Match backgroundLyon and Zenit both reached the last 16 of their respective European competitions in 2018/19 and will be seeking apositive start to the new UEFA Champions League season as they meet in France.

• While Lyon reached the round of 16 in last season's UEFA Champions League, Zenit got to the same stage of theUEFA Europa League; both teams' campaigns were ended by Spanish opposition, Barcelona getting the better ofLyon while Villarreal proved too strong for Zenit.

Previous meetings• Zenit won both games against Lyon when the teams were drawn together in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions Leaguegroup stage. Artem Dzyuba gave Zenit an early lead in St. Petersburg and, though Alexandre Lacazette equalisedsoon after half-time, further goals from Hulk and Danny gave the Russian side the points.

• Dzyuba got both goals as Zenit won 2-0 at the Stade de Gerland, Lyon's former home, on matchday four. Zenit wenton to finish top of the group on 15 points, nine points and two places above Lyon.

Form guideLyon• Third in Ligue 1 last season, this is Lyon's 16th UEFA Champions League group campaign – four more than anyother French club – and fourth in five seasons.

• Les Gones won their first game in last season's UEFA Champions League, 2-1 at Manchester City, before drawingthe next five, qualifying for the round of 16 with a 1-1 draw at Shakhtar Donetsk on matchday six. The 5-1 second-legloss at Barcelona was just their second defeat in 12 European matches (W4 D6).

• All three of Lyon's home group games last season finished 2-2, against Shakhtar, Hoffenheim and Manchester City.

• A 3-2 defeat by CSKA Moskva in the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League round of 16 is Lyon's only home reverse in 14European contests (W7 D6), since a 1-0 UEFA Champions League group loss to Juventus in October 2016.

• Lyon won their first two home matches against Russian clubs but have lost the last two, against Zenit and CSKA.Home and away, they have won only once in their last five games against Russian clubs (D1 L3) having beenvictorious in two of the first three (D1).

• Lyon were UEFA Champions League semi-finalists in 2010.

Zenit• Zenit claimed their sixth USSR/Russian league title in 2018/19, and the first since 2015; their last five triumphs haveall come from 2007 onwards.

• This is the St Petersburg outfit's seventh UEFA Champions League group campaign, and a first since 2015/16, whenthey reached the round of 16 for the third time.

• In 2018/19, Zenit's 12th successive European campaign, they began in the UEFA Europa League third qualifyinground, staging an astonishing second-leg comeback against Dinamo Minsk in St Petersburg to win 8-1 after extra timefollowing a shock 4-0 first-leg defeat in Belarus. They went on to beat Molde in the play-offs and finish first in a groupincluding Slavia Praha, Bordeaux and København, beating Fenerbahçe in the round of 32 before losing home (1-3)and away (1-2) against Villarreal in the round of 16.

• Zenit are without a win in nine European away matches (D2 L7) since a 3-1 victory at Real Sociedad on matchdaysix of the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League.

• While Zenit have never lost to a Ligue 1 club at home, they have been beaten four times in seven trips to Francealthough they have not lost either of their last two matches, drawing 1-1 at Bordeaux last season having won at Lyonthree years earlier.

Head coachSylvinhoDate of birth: 12 April 1974Nationality: BrazilianPlaying career: Corinthians, Arsenal, Celta Vigo, Barcelona, Manchester CityCoaching career: Cruzeiro (assistant), Sport Recife (assistant), Nautico (assistant), Corinthinans (assistant),Internazionale Milano (assistant), Brazil (assistant), Brazil Olympic team, Lyon

• A versatile defender who usually played at left-back, Sylvinho helped first club Corinthians to league titles in 1998and 1999 as well as the 1995 Brazilian Cup. With plenty of interest from Europe, Sylvinho opted for England andArsenal, enjoying two successful campaigns before moving on to Celta Vigo in 2001/02 and helping them qualify forthe UEFA Champions League for the first time in August 2003 after finishing fourth in the Liga.

• That European adventure ended with a defeat by Arsenal in the last 16, and more disappointment followed as Celtawere relegated. Sylvinho remained in the top flight, however, after joining Barcelona, but he was never a regularstarter in 2004/05 as his new club won the Spanish title.

• The Brazilian international, who won six caps, featured more frequently the following season as the Catalan giantsretained the championship, but made just one substitute appearance in the victorious UEFA Champions Leaguecampaign that culminated in a final defeat of Arsenal. Part of Barça's treble-winning team in 2008/09, he made 15league appearances and played 90 minutes against Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League final inaddition to a late cameo in the Copa del Rey final defeat of Athletic Club.

• Hung up his boots in 2010 after another season in England with Manchester City, moving into coaching back in hisnative Brazil where he worked as an assistant at Cruzeiro, Sport Recife, Náutico and Corinthians. Returned to Europeat Internazionale in December 2014, working as Roberto Mancini's assistant for 18 months.

• Joined the staff of the Brazil national team in 2016, and took charge of the Olympic team in April 2019; just a monthlater, however, was unveiled as the new head coach of Lyon, working under sporting director and club legend JuninhoPernambucano.

Sergei SemakDate of birth: 27 February 1976Nationality: RussianPlaying career: Presnya Moskva, Karelia Petrozavodsk, Asmaral Moskva, CSKA Moskva, Paris Saint-Germain, FCMoskva, Rubin, ZenitCoaching career: Zenit (assistant, caretaker), Russia (assistant), Ufa, Zenit

• A midfielder, Semak made his Russian top-flight debut as a teenager for Presnya Moskva – later renamed Asmaral –before switching to CSKA, where he was a club mainstay from 1994–2004, making 289 league appearances andscoring 69 goals. He collected his first major honour in 2002, lifting the Russian Cup with CSKA, with a maidenPremier-Liga championship following in 2003.

• Won the first of his 65 caps for Russia in the 1998 FIFA World Cup qualifying play-off against Italy in Naples (0-1);travelled to Japan for the 2002 World Cup and later captained Guus Hiddink's side to the semi-finals of UEFA EURO2008.

• Struck four goals in the 2004/05 UEFA Champions League – all against Paris – prompting the French outfit to buyhim that winter, which caused him to miss out on CSKA's UEFA Cup triumph.

• A lack of success in Ligue 1 brought him back to Russia 12 months later, to FC Moskva; after two good seasons hejoined Rubin for the 2008 campaign and went on to skipper the team from Tatarstan to consecutive Premier-Ligacrowns. Left Rubin for Zenit midway through the 2010 campaign and proceeded to win the 2010 and 2011/12 titles, meaning he was a champion for four straight seasons.

• Having hung up his boots in 2013, Semak worked as Luciano Spalletti's assistant at Zenit, stepping in as caretakercoach after the Italian was dismissed that March. Also worked as assistant to Spalletti's successor André Villas-Boasand the Russia national team before taking charge of Ufa in December 2016; returned to Zenit as head coach 18months later and led the St Petersburg club to the 2018/19 Russian league title.
