BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Presently, there is a storage tank with the capacity of 200,000 gallon serve to store the daily demand for whole campus area. From the tank, the water will be distributed by existing reticulation pipe to reach the consumer.

With the increment in student intake every year and building of new hostel and block in UiTM campus area, UiTM had projected the water consumption demand for the whole campus to be increased.

Therefore, a study need to be carried out to cater for the increasing water demand. It is proposed to duplicate the existing storage tank by building the 200,000 gallon new storage

reservoir. The reserve is well allocated at the adjacent of the existing tank. From the recent site visit, the intended

area situated on the hill with 107.00m ground level. Generally, the reserve area is flat and requires a minimal earthwork. From the high ground, the water shall be able to be distributed naturally by gravity flow to whole UiTM campus.

With the implementation of this project by UiTM, the water storage shall be found sufficient to meet the water demand from whole campus area.

The next slide will show the schematic of the proposed water supply system for UiTM. However, the system need to be further clarified and confirmed by UiTM. In order for us to understand and carry out the detailed engineering study of the water supply system in

UiTM, certain documents need to be obtained :- (I) as built drawings of the existing system (II) layout plan for development of UiTM.

Material Strength SpecificationReinforcement : fy = 460 N/mm2 (main bar, beam, column, slab), fyz = 275 N/mm2

while the remaining structure element shall be Grade 25.

Design ConceptThe structural design concept are as follow:-• From the available borelog result given to us and from our observation during site visit, there are hard ground layer at the

base of the foundation. • Therefore, practically and cost optimization design opt for raft foundation system.

• RC Wall on the excavated sump pit is designed to take soil/surcharge pressure and also water contained in the balancing tank.

• 3 cases considered : tank empty with soil/surcharge pressure, tank full without soil/surcharge pressure, tank full with soil/surcharge pressure

• Conventional system with RC circular wall, ring beam, base slab, dome roof with ventilation and access into reservoir.

DESIGN CRITERIA

Design Requirement• The Proposed Reservoir shall be designed to meet the minimum design requirement as below:-

Capacity : 200,000 GallonFacilities : valve control for inlet, outlet, spare line and scouringAccess : external / internal staircase / ladderWater level indication : 900mm dia. level indicator on roof topRoad : minimum 4m wide tarred roadSecurity : 2m high fencing with double leaf gate and single leaf gate, handrailing, accessIdentification : painting / labeling of reservoir, signboards will be provided as per

authority requirement.• The reservoir shall be dirt proof, insect proof and not air tight and complete with lightning arrestor• It is proposed a balancing pipe connecting the proposed to the existing reservoir to fasten the balancing of water level.• It is also proposed to have a by-pass pipe to by-pass each or both reservoir in the event of shut down of reservoir during

maintenance period.

Brief Description of Proposed Pipeline

• Pipeline can be laid underneath the road shoulder wherever possible. • Otherwise the pipe can be laid underneath the road pavement.• It is recommended to lay pipe by using open cut / trench method as the cost will be much cheaper. • The campus area is not traffic congested area where any obstruction or inconvenient to the traffic flow is cannot be

tolerate.• Sufficient temporary traffic signatory or traffic diversion will be provided as a safety measures especially to the campus

students and road user.

The selection of pipe size is by calculating the hydraulic and losses in the pipes (minimum size of 150mm dia.)The design criteria for the water supply reticulation network shall be in accordance to MWA's Design Guidelines for Water Supply System.The design parameters used in the analysis of the reticulation are as follows: -

•Available Head for water reticulation design shall be equal to the B.W.L. of the reservoir.

•Peak Flow Factor = 2.5 (reticulation sys.) 1.0 (flow to reservoir)

•Hazen William's C-value = 100

•Minimum residual head from = 4.50 mHighest Supply Level (peak flow case)

•Minimum residual head from = 7.50 mFinished Platform Level (average + fire flow case)

•Fire Flow = 1370 l/min (22.83 l/sec)

•Maximum Hydrant spacing = 90 m (300 ft)

•Highest Supply Level (HSL) in ODL m unit = Finished Platform Level + 7.50 m (25 ft) for double Storey Building

•Maximum allowance of Hydraulic Gradient = 2m/km

in Peak Flow Case

•Maximum velocity in Peak Flow Case = 0.6 m/s

•Maximum velocity in Aver. + Fire Flow Case = 2.0 m/s
