in the hymns and verses of the festal liturgy is that Joachim and Anna were a pious Jewish couple who were among the small and faithful remnant-ldquothe poor and the needyrdquo- who were awaiting the promised messiah The couple was old and childless They prayed earnestly to the Lord for a child since among the Jews barrenness was a sign of Godrsquos disfavor In answer to their prayers and as the reward of their unwavering fidelity to God the elderly couple was blessed with the child who was destined because of her own personal goodness and holiness to become the Mother of the Messiah-Christ
By your nativity O most pure virgin Joachim and Anna are freed from barrenness Adam and Eve from the corruption of death And we your people freed from the guilt of sin celebrate and sing to you The
barren woman gives birth to the Theotokos the Nourisher of our Life (Kontakion) Even if the actual background of the event as celebrated in the Church is questionable from an historical point of view the divine meaning of it ldquofor us and for our salvationrdquo is obvious There had to be one born of human flesh and blood who would be spiritually capable of being the Mother of Christ and she herself had to be born into the world of persons who were spiritually capable of being her parents The feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos therefore is a glorification of Maryrsquos birth of Mary herself and of her righteous parents It is a celebration as well of the very first preparation of the salvation of the world For the ldquoVessel of Lightrdquo the ldquoBook of the Word of Liferdquo the ldquoDoor to the Orientrdquo the ldquoThrone of Wisdomrdquo is being prepared on earth by God himself in the birth of the holy girl-child Mary The verses of the feast are filled with titles for Mary such as those in the quotations above They are inspired by the message of the Bible both the Old and New Testaments The specific Biblical readings of the feast give indications of this The Gospel reading of Matins is the one read at all feasts of the Theotokos the famous Magnificat from St Luke in which Mary says ldquoMy soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden for behold henceforth all generations will call me blessedrdquo(Luke 147) httpocaorgorthodoxythe-orthodox-faithworshipthechurch- yearnativity-of-the-theotokos

Anna is surrounded by attendants who have assisted with the birth The icon directs attention to Mary as the central figure in this feast It also acknowledges the joy that was felt by Joachim and Anna as new parents with a child received through a promise from God The liturgical texts of the feast acknowledge this joy and confirm the special role of Mary as the Mother of the Incarnate God Jesus Christ In this event another step is made in sacred history in preparation for the entrance of Christ into the world The icon and the feast also acknowledge a transition from barrenness to life This was but another foreshadowing of what would be offered through Christ the transformation from death to eternal life
In addition to the celebration of the Annunciation there are three major feasts in the Church honoring Mary the Theotokos The first of these is the feast of her nativity which is kept on the eighth of September The record of the birth of Mary is not found in the Bible The traditional account of the event is taken from the apocryphal writings which are not part of the New Testament scriptures The traditional teaching which is celebrated in the hymns and verses of the festal liturgy is that Joachim and Anna were a pious Jewish couple who were among the small and faithful remnant-ldquothe poor and the needyrdquo- who were awaiting the promised messiah The couple was old and childless They prayed earnestly to the Lord for a child since among the Jews barrenness was a sign of Godrsquos disfavor In answer to their prayers and as the reward of their unwavering fidelity to God the elderly couple was blessed with the child who was destined because of her own personal goodness and holiness to become the Mother of the Messiah-Christ
By your nativity O most pure virgin Joachim and Anna are freed from barrenness Adam and Eve from the corruption of death And we your people freed from the guilt of sin celebrate and sing to you The
barren woman gives birth to the Theotokos the Nourisher of our Life (Kontakion) Even if the actual background of the event as celebrated in the Church is questionable from an historical point of view the divine meaning of it ldquofor us and for our salvationrdquo is obvious There had to be one born of human flesh and blood who would be spiritually capable of being the Mother of Christ and she herself had to be born into the world of persons who were spiritually capable of being her parents The feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos therefore is a glorification of Maryrsquos birth of Mary herself and of her righteous parents It is a celebration as well of the very first preparation of the salvation of the world For the ldquoVessel of Lightrdquo the ldquoBook of the Word of Liferdquo the ldquoDoor to the Orientrdquo the ldquoThrone of Wisdomrdquo is being prepared on earth by God himself in the birth of the holy girl-child Mary The verses of the feast are filled with titles for Mary such as those in the quotations above They are inspired by the message of the Bible both the Old and New Testaments The specific Biblical readings of the feast give indications of this The Gospel reading of Matins is the one read at all feasts of the Theotokos the famous Magnificat from St Luke in which Mary says ldquoMy soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden for behold henceforth all generations will call me blessedrdquo(Luke 147) httpocaorgorthodoxythe-orthodox-faithworshipthechurch- yearnativity-of-the-theotokos
