Ukrainian 1

Ukrainian belongs to the Slavic branch of the Indo-European language family. It has three, closely- related divisions:

• East Slavic: Ukrainian, Belarusian, Rusyn, Russian

• West Slavic: Czech, Slovak, Polish• South Slavic: Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian,

Macedonian, Bulgarian

These are related as well to the Baltic language family (Latvian and Lithuanian). They are less closely related to Germanic and other Indo-European languages.

Ukrainian is the mother tongue of more than 50 million people. It is spoken in Ukraine as the official language and is spoken as well in parts of Russia, Byelorus, Poland, and Slovakia. There are Ukrainian language publications in Russia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Canada, and the United States. There are three major dialects of Ukrainian—Northwest, Southwest, and East; they are mutually intelligible. This course teaches Standard Ukrainian, the official state language.

2

Ukrainian 1

Modern literary Ukrainian appeared on the world linguistic map at the end of the 18th century with the publication of the mock-epic poem Enjida, a Ukrainian version of the Aeneid. The use of Ukrainian as a written language was subsequently prohibited and the tsarist government of Russia did not encourage the development of Ukrainian as a separate language. Ukraine was referred to as “Little Russia” and the language as “Little Russian.” Widespread use of Ukrainian as a written language and in education dates only from after the Bolshevik revolution of 1917 and the establishment of the Ukrainian SSR in 1922.

Written Ukrainian, just like Bulgarian, Belarusian, Macedonian, Russian, and Serbian, uses the Cyrillic alphabet, which was developed in the 9th-10th century AD. St. Cyril, a 9th century monk / scholar, along with his brother, St. Methodius, adapted the Greek alphabet to Slavic needs to create the liturgical language “Church Slavonic” (the first Slavic literary language). They also made the first translations of religious texts into Church Slavonic. Later in the 10th century, a new alphabet was invented, which shared a common root with the earlier alphabet of St. Cyril, and which was named Cyrillic. Based mostly on the Greek alphabet, Cyrillic is a phonetic system, with some symbols

added (from the Coptic and Hebrew alphabets) or altered to represent sounds unique to the Slavic languages and not found in the Greek alphabet. The modern Ukrainian alphabet is an adapted version of the Cyrillic alphabet. It has thirty-three letters, three of which are unique to Ukrainian ( ї, є, ґ).

You will need to learn to associate Ukrainian

sounds with what is probably for you a new system of symbols. A complete listing of the Cyrillic alphabet and the sounds of its letters follows, starting on page 4. Wherever possible, American English pronunciation equivalents are given, but these equivalents are approximations only. You should use this chart for reference only, as all the information you need to do the readings is contained on the audio.

There are twenty Ukrainian reading lessons at the end of the course. You may choose to start the reading lessons once you've become familiar with the Ukrainian sounds or after completing the full program. Feel free to repeat the reading lessons as often as necessary for practice with the Cyrillic alphabet and the sounds it represents.

Some of the words and phrases you will read are taught in this course, but most are not. With these lessons you are learning to sound out (“read”) the Cyrillic alphabet. Reading for meaning will follow.
