It’s an environment in which we always encourage the highest standards of professionalism and ethics. Hardly a surprise, then, that the AAT Accounting Qualification is so well respected by small businesses, large organisations, the public sector and other professional bodies alike.

And there’s plenty of opportunity out there. Through the AAT qualification you’ll gain a whole new set of skills and understanding of accountancy and finance – disciplines needed in every corner of modern life.

What is an accounting technician?

The term covers a huge variety of accounting jobs, from administration to head of finance. You could find yourself in forensic accounting, corporate finance, tax, insolvency… in fact, any number of exciting areas. It all depends on where you work, the experience you gain and how ambitious you are. Once you’ve achieved the qualification and AAT professional membership, the sky’s the limit!

Accountancy. Business isn’t business without it.

• From the smallest local enterprise to the biggest multinational, they all rely on the talents of people trained in accountancy.

• It’s an exciting, exacting business discipline.

• Enjoy opportunities with every type of organisation with the AAT Accounting Qualification.

• Be a key part of a large organisation’s wider financial team – or the single indispensable finance expert in a smaller business.

• Work freelance, providing accountancy services for small businesses and other self-employed people like yourself.

To give you the very best chance to progress, we’re committed to providing training, support and advice throughout your career. Training with AAT means you’re also a student member; with professional membership available after you’ve qualified, our support’s there for the long term. And you’ll be able to call on our expertise and resources whenever you need them.

Whatever your goals, you know you’re in the right hands Founded over 25 years ago and now boasting a membership of nearly 125,000, the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) is committed to support, training, advice and development. More than an examining body, it’s the worldwide membership organisation for accounting professionals.

“ I study AAT part-time in the evening whilst studying my A Levels during the day. I would recommend AAT to other people who are in a similar position to me, as I believe that it is an excellent way to learn accountancy in your own time.” Shiril PatelAAT student member

Trusted and respected – a qualified success

The AAT Accounting Qualification is based on a simple rule of thumb. It’s called the real world. Driven by the true-life expertise and knowledge that make a successful accounting professional, our qualification will give you the skills to excel at a wide range of accounting and finance jobs. Training is flexible, practical and open to all, regardless of your age or previous experience.

Having AAT qualified staff is good news for employers, too. It shows them that you have practical skills in accounting, underpinned by thorough knowledge that will help you achieve success in the workplace. And if you’re already working in accounting, an AAT qualification is a great way to build your skills and progress your career.

AAT trained people are proving indispensable assets to players like the NHS, Morrisons, Vodafone and KPMG. Small wonder we’re one of the UK’s largest awarding bodies of skills-based accounting qualifications.

So widely acknowledged is the value of our training that many employers actively seek AAT qualified staff. And since our qualification is recognised internationally, some students go on to find work in other countries outside the UK.

“ I turned 50 and decided to use this milestone as an inspiration to pursue a new career. I had never worked in finance before, so starting a qualification was a daunting, yet exciting experience.

I think I have a lots to offer interms of skills and experience. The AAT qualification definitely gave me the confidence to go it alone.” Linda Fleet MAATOffice Solutions

What will I learn at each level?

7

Tell me about the qualification The AAT Accounting Qualification is split into three levels, each consisting of several units (see page 22 for details). Every level is a qualification in its own right and completion of the final level leads to the full AAT Accounting Qualification. Once you have achieved the qualification, you can apply to become an AAT professional member.

There is a range of learning options available to you, from full-time, part-time and distance learning. Check with our training providers to find one that offers the learning options to suit you.

“ For me, AAT gave me the opportunity to gain an internationally recognised accounting qualification, work for a large organisation and begin to live and earn independently.”

How long will it take to qualify? The short answer? It depends on you. The AAT Accounting Qualification is flexible enough to let you study at a pace that suits you and fits in with your other commitments.

Having decided to change careers from fashion to finance, Laura Jack secured a job as Sales Ledger and Credit Controller at a publishing company. With no accounting qualifications under her belt, she chose the AAT qualification to learn more and take on more responsibility within the finance department.

• You can expect to spend about a year on each level of the qualification.

• As a school leaver, this would probably mean three years to qualify.

• If your skills are more advanced – if you’ve previous accounting experience, for instance – you might complete training in two years or less.

• If your circumstances change, it’s also possible to take a break from your studies. But bear in mind that if the gap exceeds three years, you might have to retake parts of the qualification.

• We recommend you spend three hours a week outside of class for each unit you’re studying – increasing in the run up to assessments when you’re revising.

• We also provide a wealth of support to help you. See page 14 for information.

Full-time, part-time or distance learning?

Full-time study at one of our training providers is suited to those who are not working full-time, and often means that you can qualify sooner.

Part-time training enables you to maintain a full-time job alongside your qualification. If you’re in an accountancy related position, you will be able to practice the new skills you have learnt as you progress and reap the benefits from the start.

Distance learning from home offers you a flexible option for your training. You can choose where and when to study, and you will be able to improve your skills at your own pace.

Whichever option you choose, you will receive full support from AAT, during your training and throughout your career.

CBAs are practical, valid and robust forms of assessment that enable you to demonstrate the skills developed during your course. You will sit assessments as and when you are ready, as agreed with your training provider.

Many of the units are assessed by way of a formal computer based test, which is marked automatically and a provisional result available immediately.

Some units are assessed using other computer administered methods which can include projects, reports and workplace evidence, and are marked by your training provider or assessor.

The results for these will normally be available within six weeks. All CBAs at Level 4 involve human marking and therefore, results for these assessments will also be available within six weeks.

For more information on the method of assessment for each unit, see page 22. You will need to check with your training provider as to the availability and schedule for completing your assessments.

“ The AAT qualification has helped me understand the theory behind what I am doing on a daily basis. I hope as I continue with my studies, a promotion and a pay rise will not be far off.

I would 100% recommendAAT to anyone who was thinking of starting off in an accounting career.” Laura JackAAT student member

How will my work be assessed? All units, at all levels, are assessed using AAT designed computer based assessments (CBAs), which offer great flexibility for students and training providers alike.

What prior qualifications do I need?

You won’t need prior formal qualifications to begin studying. If you have relevant school qualifications, a degree or some accounting experience, you might be able to start at a higher level.

We only ask that you’re numerate and that you can complete assessments and written projects in English.

What level should I start my training at?

This depends on your accounting experience and qualifications. However, the teaching staff at your training provider can help you decide. Once you’ve found a provider you’re interested in, your next step should be to contact a member of its staff to discuss your course options.

You can prepare for this meeting by completing the Skillcheck questionnaire. You can complete this online at www.aatskillcheck.org

For Ian Grant and Joanna Petch, training with AAT has given them an all-important step up the career ladder at Morrisons – the fourth largest food retailer in the UK.

The AAT qualification has helped Ian in meeting his ambitions. As a result of his training, he has moved to a new position within Morrisons that involves more accountancy.

“ The AAT qualification is well recognised. And you can use it to gain further qualifications.” Ian Grant AAT student member

Tell me more about the training providers

We’ve 400 approved training providers across the UK, all meeting AAT standards. We make regular checks to ensure that training quality remains high and meets student needs.

You can choose a wide variety of locations and types – from further education colleges to private training providers.

So how do I know which provider is right for me?

You can call us to discuss your options or go to aat.org.uk/trainingproviders to find a training provider in your area. Here are some questions you might want to ask once you have put together your shortlist of centres:

• Which levels of the AAT qualification are taught?

• What’s included in the course fees (such as books and assessments)?

• What arrangements can be made for work placements?

• How flexible are the course structures?

• What approach is taken towards assessment preparation?

• Tell the provider about your work experience; if you can already demonstrate competence in certain areas, you might not have to sit all units.

“ I worked in accounts payable within Morrisons when I started my training. Once I had achieved the qualification an opportunity came up to work in financial reporting, looking for a MAAT.

The AAT qualification has helped a lot – I have an understanding of what I am doing and why.” Joanna Petch MAATMorrisons

As an aspiring singer and actress, Zeya Phillips struggled to find the right balance between attending auditions and earning enough money to supplement her aspirations.

Qualifying with AAT and setting up her own business offered her the ideal solution.

“ I really wanted to work for myself and take better control of my income so after qualifying I became a member in practice and set up my own business.

The AAT community has definitely helped. I’ve joined forces with another student who specialises in tax so we can offer a broader range of services to clients.” Zeya Phillips MAATPhillips Accountancy & Books

13

How much will my qualification cost?

AAT student membership fees and assessment fees correct at time of going to press – April 2010. *This one off fee is also payable if you start your studies at either of the next two levels.

**Assessment fees apply to all units including any project and reports. Assessment fees may be included in your course fees. Please check with your training provider.

This table assumes each level of the AAT Accounting Qualification is completed in one year. Costs of training at AAT approved training providers vary.

The exact cost of training for the AAT Accounting Qualification will depend on how and where you study, but it’ll fall into one of two main categories:

1. Training provider fees

Paid to your chosen training provider (see page 11) these cover your tuition and sometimes your course materials. Since the cost of providing AAT training depends on the size, type and location of each centre, you’ll find big differences in fees between providers – so it could pay for you to shop around.

2. AAT fees

Paid to AAT, these fees cover your student registration and the support you receive throughout your training through student membership. There are also fees to take AAT assessments.

Can I involve my employer?

If you’re working, it might be worth telling your employer about your AAT training. Their support could be a real boost. Because of the qualification’s practical nature, you might find your boss is willing to help with the costs. Some will pay your training provider’s fees, AAT fees or fund the books you need – and sometimes, all three.

Your employer might also give you time off for classes or revision, and may be able to involve you in workplace projects that are useful to your studies.

Where can I get help with paying for my course?

Depending on your circumstances, the government and other agencies may offer financial support for your AAT training. If you’re aged 16-24, for example, some courses are offered free. For more information about possible sources of funding, visit aat.org.uk/funding or ask your training provider.

How did you hear about AAT?

I found out about AAT after searching on the internet for accounting qualifications. I wasn’t sure how I was going to find the time to go to college, so I was attracted to AAT as I could study by distance learning.

Why did you decide to start the AAT Accounting Qualification?

I always regretted not taking any formal accounting qualifications, but with a young family and a lack of funds I was not in a position to fulfil my dream. When my children started to leave school I decided to fulfil the ambition and train for the AAT qualification.

How has the AAT qualification/professional membership helped in your work?

The qualification and membership have given me so much more confidence in myself and my ability.

Would you recommend AAT training to other people?

Yes, it is very well recognised and I think that employers realise that AAT professional membership shows prospective employees have valuable work experience.

And what about AAT membership, would you recommend that too?

Definitely. AAT has helped me tremendously at work and having the letters MAAT after my name gives me professional recognition amongst new and existing customers. I have recently become a member in practice (MIP) too.

Interview with Jackie Randles MAATJackie Randles trained with AAT. Here, she talks about why she chose to study in the first place and the difference it has made to her career.

“ The AAT qualification is very well recognised and has given me more confidence in both myself and my abilities.

“ A great bonus of working for myself is that I have the time to assist Caitlyn’s teacher for a few hours a week, which wouldn’t be possible in a regular 9-5 job. It’s great to be able to choose my own hours.

Without the AAT qualification, I wouldn’t be running my own business now.” Jodie Riddex MAATAccounts by Jodie

With aspirations to study accountancy at university, Jodie Riddex hit a stumbling block.

As a native South African she was classed as an international student. Faced with the prospect of sky-high tuition fees, she turned to AAT to enable her to gain a qualification whilst she worked.

Having completed the qualification, the arrival of her daughter, Caitlyn, meant there was a need for more flexibility. Becoming a member in practice (MIP) and setting up her own business was ideal.
