    Ukraine issued 3 new stamps in the 8th Definitive Series, and reprinted two older one with different microprint varieties. They areon seperate pages, so those that do not collect microprint varietiescan simple remove the page.

    Commemorative Stamps

    Statute of Volodymyr Monomakh

    The Statute of Volodymyr Monomakh was a set of laws passed bythe Grand Duke of Kyiv in 1113. The laws capped interest rates at20% on loans, prohibted slavery and allowed slaves to buy theirown freedom. This stamp commemorates it's 900th anniversary.

    Volodymyr Vernadsky

    Volodymyr Vernadsky was aUkrainian and Soviet mineralogist and geochemist who isconsidered one of the foundersof geochemistry, biogeochemistry, and of radiogeology. Hefounded the UkrainianAcademy of Sciences

    Inspired by Kobzar

    To celeberate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Taras Shevchenko,two stamps were issued showing painting inspired by Shevchencko'sgreat work "Kobzar." The 3.30k stamp features the painting "Hantaand Zalizniak" by Nicholas Storozhenko. The 4.80k stamps shows"Fate" by Alexander Ivakhnenko.

    Semen HulakArtemovsky

    Semen HulakArtemovsky was a Ukrainian opera composer, singer (baritone), actor, anddramatist who lived and worked in Imperial Russia. He is known mainly for his comic opera Zaporozhets za Dunayem, as well as for hisdramatic talent and his powerful, rich baritonevoice. He was the nephew of the poet Petro HulakArtemovsky and a close friend of TarasShevchenko.

    Boryspil International Airport, Terminal D

    Boryspil International Airport is in Boryspil,Ukraine, 29 km east of Kyiv. It is Ukraine'slargest airport, serving more than 70% of thecountry's passenger air traffic and is one of threeairports that serve Kyiv. Terminal D, whichopened in 2012, is the airport's main international departures and arrivals facility.

    Autonomous Republic of Crimea

    Crimea is an autonomous parliamentary republic, within Ukraine. It is a Peninsula of Ukraine, located on thenorthen coast of the Black Sea. Two stamps and a souvenir sheet were issued.

    The upper left stamp depicts Bakhchisaray Palace. It was built in the 16th century and became home to a succession of Crimean Khans. The walled enclosure contains a mosque, a harem, a cemetery, living quarters and gardens.

    The upper right stamp shows AyuDag, or Bear Mountain. The Crimean mountain is a Laccolith that is a naturereserve.

    The souvenir sheets shows locations around Crimea: the city of Alushta (upper left), St. John The Baptist Churchin Kerch (upper right), wine cellars in Messandra (lower left), pottery from the ancient city of Kerch (lower right),and a panorama of the southern coast of Crimea (center).

    Easter

    Since most of Ukraine is Orthodox,Easter is celebrated by the Julian Calendar. In this picture we see an Easterbasket with traditional Ukrainian Easterimagery: Pysanky (decorated eggs),Paska (a special loaf of bread bakedfor Easter), an embroidered Ukrainiantablecloth, and pussywillow branches,which are handed out on Palm Sundayinstead of palms.

    1150 Years ofSlavic Literature

    St. Cyril and Methodiuswere Christian missionaries that created, alongwith their followers, theGlagolitic and Slavic alphabet. They first arrivedin Great Moravia 1150years ago to begin theirmissionary work. Thestamp features an icon ofthe two saints.

    First AllRussianOlympiad

    The 1913 AllRussianOlympiad was dedicatedto the opening of the AllRussian industrial exhibition, A stadium was builtin Kyiv especially for thecompetitions with racetracks, a cycletrack aswell as stands for 5,000seats. The program of theOlympiad included suchsports as track and field,marathon, soccer, wrestling, weightlifting, fencing,swimming, gymnastics,equestrianism, bicycleand motorcycle racingalong the Kyiv Chernihiv Kyiv route.

    Europa 2013 ThePostman Van

    The 2013 Europa StampTheme is "The PostmanVan" Ukraine issued atwo stamp setenantshowing the past and thepresent. The left stampsshows the Moskvych, acar used by postal workers in 1953. The rightstamp shows the MAZ5440, a truck used in2013 by postal workers totransport mail.

    InternationalChildren's Day

    International Children'sDay is a joint initiativebetween UNICEF and theInternational Academy ofTelevision Arts and Sciences. It's a day whenspecial programs arebroadcast for kids. Theoccassion is said to haveoriginated in Turkey in1920 and later in theWorld Conference for theWell Being of Childrenheld in Switzerland in1925. In Ukraine is it celebrated on June 1.

    St. VolodymyrCathedral

    Part of the Beauty AndGrandeur of Ukraineseries, the St. VolodymyrCathedral shows a pictureof the gold dome of thisNeoByzantine OrthodoxChurch. The church isbuilt on the supposed siteof St. Volodymyr theGreat's baptism in the cityof Kherson. St. Volodymyr converted thecountry to Christianity in988.

    900th Anniversatyof the PrimaryChronicle

    This souvenir sheet commemorates the writing ofthe Primary Chronicle byNestor the Chronicler. ThePrimary Chronicle is ahistory of Kyivan Rus fromabout 850 AD to 1110 AD,originally compiled in Kyivabout 1113. The work isconsidered to be a fundamental source in the interpretation of the history ofthe Eastern Slavs. Thestamp shows Nestor theChronicler writing theChronicle with imagesfrom the stories in it allaround him.

    1025th Anniversary of the Baptism of Kyivan Rus'

    This souvenir sheet commemorates the mass baptism of Kyivan Rus in 988. Grand PrinceVolodymyr the Great converted to Orthodox Christianity in 988 as a condition for marrying Byzantine Emperor Basil IIs sister, Anna Porphyrogenita. Upon his return to Kyiv, the monarch destroyed the wooden statues of Slavic gods and led all the residents of the city to the Dnipro Riverfor a mass baptism. Eastern Orthodoxy became the state religion of Kyivan Rus. The stamp features the mural Baptism of Kyiv located in the Patriarchal Cathedral in St. Volodymyr in Kyiv.This stamp is joint issue with Russia and Belarun.

    Pumpkins

    Yevdokim Ignatievich Voloshynov wasan amazing master innovator as anartist and photographer. After trainingat the St. Petersburg Academy of Artsin 18591864 he taught art at theKharkiv Institute for Noble Maidens.He was known for his open air still lifepainting, showing classic depictions offruit in an outdoor setting. This stampfeatures his still life painting Pumpkins.

    Antonov AN158

    The AN158 is a regional twinjet intended tocarry up to 99 passengers over a range up to4000 km. It is a stretched fuselage version ofthe AN148. The airplane successfully completed its first flight on 28 April 2010. On February 28, 2011, the aircraft received Certificatesissued by Interstate Aviation Committee andState Aviation Administration of Ukraine.

    This miniature sheet features five types of bread and 4 labels. The top stamp features a traditional loaf ofwheat bread called Palianytsia (). The first stamp in the second row features Kalach (), around white bread, usually in the form of a ring or with a small hole. The center stamp shows a weddingloaf ( ), a fancy bread used during the Blahoslovennia, a rituall blessing done by thebride's and groom's parents prior to a wedding ceremony. The right stamp shows a loaf of black ryebread, a daily staple since the 11th century ( ). The bottom stamp shows 3 bagels(). The four labels show the process of making bread: picking grain (upper left), milling using awindmill (upper right), baking in an oven (lower left), and presenting on a table (lower right).

    Dnipropetrovsk

    Part of the Beauty and Grandeur of Ukraine series, a stamp and a minature sheet was issues tohonor Dnipropetrovsk, an oblast (province) and city in Ukraine.

    The stamp features the city of Dnipropetrovk. It is Ukraine's fourth largest city, with about onemillion inhabitants. It is located southeast of Ukraine's capital Kyiv on the Dnipro River, in thesouthcentral part of the country. A vital industrial center of Ukraine, Dnipropetrovsk was one ofthe key centers of the nuclear, arms, and space industries of the Soviet Union. Because of itsmilitary industry, Dnipropetrovsk was a closed city until the 1990s.

    The miniature sheet features 4 stamps about the Dnipropetrovsk oblast. The top stamp, valuedat 2.50 UAH, shows a Zenit3SLB rocket on a launch pad. The rocket is manufactured in theoblast. The middle stamp, valued at 2.00 UAH, shows the Quay in the city of Dnipropetrovsk.The Quay is the riverfront area that is a popular tourist attraction filled with many shops andtourist attractions. The bottom stamp, valued at 2.00 UAH features the Trinity Cathedral( ) in the city of Novomoskovsk. It was built in 1778 by Yakym Pohrybniak fromwood without any nails. The stamp on the right, valued at 3.30 UAH features Petrykivskyi FolkArt ( ), a folk art style that was created in the Dnipropetrovsk villagePetrikovka.

    Vinnytsia

    Part of the Beauty and Grandeur of Ukraine series, this stamp and minature sheet was issued to honor the city and oblast (province) ofVinnytsia.

    The individual stamp features the water tower in the city of Vinnytsia. The tower was built in 1912 by architect Gregory G. Artynov. Itserved both as a water tower and fire watch tower. The building survived unscathed through both the Soviet Revolution and World War II.After post World War II reconstruction, the tower was converted into living quarters for municipal employees. In 1985 its function onceagain changed, and it became a military museum, a function it still serves today.

    The miniature sheet celebrates the oblast by showing us four scenes on stamps. The upper left stamp (1311) shows Liadova Village onthe Dniester River. The upper middle stamp (1313) displays Scherbatova Palace , in the town of Nemyriv. This neoclassical buildingwas commissioned by Princess Scherbatova in 1894 and took 23 years to complete The stamp on the right (1312) shows Holy TrinityOrthodox Convent in Brailiv. Construction began in 2006, and in 2007 the convent opened. It contains a church, an orphanage, and awellness center staffed by 11 nurses. The bottom stamp (1314) shows Roshen fountain on Vinnytsia's Festyvalny Isle. It was built byRoshen Confectionery Corporation. It is the only floating fountain in Ukraine and the largest one in Europe.

    History of NationalCommunication

    This stamp features a lettercarrier on horseback blowing apostal horn to signal his arrival.The arrival of mail by horseback post is one of the earliestform of long distance communication. Horns were blown byletter carriers to signal their arrival and departure. Most lettercarriers were travelling at extremely high speed to meettight deadlines and the hornwas blown for the safety of thepeople in their path.

    Vera Kholodna

    Vera Kholodna was the first star ofRussian silent cinema. Because ofBolshevick destruction of her films,only five still exist of an estimated 50100 movies. She died of the SpanishFlu in 1919.

    Generous Ukraine Autumn

    The third stamp in the Generous Ukraine series, this stamp features the season ofAutumn. The sheet shows a woman in Ukrainian attire surrounded by plants. typicallyharvested in the Fall. The top stamp shows a mountain ash, whose berries areproduced in the fall. The bottom left stamp shows a pumpkin, a fruit typically harvestedin the fall. The bottom middle stamp has a Dahlia bloom, a plant that blooms in theearly fall. The bottom right stamp shows the mushroom Boletus edulis, a mushroomharvested in the fall, which is praised for its flavor and versatility in the kitchen..

    Lyadova Useknovensky Cave Monastery

    The Lyadova Cave Monastery is a Ukrainian Orthodox Monastery located on the left bankof the Lyadova River, bordering Moldova. The monastery was founded by St. Anthony ofthe Caves in 1013 as he traveled from Mt. Athos to Kyiv. He allegedly had carved into therock cell to start the building.

    Liberation of Kyiv

    To celebrate the 70th anniversaryof the liberation of Kyiv from theNazis, a stamp was issued withthe linograph Kyiv Is Ours! byartist George Malakov. The artwork shows the Red Army takingback Kyiv from the Germans.

    Olha Kobylianska

    Olha Kobylianska was a Ukrainianmodernist writer and feminist. Herwritings were influenced by GeorgeSand and Friedrich Nietzsche. Kobylianska was interested in the Ukrainianpeasantry, and often wrote about thelives of these people. She depicted thestruggle between good and evil andthe mystical force of nature, predestination, magic, and the irrational in manyof her stories of peasant life. Her worksare known for their impressionistic, lyrical descriptions of nature and subtlepsychological portrayals.

    Ukrainian Farmstead

    The 2013 Ukrainian Homestead miniature sheet shows the outside of a typical Ukrainian farm in thewinter time. The stamp in the upper left corner shows a squirrel, the upper right, a group of bullfinches. The lower left stamp shows two children holding a star typically carried by Christmas carolers. The lower right stamp shows a turkey standing in front of a snowman.

    A Pectoral is a big round breast adornment made of metal, more frequently of gold, that is wornaround the neck. The Pectoral of this miniature sheet is one of the most famous if not the mostfamous finds in the history of Ukrainian archaeology. It is believed to have once graced thebreast of a Scythian king. It was discovered by Boris Mozolevsky, an archaeologist and a poet, inthe Tovsta Mohyla Barrow, in the Ukrainian steppe, not far from the town of Ordzhonikidze, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, in 1971.

    Mykola Amosov was a Ukrainian doctor, heart surgeon, inventor, bestselling author, andexercise enthusiast, known forhis inventions of several surgical procedures for treatingheart defects.

    Ports

    This setenant is a joint issue with Morocco. The stamp on the leftshows the port in the city of Odessa in Ukriane. The stamp on theright, shows the Port of Tanzher in Morocco.

    Churches

    This joint issue with Romania, depicts two UNESCO Heritage sites, seperated by a label. The stamp on the left, features The Church of the Saviour at Berestovo, Ukraine.The stamp on the right shows Sucevia Monastery, in Sucevita, Romania. The labelconnecting the two stamps shows Petro Mohyla, Metropolitan of Kiev, Halych and AllRus' from 1633 until his death in 1646.
