Match backgroundA first meeting between Juventus and Sporting Clube de Portugal gives both the opportunity to step up the chase tokeep pace with Group D leaders FC Barcelona.

• The teams each have three points, having won one and lost the other of their first two fixtures, and trail Barça bythree. The omens are against Sporting, however, who have never won in Italy.

Match backgroundJuventus• A 2-0 victory against Olympiacos FC last time out stretched the Bianconeri's unbeaten home run in UEFAcompetition to 24 games (W15 D9), dating back to a 2-0 reverse against FC Bayern München in April 2013.

• Juventus's 13 encounters with Portuguese sides have ended W7 D2 L4; at home their record is W4 D1 L1. All four ofthose defeats came against SL Benfica.

• The Bianconeri's sole home loss to a Portuguese Liga club came in their first encounter, Benfica triumphing 1-0 inTurin in a 1967/68 European Champion Clubs' Cup semi-final second leg (3-0 aggregate).

• Juventus got the better of Portuguese opposition in last season's round of 16, beating FC Porto 3-0 over two legs (2-0 away, 1-0 home).

• Juventus lost last season's final 4-1 to Real Madrid CF in Cardiff. They were also beaten 3-0 by FC Barcelona onmatchday one, the first time since the 2014/15 group stage they had lost successive European matches; byovercoming Olympiacos they avoided suffering three defeats in a row in Europe for the first time since 1993/94.

• The Portuguese team were 5-1 aggregate winners against Romania's FCSB in the play-offs, following up a 0-0home draw with a 5-1 success in Bucharest. That win in Romania ended Sporting's four-game losing streak inEuropean away matches.

• Sporting are in the group stage for a third time in four years. In 2016/17, they came fourth in their group behindBorussia Dortmund, Real Madrid CF and Legia Warszawa.

• Sporting qualified by finishing third in the Portuguese Liga in 2016/17.

Head coachMassimiliano AllegriDate of birth: 11 August 1967Nationality: ItalianPlaying career: UC Cuoiopelli, AS Livorno Calcio (twice), Pisa Calcio, AC Pavia, Pescara Calcio (twice), CagliariCalcio, AC Perugia, Calcio Padova, SSC Napoli, AC Pistoiese, Aglianese Calcio 1923Coaching career: Aglianese Calcio 1923, SPAL 1907, US Grosseto FC, US Sassuolo Calcio, Cagliari Calcio, ACMilan, Juventus

• A creative attacking midfielder, Allegri started out in his native Tuscany with Cuoiopelli and then Livorno, hishometown club. First appeared in Serie A for Pisa against Milan in 1988/89 but played only twice that seasonbefore heading back to Livorno.

• Returned to Serie A after helping Pescara win promotion in 1992. The following term he scored 12 goals underGiovanni Galeone, the coach Allegri still considers his mentor. After leaving Pescara in 1993, had spells at Cagliari,Perugia, Padova and Napoli before hanging up his boots back in Tuscany with fourth division Aglianese in 2003.

• Moved straight into coaching at Aglianese, prior to taking charge at SPAL and Grosseto. In November 2008 he wonthe Panchina d'Oro (golden bench) as the third division's best coach having led Sassuolo to promotion.

• Had earlier been appointed by Cagliari whom he led to ninth place in 2009, winning the Panchina d'Oro again, thistime as Serie A's best coach. A bad run of results the following season prompted Allegri's dismissal on 13 April 2010 –although he had already done enough to earn a two-year contract at Milan.

• Allegri's first season at San Siro ended with his new club winning the Scudetto for the first time since 2004.Dismissed in January 2014 with Milan 11th in Serie A, that summer he was appointed to succeed Antonio Conte atJuventus. Allegri won the Scudetto and the Coppa Italia with Juventus in his first season, also taking his side to thefinal of the UEFA Champions League, and added further domestic doubles in both 2015/16 and 2016/17, when theyagain reached the UEFA Champions League final.

Jorge JesusDate of birth: 24 July 1954Nationality: PortuguesePlaying Career: Sporting Clube de Portugal, GD Peniche, SC Olhanense, CF Os Belenenses, GD Riopele,Juventude SC, UD Leiria, Vitória FC, SC Farense, CF Estrela da Amadora, Benfica e Castelo Branco, SRAlmancilenseCoaching career: Amora FC, FC Felgueiras, CF Estrela da Amadora (twice), Vitória FC, Vitória SC, Moreirense FC,UD Leiria, CF Os Belenenses, SC Braga, SL Benfica, Sporting Clube de Portugal

• A midfielder at Sporting, Jesus enjoyed a long if low-key career with a number of smaller Portuguese sides beforemoving into coaching with fourth division Amora after hanging up his boots in 1989, leading them to a title. Then ledFelgueiras from the third division to the Liga in successive seasons, though they were relegated in his third campaignin 1995/96.

• Further Liga experience came at hometown side Estrela da Amadora, Setúbal and Guimarães, though he enduredanother relegation with Moreirense in 2004/05. In 2006/07, he guided Belenenses to fifth place and the PortugueseCup final, where despite losing to Sporting they earned a place in the UEFA Cup.

• Even better followed at Braga in 2008/09 as he guided them to UEFA Intertoto Cup success and subsequently theUEFA Cup round of 16. A fifth-place Liga finish prompted Benfica to lure him back to Lisbon in 2009 and Jesusrewarded their faith with the league title and League Cup in his debut campaign.

• After completing a hat-trick of Portuguese League Cup triumphs in 2012, Jesus's Benfica came tantalisingly close toan even bigger treble in 2013, only to finish runners-up in both the Portuguese Liga and Cup and lose the UEFAEuropa League final to Chelsea FC.

• Signed a two-year contract extension in June 2013 and led Benfica to another UEFA Europa League final thefollowing season, although they again lost, this time to Sevilla FC. That disappointment was somewhat soothed by aclean sweep of the three domestic trophies, with another league and League Cup secured in 2014/15, during whichJesus became the Benfica coach with the most victories and the most league matches. Unexpectedly left to joinSporting in June 2015, taking the club to the Liga's runners-up spot in his first season – behind Benfica – and third thefollowing year.
