Match backgroundAC Milan welcome holders FC Barcelona to San Siro for the first leg of a UEFA Champions League quarter-finalpitting together two of the continent's heavyweights – with the Italian side hoping for a case of third time lucky.

• The Rossoneri twice failed to get the better of Barcelona when the clubs met in the group stage of this season'scompetition. Josep Guardiola's men took four points from the two encounters – including a 3-2 win in Milan – to finishtop of their section.

• Competing at this stage for the first time since 2006/07, when they went on to lift the trophy, seven-time winnersMilan can take heart from the fact they have never lost a home quarter-final tie in the European Cup. That is unlikelyto daunt Barcelona, now champions four times and seeking a fifth successive semi-final appearance – which wouldequal the record set by their arch-rivals Real Madrid CF from 1956 to 1960.

Previous meetings• There was no shortage of goals and excitement when the clubs met in Milan on matchday five. Barcelona prevailed3-2 at San Siro on 23 November to consign their hosts to the runners-up berth in Group H. Xavi Hernández hit a63rd-minute winner after Zlatan Ibrahimović (20) and Kevin-Prince Boateng (54) had cancelled out leads givenBarcelona by Mark van Bommel's own goal (14) and Lionel Messi's penalty (31).

• The teams' matchday one meeting on 13 September finished 2-2, Thiago Silva scoring a 92nd-minute equaliser forMilan after Pedro Rodríguez (36) and David Villa (50) had overturned Pato's goal in the first minute.

• The sides have squared off 13 times overall in UEFA competition, with Barcelona recording five wins to Milan's fourand scoring 19 goals to the Italian side's 18. Milan's record in six home outings against Barcelona reads W2 D1 L3.

• Barcelona have won on their last two visits to San Siro to face Milan, also beating the Serie A outfit 1-0 in the 2005/06UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg thanks to Ludovic Giuly's goal.

• Van Bommel and Maxi López, now Milan players, played for Barcelona that night. The full lineups for that match on18 April 2006 were:Milan: Dida, Kaladze, Nesta, Stam (Cafu 77), Serginho, Gattuso (Ambrosini 74), Seedorf, Pirlo (Maldini 67), Kaká,Shevchenko, Gilardino.Barcelona: Valdés, Oleguer (Motta 75), Márquez, Puyol, Van Bronckhorst, Edmílson, Van Bommel, Iniesta, Giuly(Belletti 70), Eto'o, Ronaldinho (Maxi López 89).

• Milan's last victory against Barcelona came on 20 October 2004 in the UEFA Champions League group stage, AndriyShevchenko scoring the only goal. Gennaro Gattuso, Alessandro Nesta, Clarence Seedorf and substitute MassimoAmbrosini played for the Rossoneri with Xavi, Carles Puyol, Víctor Valdés and substitute Andrés Iniesta lining up forthe Blaugrana. Ambrosini and Gattuso are also survivors of Milan's only previous win at the Camp Nou, 2-0 on 26September 2000.

• The clubs' most high-profile encounter was the 1994 UEFA Champions League final in Athens, which Milan won4-0. Milan also prevailed when the pair met in the 1989 UEFA Super Cup, winning 1-0 at home after a 1-1 away draw.

Match background• Milan have a formidable home record in European Cup quarter-finals. This is their 15th appearance in the last eightand they have yet to lose a home leg at this stage, with ten wins and four draws.

• That record will be put to the test against a Barcelona side who have won their last six away fixtures in the UEFAChampions League – and scored 15 goals in four games on the road in this term's competition.

• Overall, Milan have won 11 and lost three of the 14 quarter-finals they have contested. Their most recent victorywas against FC Bayern München in 2006/07, the season of their last European triumph. The most recent defeat cameagainst Spain's RC Deportivo La Coruña in 2003/04 when they famously surrendered a 4-1 first-leg advantage inGalicia. They had no quarter-final matches in 1992/93 and 1993/94, because of the evolving format of the newlyestablished UEFA Champions League.

• Barcelona have won the same number of quarter-finals as Milan, with 11 wins and two defeats from 13 appearancesat this stage. Like Milan, they had no quarter-finals to negotiate when reaching the final in 1991/92 and 1993/94.

• Barcelona have won their last five quarter-finals in the UEFA Champions League – four in a row between 2008 and2011 – and another in 2006. Their last defeat at this stage was against another Italian team, Juventus, in 2002/03.They last lost the away leg of a quarter-final tie at Panathinaikos FC in 2001/02.

Competition factsUEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?

• Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through on 28 occasions, including SL Benfica, APOEL FC, FCBayern München and Chelsea FC in this season's round of 16, although only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of PanathinaikosFC in the 1995/96 semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's win against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 roundof 16 – has a side progressed after a home first-leg loss. The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achievedby RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals when they lost 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home.

• Twenty-one ties have been decided on away goals, including six where the triumphant team lost the first leg.

• In all, 19 ties have required extra time. Eight have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, three roundof 16 encounters and the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC.

• Eleven ties have gone to penalties, including the game between APOEL FC and Olympique Lyonnais in the 2011/12round of 16. Five of these were finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2008. The first two-legged tie decided on spotkicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw.

• There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Ten have finished 1-0 on aggregate, mostrecently Tottenham Hotspur FC's narrow victory against AC Milan in the 2010/11 round of 16.

• FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugalin the 2008/09 first knockout round, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg. Thosetwo games also featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any previous UEFA Champions League knockout tie.

• FC Bayern München's 7-0 second-leg defeat of FC Basel 1893 in the 2012/12 round of 16 is the largest margin ofvictory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match.

• Chelsea FC-Liverpool FC in 2008/09 featured 12 goals over the two legs, a quarter-final record.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995, Real Madrid CF1998, AC Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times.
