They are on a run of ten successful qualifications, broken only by EURO '88, for which they qualified automatically as hosts.

Discounting host nation exemptions, France and Germany hold the record for consecutive qualifications, from 1992to 2012. Like West Germany/Germany, the Soviet Union/Russia have enjoyed a record ten successful qualifications but from a maximum 14 entries.

The best percentage record for a single country is shared by Germany and the Czech Republic, who both have a100% success rate, with six and five qualifications respectively. Next best are Croatia, who have qualified four timesout of five (80%), from 1996 to 2012.

Further history was made at UEFAEURO 2012 as Spain became the first team to retain the European title after overwhelming Italy 4-0 in Kyiv.

Spain's long wait for silverware ended in Vienna in 2008 as Luis Aragons's side defeated Germany to win acompetition they had taken by storm. Fernando Torres provided the decisive blow and four years later became thefirst player to score in two EURO finals as Spain, now under Del Bosque, successfully defended their title. They hadbecome only the fifth team to complete a EURO qualifying campaign with a perfect record and crowned anothermemorable campaign with a record final win against Italy thanks to goals from David Silva, Jordi Alba, Torres andJuan Mata.

Prior to 2008 Spain had only once even reached the semi-finals finishing runners-up in 1984 since claiming theirfirst major prize on home soil in Madrid in 1964. They won that year's final 2-1 against the Soviet Union at theSantiago Bernabu. Marcelino Martnez headed a memorable winner six minutes from time after Galimzian Khusainovhad quickly cancelled out Jess Mara Pereda's sixth-minute opener.

A powerhouse of European football, Germany (West Germany from 1945 to 1990) have only once (1968) failed toqualify for the finals of either the UEFA European Championship or a FIFA World Cup that they have entered. Theyhave won each competition three times, claiming the global prize in 1954, 1974 and 1990 and becoming champions ofEurope in 1972, 1980 and 1996. They have also been runners-up in three European Championships and four WorldCups. Although it is almost two decades since their last triumph, they have reached at least the semi-finals of the lastfour tournaments.

Three-time winners and runners-up in 1976, 1992 and 2008, Germany have won 23 of their 43 finals matches all arerecords, though Spain also have three European titles to their name. UEFA EURO 2012 was Germany's 11thsuccessive final tournament also a UEFA European Championship record. Though in ominously good form inPoland and Ukraine having won all ten of their qualifiers, scoring an average of 3.4 goals per game they lost 2-1 toItaly in the semi-finals.

Germany have advanced to the knockout stages in every one of their World Cup appearances but in the UEFAEuropean Championship they have suffered group stage exits three times, finishing third in their section in 1984 and2004, and bottom in 2000.

Memorable EURO matches26/06/1996: England 1-1 Germany (5-6 pens), EURO '96 semi-finals Andreas Mller converted the decisive spot kick as Berti Vogts' team eliminated the hosts.

22/06/1980: West Germany 2-1 Belgium, 1980 UEFA European Championship final Horst Hrubesch's second goal, two minutes from time, earned West Germany a second title.

29/04/1972: England 1-3 West Germany, 1972 UEFA European Championship quarter-finalsThis first leg is considered the birth of Germany's strongest side, the so called Wembley XI.

Did you know?Despite their excellent UEFA European Championship record, Germany failed to win a finals match between theWembley triumph in 1996 and their victory over Poland in Klagenfurt in 2008. Between those years, they recordedthree draws and three defeats, scoring three goals and conceding eight.

Europe's most successful nation in the FIFA World Cup with four victories, in 1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006, Italy havebeen crowned champions of Europe on just one occasion, back in 1968 when they lifted the Henri Delaunay Cup aftera replayed final against Yugoslavia in Rome. They have experienced mixed fortunes in the competition since then, failing to qualify in 1984 and 1992 but reaching the final in both 2000 and 2012. The Azzurri won their 2014 FIFAWorld Cup qualifying group with room to spare, remaining undefeated in their ten matches to secure their place at thefinals for the 15th time in a row.

Italy's sole UEFA European Championship success came in Rome in 1968 when, under coach Ferruccio Valcareggiand with Dino Zoff in goal, Yugoslavia were beaten 2-0 in a final replay two days after a 1-1 draw. The Azzurri cameclose to adding a second European title in 2000, Sylvain Wiltord's last-gasp equaliser for France denying them beforeDavid Trezeguet ended their dreams with an extra-time golden goal.

There was more heartbreak in 2012, but a 4-0 loss to Spain was hardly close indeed, that marks the most one-sidedEURO final to date. Semi-finalists in 1980 and 1988, Italy have reached every tournament since 1992, when theywere edged out by the Commonwealth of Independent States in qualifying.

Memorable EURO matches28/06/2012: Germany 1-2 Italy, UEFA EURO 2012 semi-finalsTwo Balotelli goals and a fine overall display helped Italy eliminate their fancied opponents.

29/06/2000: Netherlands 0-0 Italy (1-3 on pens), UEFA EURO 2000 semi-finalsDown to ten men, Zoff's side overcame a side that twice failed from the spot in regulation time.

10/06/1968: Italy 2-0 Yugoslavia, 1968 UEFA European Championship finalGoals from Luigi Riva and Pietro Anastasi sealed Italy's only EURO title to date.

Did you know?Italy hosted the first eight-team final tournament in 1980 but had to settle for fourth place after losing a third-placeplay-off on penalties to Czechoslovakia.

  • England - Team profile

Best result: semi-finals 1968, 1996Coach: Roy HodgsonLeading scorers: all-time Bobby Charlton (49); current Wayne Rooney (38)Most appearances: all-time Peter Shilton (125); current Steven Gerrard (108)Association formed: 1863Nickname: Three LionsWhere they play: Wembley, London

England's recent record in major tournaments could have looked very different had it not been for penalty shoot-outs.Since losing on spot kicks to West Germany in the semi-finals of the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy, they have beeneliminated by that method from five further tournaments three UEFA European Championships (1996, 2004 and2012) and two World Cups (1998, 2006). It means the 1966 World Cup triumph on home soil remains their only finalappearance, although they qualified unbeaten and as group winners for Brazil 2014.

England are alone among Europe's World Cup-winning nations in failing to capture the Henri Delaunay Cup. Indeed, they are yet to reach a UEFA European Championship final, having come closest in 1996, when they hosted theevent, only to be denied by Germany in a semi-final penalty shoot-out defeat at Wembley. They also reached the lastfour as world champions in 1968, but otherwise the competition has brought few happy memories.

In the four eight-team final tournaments from 1980 to 1992, England were unable to reach the knockout phase, failingto qualify altogether for the 1984 edition in France. EURO '96 apart, they have also struggled to make an impressionin the 16-team finals, going out at the group stage in 2000 and suffering elimination in qualifying for the 2008tournament. On the other two occasions, in 2004 and 2012, respective quarter-finals with Portugal and Italy bothended in shoot-out disappointments.

Memorable EURO matches21/06/04: Croatia 2-4 England, UEFA EURO 2004 group stageTwo Wayne Rooney goals helped England come from behind to book a quarter-final berth.

18/06/96: Netherlands 1-4 England, EURO '96 group stageAlan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham both scored twice in a famous Wembley win.

11/11/87: Yugoslavia 1-4 England, 1988 UEFA European Championship qualifyingEngland struck four times in the opening 25 minutes in Belgrade to earn a decisive victory.

Did you know?England have only ever won one knockout fixture at a EURO final tournament ironically on penalties, against Spainafter a 0-0 draw on home soil at Wembley in 1996.
