HISTORY OF THE COMPETITION

Each year, civil engineering students from more than 250 universities across North America compete with the goal of designing, building, and racing the best concrete canoe. The competition provides students with an opportunity to build leadership skills through project management while gaining hands-on experience by working in small groups to accomplish several diverse tasks. Team members are responsible for creating and following a project schedule and budget, designing and testing lightweight, yet strong concrete mixes, constructing a canoe with an optimal hull design, as well as racing the final product. In its 27th year history, the American Society of Civil Engineers National Concrete Canoe Competition has challenged the knowledge, creativity, and stamina of more than 500 teams and 8000 students.

THE COMPETITION

Competing in the Southeast, the University of Florida belongs to one of the most competitive regions in the country – testing skills against top schools including the Uni-versity of Alabama Huntsville, University of Puerto Rico, University of South Florida, and Florida Institute of Technology. For the last four years, the UF Team has placed first in the region and has proudly represented the Southeast at the National Concrete Canoe Competition. UF has made eleven National Competition appearances with the most notable being a first place finish in 2015.

Winners are based on placement in four major categories: Technical Design Paper, Business Presentation, Final Product, and Races. Teams must submit a detailed design paper that outlines the development and construction process of the entire project. During the competition, a formal business presentation is made to highlight the team’s efforts, ingenuity, and understanding of technical concepts. Combining the concrete mix design, canoe construction, and visual design components, the final product score is based on compliance to the rules, design creativity, and craftsmanship. The final aspect of judging, the five races, consists of Men’s and Women’s Sprint, Men’s and Women’s Endurance, and Co-Ed Sprint.

WHY CONTRIBUTE?

Donating to the University of Florida Concrete Canoe Team (UFCC) means that your company is investing in the future of the engineering profession. Sponsoring UFCC is a great opportunity to promote your company while enabling the formation of well-rounded engineers at UF. The project provides students the opportunity to hone their problem solving, leadership, and technical skills. Team members commit hundreds of hours of time working in the lab each week to ensure the success of the project. The year’s schedule is created to include time for designing and testing a concrete mix design, and constructing a canoe while also rehearsing a business presentation, writing a technical design paper, and practicing for the races. The entire process is accomplished following a strict budget based solely on fundraising effort. Unlike many of our competitors, UFCC receives no funding from the university. It is only through private support that we are able to compete at a high level each year. Reflecting upon the accomplishments of the last year’s National Championship team, UFCC is building toward another successful run at the regional and national title. Please consider helping us achieve our goal.
