Match backgroundReal Madrid CF had a rude awakening on matchday four, but the holders are still well placed to reach the UEFAChampions League round of 16 for the 15th season in a row as they visit APOEL, who are still harbouring faint hopesof a surprise qualification of their own.

• Madrid won their first two Group H games, including the 3-0 home victory against APOEL on matchday one, butpicked up just one point from their two fixtures against Tottenham Hotspur FC and are second in the section on sevenpoints, three behind their English rivals. Zinédine Zidane's side nevertheless hold a five-point cushion over bothAPOEL and Borussia Dortmund, and will qualify if they win, or if they draw and Dortmund fail to win at home toTottenham.

• APOEL's situation is simple; they must win to stay in contention for a top-two place.

Previous meetings• The teams met for the only time before this season in the 2011/12 quarter-finals, with Madrid posting a comfortablevictory. Three goals in the last 19 minutes of the Nicosia first leg, from Karim Benzema (72, 90) and Kaká (82), put theMerengues in command of the tie; they followed up by winning 5-2 at home with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice andKaká, José Callejón and Ángel Di María once apiece. Gustavo Manduca and Esteban Solari were on target forAPOEL.

• The teams for the first leg at the GSP Stadium on 27 March 2012 were:APOEL: Chiotis, Paulo Jorge, Oliveira (Kaká 13), Poursaitides, Aílton, Charalambides, Tričkovski, Pinto (Solari 72),Morais, Alexandrou (Sousa 46), Boaventura.Madrid: Casillas, Arbeloa, Ramos, Pepe, Coentrão (Marcelo 64), Khedira, Nuri Şahin (Granero 84), Özil, Ronaldo,Benzema, Higuaín (Kaká 64).

Match backgroundAPOEL• The Cypriot club's record against Spanish sides is W1 D5 L11; at home W1 D4 L3. That sole win came in the mostrecent encounter, a 2-0 defeat of Athletic Club in last season's UEFA Europa League round of 32.

• At home in this season's group stage, APOEL have lost 3-0 to Tottenham and drawn 1-1 against Dortmund.

• The Tottenham defeat and a 1-0 loss to RSC Anderlecht in last season's UEFA Europa League round of 16 areAPOEL's only reverses in their last 13 European home games – nine of which ended in victory. Those two defeatsand the Dortmund draw featured the only goals APOEL have conceded in their last nine home fixtures.

• APOEL have not won a match in the UEFA Champions League, group stage to final, since beating OlympiqueLyonnais 1-0 in their round of 16 second leg on 7 March 2012. Their subsequent record is D3 L9.

• The Cypriot club are in the group stage for a fourth time, having previously qualified in 2009/10, 2011/12 – when theywent all the way from second qualifying round to quarter-finals, losing to Madrid – and 2014/15.

• APOEL won through from the second qualifying round to reach this group stage, beating Luxembourg's F91Dudelange (2-0 on aggregate) and FC Viitorul of Romania (4-1). In the play-offs they overcame SK Slavia Praha 2-0at home before a goalless away draw.

• Thwarted in the play-offs by FC København 12 months ago, APOEL went on to finish first in their UEFA EuropaLeague group, subsequently ousting Athletic 4-3 on aggregate in the round of 32 before losing to Anderlecht 1-0 bothhome and away in the last 16.

• APOEL qualified for this season's UEFA Champions League by clinching a fifth successive Cypriot league title in2016/17.

Real Madrid• Madrid's first away game in Group H was a 3-1 success at Borussia Dortmund on matchday two, but they lost by thesame scoreline at Tottenham last time out.

• That means Zidane's team have lost two of their last three UEFA Champions League away games. A 2-1 defeat atClub Atlético de Madrid in last season's semi-final second leg (4-2 aggregate) ended Madrid's six-game unbeatenaway run in the UEFA Champions League (W3 D3). They have now lost three of their last 14 away matches, the othera 2-0 reverse at VfL Wolfsburg in the 2015/16 quarter-final first leg; they won seven of those games.

• Madrid have lost just two of their last 23 European fixtures, winning 15 and drawing six.

• The Spanish team have a perfect record against Cypriot clubs, winning all seven previous contests and scoring 37goals while conceding only three. Away from home their goals tally is 17–0.

• Born in Marseille to Algerian immigrant parents, Zidane took his first steps towards footballing superstardom atCannes, transferring to Bordeaux in 1992. Blossomed into a French international, scoring twice on his debut againstthe Czech Republic in August 1994.

• Left Bordeaux after helping them reach the 1996 UEFA Cup final and joined Juventus, where he was a Serie Awinner and UEFA Champions League runner-up in each of his first two seasons. Made a then world-record €78mswitch to Madrid in 2001.

• Inspired France to 1998 FIFA World Cup glory – scoring two headers in the Saint-Denis final against Brazil – and atUEFA EURO 2000, where he was player of the tournament; winner of the Ballon d'Or in 1998, he was also voted FIFAWorld Player of the Year in 1998, 2000 and 2003.

• Made it third time lucky in the UEFA Champions League final by hitting a spectacular volleyed winner in Madrid's 2-1victory over Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the 2002 showpiece at Hampden Park. Landed the UEFA Super Cup,European/South American Cup and Spanish Liga the following season.

• Announced his international retirement after UEFA EURO 2004 yet returned a year later and proved inspirational atthe 2006 World Cup – especially with a virtuoso display in a quarter-final triumph over holders Brazil; however, wasdismissed for a headbutt on Marco Materazzi in the final against Italy, the last match of his career.

• Became assistant to Carlo Ancelotti in 2013/14 – the season Madrid claimed their tenth European title. Took chargeof Real Madrid Castilla for the next campaign, and in January 2016 succeeded Rafael Benítez as head coach, leadingthe club to yet another European Cup that May – the seventh to lift the trophy as player and coach. Added the UEFASuper Cup three months later, making him the fifth man to win that trophy in both guises, and finished 2016/17 bybecoming the first coach to win successive UEFA Champions Leagues, also guiding Madrid to a first Liga title in fiveyears.
