MYMCA ANNUAL REPORT 2015 4 MYMCA ANNUAL REPORT 2015 5

I TOOK UP THE PRESIDENCY in 2012 because I believe that the Metropolitan YMCA is well-placed to fulfil the call to action, because “faith without works is dead”. In 1946, Dr Chen Su Lan led a clarion call for social agencies such as the Chinese YMCA of Singapore (as we were then known) to transform the destiny of youth.

In our early years in Selegie Road, we used to run skills-based classes to equip youth for employment. At Palmer Road, we offered many recreational programmes to take youth off the streets and gang-related activities.

We moved our headquarters to Stevens Road in 1980 when the 30-year lease ended for International Centre at Palmer Road. With the new set up we started to attract more families with young children. We took up the government’s challenge to provide much-needed child care services to free up women into the labour force. Thanks to consistent, faithful service of our child care professionals over the decades, Metropolitan YMCA was selected as anchor operator through a new entity MY World Preschool Ltd. In 2015, MY World Preschool continued to expand, setting up six new centres in Woodlands Circle, Compassvale Ancilla, Ang Mo Kio Central, Tiong Bahru View, Sembawang Drive and

Upper Serangoon View, in that order. In the middle of 2015, we took

over all five of Care Corner’s child care operations, lock, stock and barrel, and incorporated these within MY World Preschool. I would like to record our thanks to the board and management of Care Corner for their confidence and faith in Metropolitan YMCA (and MY World Preschool); the transfer was not an easy decision by any means, but it was well-transitioned.

I fully subscribe to Dr Chen Su Lan’s vision to transform society positively through youth, and had wondered how to re-establish youth development as a core focus of the Metropolitan YMCA, instead of being overwhelmed by child care services and be known as an organisation for little kiddies! Of course the needs and issues for youth today are different. I am glad to say that over the past four years, we can see the Metropolitan YMCA growing our intention and capability to mentor and develop youth. The mentoring work includes introducing the youth leaders into management, and even board meetings. At the World YMCA and regional levels, we actively participate through our youth Change Agents and youth representatives. YOUTHsync, our homegrown youth group, direct their on-going recruitment and induction through Camp Ignite. These youth are busy with

schoolwork and numerous activities, yet commit many hours each week to plan, dream and work together. I must commend the wonderful youth team whose work with youth continue into weekends and midnights. We are sowing into the future.

Our community outreach extends to families and individuals who are poor, incapacitated, distressed. MY Manna, our food and provisions distribution programme, has grown in 2015, with two new distribution centres in partnership with the Yishun SSO and Yishun Christian Church, as well as The New Community Family Centre at Sin Ming. We believe in giving beneficiaries a choice in what they would like to receive. We also believe in collaborating with community partners. The service model has worked well and we appreciate the many volunteers and organisations that have stepped in to support.

We had a busy, fulfilling year in 2015. I would like to thank my fellow Board members for their active support, attendance at numerous meetings and events, and for maintaining a rigorous standard of governance. My appreciation also to the management team for a job well-done, even as we continue the legacy of service and faithfulness. I would also like to thank all volunteers, donors, members, partners, participants, parents, children and youth. Together we make up the Metropolitan YMCA, and together we create our future. God bless you!

DR SAMUEL YEAK

WE LOOK BACK AT 2015 with much gratitude, as we worked towards fulfilling our mission of nurturing and empowering the young for social responsibility.

We continue to engage youth to encourage social awareness, empathy and responsibility. The Mentoring programme developed a stronger research base as lower secondary students are mentored to learn coping skills which help them overcome difficulties in adolescence. Given the space and voice to lead, the youth hatched several innovative projects which would “drive people happy”, rally “superheroes” to change the world and

CEO’S MESSAGEeven to involve their parents to make a difference.

MYMCA subsidiary MY World Preschool expanded from 15 centres at the start of the year to 26 centres at year end with the opening of 6 new centres, and the transfer of 5 centres from Care Corner. Staff strength grew in tandem, with emphasis on championing character development and inculcating core values.

Strong families make strong communities. Parents continue to be integral partners and active participants in family ocean camps and sit-in sessions for enhancement programmes. There were lots of opportunities for family bonding through health and wellness programmes.

MY Manna expanded with the opening of two new centres, along with new groups of volunteers who helped with the food and provisions distribution to individuals and families in need. Student volunteers continued to stream in for MY Big Sweep to clean homes of needy individuals on a fortnightly basis. Not forgetting our own staff from various departments who undertook their fair share of CSR to organize activities and bring cheer to the elderly, and Toy Library volunteers who attended to children with special needs with their creative props and staged musical performances.

We also welcomed staff, interns and student groups from other YMCAs. Our partner YMCAs came for a three-day conference on “Building a Sustainable YMCA”.

Indeed, building a sustainable YMCA has many challenges. While hospitality operations and childcare services provide the revenue streams for youth development and community services, we are thankful for the support we received from charity ambassadors who help raise funds through Flag Day 2015. We appreciate all donors who gave generously in response to our appeal for funds to sustain meaningful causes. In the Jubilee year of Singapore, we were also thankful for matching grants from NCSS for our community work.

As we prepare for our 70th year milestone in 2016, we look forward to exciting ventures ahead, including undertaking a brand review exercise, refreshing our building façade and renovating parts of our building to better serve the community. With many events and programmes lined up for the year to culminate in our preschool graduation ceremony and 70th Anniversary Dinner in November 2016, we invite you to join hands with us to work towards a young generation strong in body, mind and spirit, leading positive community transformation.

PHYLLIS TAN

MY World Preschool Ltd

As we prepare for our 70th year milestone in 2016, we look forward to exciting ventures ahead.”

MY MENTORINGA school-based programme aimed to instill and develop social-emotional skills for lower-secondary school students, MY Mentoring adopts a framework where mentees are able to increase and develop their self-esteem through experiential and service learning sessions. The programme develops in our young people self-awareness to make responsible decisions to influence their peers. We have been at this for the 2nd year and hope to expand this programme to more schools.

YOUTHSYNCA youth-led movement of MYMCA, YOUTHsync aims to be the platform for youth volunteers to serve the community. Youths are mentored to shine through their talents to bring about positive social changes to our community, regardless of their diversity in their backgrounds.

YMCA WORLD CHALLENGE, JUNE 6For the YMCA World Challenge, our youths campaigned against the stereotypical idea that youths use #YOLO, aka “You Only Live Once”, as an excuse to spend their lives doing frivolous activities. Instead, there are many who choose to be empowered and actively engaged in meaningful activities as their way of living. Youths were challenged to post a picture of themselves in meaningful activities on social media and tag a friend to do the same. A total number of 1.3K audiences were reached through the online posts and the final video had garnered a total of 2.4K organic reach.

YES CAMP CAMPAIGN “DRIVE THEM HAPPY”, JULY 12‘Drive Them Happy’ campaign was initiated by youths as their appreciation towards bus captains who tirelessly provide commuting convenience through transport services. Incidentally, the campaign captured a deeper significance as it was launched 5 days after the breakdown of MRT lines (East-West and North-South). Three hundred bus captains across four major bus interchanges were deeply touched.

SG50, #50UP CAMPAIGN, JULy 27 – AUGUST 9‘#50UP’ served as a reminder for Singapore’s youths to be appreciative of their nation’s progress. The youths gathered 50 birthday wishes in commemoration of the nation’s 50 years of independence and ‘UP’wards progress towards the future.

PROFESSOR ROBBIE GOHVice-President, Metropolitan YMCA Board, and Vice Dean (Arts & Social Sciences), National University of Singapore

What is the key to working effectively with youth?I’ve been working with youth for almost 40 years now. I am very careful to only say things that I personally believe in, otherwise they will never be convinced enough to follow you. I think that’s the best way to work with youth. I do this with my own kids as well. If I don’t believe in something, I won’t ask them to do it.

How has working with youth changed over the years?Social media has had a very profound way of changing everything. Face-to-face mentoring has become even more important, because if we completely lose the face-to-face time, we will lose a lot of what is real in influence.

What is YOUTHsync hoping to achieve?YOUTHsync is a very important initiative because there is regular, face-to-face interaction. There is enough protracted contact for us to influence them. We seek to mentor them and give them leadership responsibilities, to build another generation of leaders with a passion for engaging society.

YOUTH LEADERSHIPIn exploration of youths being change makers of communities, we speak to Professor Robbie Goh and

two youth leaders from YOUTHsync on their shared passion and belief in Youth Leadership.

FEATURE STORY

CHUA YUNZE, 19Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), Current President, YOUTHsync

Why should youth take up leadership positions?Youth are the future. They need the opportunity to take charge, and they need the experience of leading and taking responsibility. They need to learn and make mistakes as a youth leader, so that they will be adequately equipped to take on leadership positions in future with much higher stakes and responsibilities.

What is it like to be Chairman of YOUTHsync?I have honestly never seen or imagined myself as the kind of person who would lead others. I’ve always thought of myself as a follower, who would diligently do whatever task or job he was assigned. Now that I have been trusted with the responsibility of leadership, however, I have learned much that I probably would not have learnt if I had just stayed a follower.

Name one leader who inspires you. Why?My father, who has also taught me much, if not almost all, of what I know today. What makes him such a great leader in my eyes is the amount of trust that he holds for others. In the corporate world he operates in, trust is a very important thing. His relationships with his employees are all built on mutual trust and respect, and not sheer authority and dominance. That’s what makes him an inspiring and admirable leader.

ALEX MATHEW NORONHA, 21National University of Singapore, Past President of YOUTHsync

What do you think makes a good leader?A good leader is always one that has a heart for the cause. In making a difference in the community, that leader must have passion for contributing to the community, before he can lead others.

What makes you willing or motivated to be a leader? It gives me a sense of challenge, allowing me to push the boundaries of my leadership capabilities. Also, the one thing that makes me most willing to lead, is if I know that what I can bring to the table, is really required by the team.

What are some challenges you have faced as a youth leader?Juggling student life, personal life, recreation and leadership would be the trickiest. You find yourself with limited time for each activity. My strategy for overcoming this challenge would be overlapping them. Who says you can’t be a leader and do recreational activities? My favourite times are YOUTHsync bonding days, where I go to meet friends, play games, and lead my team – all at the same time!

MY MANNASupplying basic groceries and toiletries to poor families on a monthly basis, MY Manna seeks to alleviate the financial pressure of those who have fallen through the cracks of a fast moving society. We rely heavily on volunteers who are willing to sacrifice their time and energy to do this.

SPECIAL PROJECT – MY BLESSINGSA spin-off from MY Manna, this special project saw new volunteers from Poi Ching School Parent Support Group and Visa World Pte Ltd join us to deliver 181 goodie-bags over the year to beneficiaries during festive seasons. MY BIG SWEEPMY Big Sweep brings to decency the living conditions of the destitute elderly and disadvantaged, who are unable to maintain basic home cleanliness themselves. By cleaning their homes, we make their homes – mostly rental and one-room flats, a better place to live in.

MY ELDERLYA programme aimed at bringing fun and laughter to promote active ageing amongst senior citizens, our elderly met once a week for talks and activities at Sims Centre.

MY TOY LIBRARYMY Toy Library uses play, music and movement to engage children with special needs. On our monthly visits to special needs schools across Singapore, our mobile collection of toys lovingly sewn by Japanese and local volunteers are presented to the children through songs and skits.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH SERVICES We believe in building a compassionate community by working with volunteers and community partners to provide assistance to the less privileged. It was truly heartwarming to see the passion and dedication displayed by our faithful partners to reach out to the different needs of the local community.

“I feel fulfilled to be able to do something for special needs children. Volunteering is also an opportunity

to make friends, both local and international.” LILY ANG

THE SOCIAL SERVICE OFFICE, located at Block 746, Yishun Street 72, was officially opened by Minister for Social and Family Development, Tan Chuan-Jin. It has been in operation since March this year, and serves more than 1,800 residents in the area.

In a partnership involving the SSO, MYMCA and the Yishun Christian Church (Anglican), 10 needy individuals and families will be able to pick out groceries and household items at the Yishun Christian Church (Anglican) every month.

Through MYMCA’s MY Manna programme, MYMCA will supply the groceries to the church, where volunteers will help beneficiaries referred by the SSO to select items within a need-based budget. Singles receive $50 worth of provisions a month, couples receive $60, and families get $70 to $100. Each beneficiary is also given a package of fresh produce. Shared with the Yishun residents as MY Manna’s “Dignity Shopping” programme, it is open to beneficiaries regardless of religion.

SOCIAL SERVICE OFFICE PARTNERS WITH MYMCA

When a new Social Service Office (SSO) opened in Yishun on July 24, a new partnership with MYMCA’s MY Manna programme was also launched.

Madam Lim Yan Fong, 71, one of the new beneficiaries to the programme, was referred by the SSO and will be given $50 a month to shop with. She said: “This will help a lot. I live 10 minutes from here, so I can just walk over and get groceries. It’s very convenient.”

Also in attendance at the event were Nee Soon GRC MPs K. Shanmugam, then Law and Foreign Affairs Minister, Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Lee Bee Wah and Patrick Tay, as well as North West District Mayor Teo Ho Pin.

Through the partnership of churches like Yishun Christian Church (Anglican) and The New Church, MY Manna has expanded to six satellite centres islandwide.

Ms Phyllis Tan, CEO of MYMCA, says, “We are happy to see more churches coming to partner us in community work, extending a hand of blessing to the needy in our nation. We want to reach more beneficiaries as we collaborate and tap on each other’s strengths.”

STUDENT CAREOur Pasir Ris Student Care Centre partnered with United World College (UWC) South East Asia Campus to embark on a United Nation (UN) programme entitled “Global Partners Junior Exchange Programme”. The year’s theme “Colourful communities” saw students using arts as a tool to examine urban challenges such as immigration and gender equality.

AQUATICS PROGRAMMEOur Aquatics Education Programme (AEP) places a strong emphasis in imparting the right swimming techniques to build a firm foundation in our students and our Swim Club continues to develop in them skill, strength and endurance for competitive swimming. We also offer Swimsafer course, a national water safety program developed to raise standard of swimming proficiency.

Since we started our Scuba programme in January 2015, 93 divers have learnt scuba and joined our dive trips to Bintan, Bali and Tioman. Specialising in Family Ocean Camps, we want to encourage family bonding through this healthy and enriching sport.

ENHANCEMENT PROGRAMMEDesigned to evoke interest through effective means of pedagogy, our various Enhancement Programmes - MY Budding Actor, MY Swimmers, MY Musicians, MY Kindergym, MY Zumba kids Jn. aim to unleash every child’s potential and develop them holistically from age 3 to 6. Parent sit-in sessions were held to allow parents a glimpse into how their children have progressed in their learning journey.

MY CAMPSMY Camps aim to inculcate MYMCA’s core values – Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility in our children during school holidays through fun outdoor

activities which cultivate independence and life skills. Led by our staff and volunteers, our little campers aged 4 to 12 experienced tremendous fun through outdoor learning from all our 13 camps held.

GET ACTIVE & HEALTHY We seek to provide our members affordable access to quality sports and enhancement programmes to encourage healthy lifestyles and wholesome development. During school holidays, we engage children with adventure camps which build their self confidence and resilience.

JAPANESE & KOREAN PROGRAMMEWith a growing number of Japanese and Korean expats in Singapore, MYMCA offers programmes to engage these two communities. Mr Mickey Miyawaki from Hiroshima YMCA, with assistance from Ms Shiga Shimizu, engaged 256 Japanese participants with Sports programmes and Outdoor Adventure Camps. Dr Chung Kum Suk attached from Seoul YMCA, engaged 125 participants with various sports programmes. In 2015, he reached out to 15 associates to form a Korean Section Cooperation Committee for more collaborative efforts and organized the Korean Children Song Festival in MYMCA on 31 October to celebrate family, friends and music!

Specialising in Family Ocean Camps, we want to encourage familly bonding through this healthy and enriching sport.”

In winning or losing, there is always a lesson to be learnt: values like Respect, Caring, Honesty, Responsibility, communication within the team, confidence in oneself and taking up leadership roles.”

MY MINI ADVENTURE CAMP ‘Mini’ campers (aged 4-7) learnt how it is like not to have everything prepared and served to them. Instead they learnt outdoor cooking to prepare a simple meal for themselves. Their little feet also braved the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and encouraged each other to persevere. Teamwork and appreciation of nature were reinforced at the Henderson Waves and Sungei Buloh.

MY JUNIOR SPORTS CAMP‘Junior’ campers (aged 8-12) literally had a ball of a time and improved their stamina, agility and motor skills when they took to learning Bowling, Basketball, Captain’s Ball, Dodgeball, Handball and Soccer at our intensive 5 day Sports Camp.

In winning or losing, there is always a lesson to be learnt: values like Respect, Caring, Honesty, Responsibility, communication within the team, confidence in oneself and taking up leadership roles.

MY CAMP DIARYYoung campers had a rousing good time at our three MY Camps held in June. Through the camp activities,

amidst the fun and laughter, life skills and values were taught and friendships were forged.

FEATURE STORY

MY JUNIOR SLEEPOVER CAMPThis camp was unforgettable for many campers (aged 8 to 12) as it was the first time they spent two nights away from family and built a real outdoor campfire. They sang and danced around the campfire and presented skits. There was a nocturnal confidence walk to conquer their fear of the dark. Every camper completed the walk and even asked for a repeat round!

DURING THE COLD WINTER MONTHS in America, Professor Paul Taiganides and his wife Maro have a warm and snug hideout in the tropics – the Metropolitan Y at Stevens Road, Singapore.

Professor Taiganides is no stranger to the Metropolitan Y. This year marks the 30th year since he started staying with us on his trips to Singapore in 1985. A regular guest, he returns to our hotel three to four times a year.

When asked why he chose to come back to the Metropolitan Y when he could easily stay in a five-star hotel, he says, “We like that the hotel is small and cosy, and there are no distractions. We know the staff and they are like family to us. The staff also knows our preferences and needs very well, and everything is always well-prepared before our arrival.”

Every time he meets a new staff, he gives them a small bobblehead souvenir. When he leaves, he frequently leaves a basket of fruits for the reception staff. On one occasion, in appreciation of their hospitality, he generously treated the hotel staff to a buffet!

Professor Taiganides is no stranger to Singapore. He and his family lived in Singapore for 10 years, from 1975 to

1985. At that time, his young children took Taekwondo lessons at MYMCA. Today, the children have flown the nest, but the fond memories remain.

It’s perhaps not a wonder that the Metropolitan Y feels like home to him!

Indeed, The Metropolitan Y seeks to make guests feel it is a “Home away from Home”. Consisting of 98 hotel-styled guest rooms available in various categories: Standard, Deluxe, and Suite, each specially catered for all types of business,

leisure and family travellers looking out for affordable accommodation in Singapore. All guest rooms and suites are furnished with en-suite bathroom and modern amenities, providing the utmost comfort. The studio-concept rooms bring cosiness and intimacy every traveller seeks.

What’s more special, the Metropolitan Y is a social enterprise which channels part of its profits to community outreach work so that whoever stays with us, contributes to the community with us!

A HOME AWAY FROM HOME – FOR 30 YEARS!

The Metropolitan Y has been Professor Paul Taiganides’ home away from home for 30 years.THE METROPOLITAN Y HOSTEL AND METRO Y APARTMENTSWith 98 fully furnished guestrooms in a clean, safe and friendly environment, the Metropolitan Y offers affordable accommodation to budget conscious travellers. Long term guests and families needing that extra space can opt for one of our 27 Metro-Y Apartments that come with kitchen, dining, laundry facilities and housekeeping services.

METRO-Y RESTAURANT AND CONFERENCE SERVICESShowcasing the best of western and local delicacies is our Metro-Y restaurant, renowned for serving favorites like Curry Fish Head and Iced Chendol. Discerning guests are also welcome to use our Metro-Y Conference facilities, with 7 function rooms creating 11 functions spaces for seminars, training classes and social events.

AWARDS & RECOMMMENDATIONSIn 2015, The Metropolitan Y Hostel achieved a Certificate of Excellence from Tripadvisor and received a recommendation from Lonely Planet. With the opening of Stevens MRT Stations, our Metro-Y Restaurant was also featured and recommended on Sunday Times on 29 Nov 2015.
