Plan U.G.C- National Eligibility Test (NET)/SET Coaching Centre
Saurashtra University Rajkot– 360 005
1. Introduction:
The National Educational Testing Bureau of University Grants Commission (UGC)
conducts National Eligibility Test (NET) to determine eligibility for lectureship and for award of
Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for Indian nationals in order to ensure minimum standards for
the entrants in the teaching profession and research. The Test is conducted in Humanities
(including languages), Social Sciences, Forensic Science, Environmental Sciences, Computer
Science and Applications and Electronic Science.
The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) conducts the UGC-CSIR NET
for other Science subjects, namely, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences,
Mathematical Sciences and Earth Atmospheric Ocean & Planetary Sciences jointly with the
UGC. The tests are conducted twice in a year generally in the months of June and December. For
candidates who desire to pursue research, the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) is available for
five years subject to fulfillment of certain conditions. UGC has allocated a number of fellowships
to the universities for the candidates who qualify the test for JRF. The JRFs are awarded to the
meritorious candidates from among the candidates qualifying for eligibility for lectureship in the
NET. JRFs are available only to the candidates who opt for it in their application forms.
The test for Junior Research Fellowship is being conducted since 1984. The
Government of India, through its notification dated 22nd July, 1988 entrusted the task of
conducting the eligibility test for lectureship to UGC. Consequently, UGC conducted the first
National Eligibility Test, common to both eligibility for Lectureship and Junior Research
Fellowship in two parts, that is, in December 1989 and in March, 1990.
On behalf of UGC, the Central Board of Secondary Education Conduct the
National Eligibility Test(NET) for determining the eligibility of Indian nationals for the
Eligibility for Assistant Professor only or junior Research Fellowship & Eligibility for
Assistant Professor Both in Indian universities and colleges. CBSE will conduct NET in 83
subjects and 88 selected Cities of Examination spread across the country Since June-2014 .

(2) Objectives of the Scheme/centre
1) To prepare SC /ST/OBC and Minority communities candidates for appearing in NET or
SET, so that sufficient number of candidates become available for selection of Assistant
Professor in the University system from these groups.
2) It is also important that these students not only complete higher education but are
encouraged to choose teaching as a career and become role models to others of their
group.
3) Students belonging to Other Backward Classes, economically weaker sections and
physically challenged students may also avail of this coaching facility. Free of cost
4) Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes have been identified as the most depressed and
oppressed groups of Indian society constituting about 15 and 7.5 percent, respectively, of
the total Indian population. In order to safeguard their interests in independent democratic
India, specific provisions have been made to improve the status of these people socially
and educationally so that they can take their rightful place in the mainstream of the
society.
5) Despite all constitutional safeguards and measures initiated by the UGC, the position of
reservation for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, OBC (non-creamy layer), and
Minorities is far below the expected level in the universities even after more than 50 years
of Independence.
6) The Commission has been contributing towards social equity and socioeconomic mobility
of the under-privileged sections of the society through various special schemes.
7) The well being and the development of the Minorities are important indicators of the
strength and success of a democratic society.
8) The Commission has been providing separate assistance to the universities coaching for
NET to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Minority candidates. The Commission
has decided to merge this scheme with the General Developmental Assistance
scheme of the universities and assistance for this component will be over and above
the ceiling of General Developmental Assistance.
