The document is nota summary of eligibilityrequirements, academic, housing, application and other logistical details freely available to students on the UCEAP andBSA website, and reviewed by a student in the Program Self-Assessment. The best sources of detailed programinformation are theProgram Guidefrom the prior academic cycle, as well as thePembroke / Kings Programme website. If any concerns youhave are not addressed on the UCEAP website, in the Program Guide or Need to Know document, please contact the BSA Adviser for this program.

Application DeadlinesThe Summer 2013 Cambridge/PKP program has a rolling application deadline beginning November 5, 2012 and endingFebruary 4, 2013. Please note that while Cambridges own application window is open until May 20, 2013, in order toapply for the program as an EAP student you must submit your EAP application to Berkeley Study Abroad by February 4,and you must submit the Cambridge PKP host university portion online by March 1, 2013.

Application ProcessApplying to the Cambridge/PKP program involves submitting dual applications: one for EAP and one for Cambridge.Students should access the application from theBSA website, not Cambridges. You will first submit online applicationsfor EAP and Cambridge, and then submit hard copy application materials both to BSA and directly to Cambridge. Thisincludes mailing an official UCB transcript to Cambridge. Transfer students must also submit official copies to Cambridgeof all transfer school transcripts.

GPA RequirementThe applicants cumulative GPA must be 3.2 or above at time of application. Neither Cambridge nor EAP allowrounding off (i.e. a cumulative GPA of 3.195 does not qualify).

Competitiveness of the ProgramFor Summer 2013 it is anticipated that Cambridge will be able to accommodate all the qualified applicants that apply.

Students are advised to apply as early as possible within the application window to increase their chances of getting theirfirst choice of courses and housing. Immediately after selection you will have to pay housing costs (an AccommodationFee, see explanation in Program Fees below) before you can sign up for classes and choose your housing.

AcceptanceCambridge reserves the right to select students. You will receive official selection notification from EAP after Cambridgehas notified you regarding selection. Cambridge will email their acceptance decision to you within three weeks ofreceiving your complete application (i.e. online application as well as hard copy application materials). EAP will sendselection notification to the student after Cambridge informs us that the student has been accepted to the program, hasagreed to selection terms and conditions and has paid the Accommodation Fee.

Program FeesThere is a non-refundable application fee of50 (about $80 using the exchange rate on 10/01/12) that students paydirectly to Cambridge. After receiving selection notification from Cambridge, students should be prepared to pay anAccommodation Fee (housing cost) ranging from 1630 - 2170 directly to Cambridge (about $2,608 - $3,472 accordingto todays exchange rate: 1 GBP=$1.60) in order to register for courses and apply for housing. Students will not be ableto sign up for classes or apply for housing until this fee is paid. This fee is non-refundable.

Students who are on financial aid have the option of paying a lower accommodation fee deposit of 450 GBP (about $720at 8/31/12s exchange rate of1GBP=$1.60). Upon paying the deposit the student is guaranteed Band 2 housing. To self-identify as a financial aid recipient, email theBSA Adviser. The rest of the accommodation fee is due to Cambridge assoon as summer financial aid is disbursed, which is about 10 days before the program starts. The housing fee is not paidby UCEAP as part of UCEAP fees.

Program Dates & DurationThe program runs from June 30 to August 24, 2013. Since the first day of classes at Berkeley is Thursday, August 29,2013, there is no date conflict with the start of Berkeleys Fall Semester.

Summer Financial AidFinancial aid for the summer is not as comprehensive as what students may be accustomed to during the academic yearbecause it is a trailer to the 2012-2013 academic year. If financial aid is important for your participation in theCambridge/PKP program then its essential that you plan ahead and keep the following in mind:

    1. The Financial Aid Office will likely not be able to release offers for summer until the beginning of April or later. You will not know exactly how much summer aid you will be getting until several months before departure. If youhave questions about what kind of aid you can expect, please speak with a Financial Aid Counselor at Berkeley

Study Abroad.2. Your summer financial aid award will not be disbursed until a minimum of 10 days prior to the program start date

(late June), so you will need to be prepared to pay the Accommodation Fee deposit and other pre-departureexpenses for the health clearance, student visa, and airline tickets using a credit card or other means.

    3. Your total summer financial aid package will be comprised of one or more of the following types of funds: feegrants, program grants, outside scholarships, student and parent loans and possibly alternative loans.

    Scholarships and Research Grants

Pembroke offers 4 merit scholarships each summer to cover the full cost of tuition, each 2,380 GBP (=$3,808 if1GBP=$1.60). Please consult theCambridge/PKP web sitefor more information. Scholarship applications are onlyreleased to selected students. The requirement to apply for the scholarship is a UC cumulative GPA of 3.5 orhigher. Students must apply by January 20, 2013 in order to be considered.

TheBenjamin A. Gilman Scholarship Programwill offer summer scholarships.

You can also explore applying for a summer research grant such as SURF,which will involve the added benefit ofusing your time abroad to conduct research (this option can dovetail especially well with Cambridges supervisionoption; see Curriculum below for more details).

    Curriculum

All students take 3 (three) upper division courses worth 3.33 semester units each, for a total of 10 units. See currentcourses at this site:http://www.pem.cam.ac.uk/ip/pkp/academic/clusters/ . Module 1 courses are taught in July,Module 2 courses are taught in August, and Module 3 courses are taught in July and August. Module 3 courses enda week before the program ends. A supervision (see link below) can substitute for a Module 3 course .

Course offerings are focused heavily on the humanities and social sciences, but there are also offerings in science.

If you are interested in more science-oriented coursework, science major pre-requisites, or a wider range of courseofferings, check out theUniversity of Sussex summer program, also an EAP Summer program.

The Cambridge/PKP program also offers students the unique opportunity to work closely with a Cambridge facultymember by substituting one course with a Cambridge-stylesupervisioncourse (similar to an independent study atUC). Students meet with a faculty member individually or in small groups once a week to complete a series ofresearch-based papers in the subject area.

EAP ReturneesEAP returnees are one of your best resources for information about the program. If you would like to be put in touch withstudents who have gone on the program ask theBSA Adviserfor student contacts. The Cambridge/PKP web site alsoincludes analumnisection where you can contact returned students.

Special Advice for recent Transfer Students

Transfer students who are interested in applying for the Summer 2013 program must have one semester worth ofBerkeley grades in addition to their work from their transfer school; thus only transfer students admitted in Fall 2012 canapply to EAP-Cambridge PKP Summer 2013. Transfer students who are admitted in spring 2013, who wont yet have asemester of Berkeley grades, should consider 1) applying to Cambridge PKP as a non-UC sponsored option or 2)applying for Summer 2014.

Frequently Asked Questions about the PKP application: Letters of Recommendation: PKP requires that the recommender be someone who has taught you at the college

level no more than three years ago who can comment on your academic ability. The recommendation can be from aprofessor or a graduate student instructor.

Writing sample: submit a paper you have written which showcases your writing ability. The type of paper is notspecifiedits your choice.
