The Udmurt Republic is a territorial entity of the Russian Federation. Udmurtia is part of the Privolzhsky Federal District and the Ural Economic Region. The capital of the republic is Izhevsk. There are 25 municipalities and 6 cities and towns in the republic. Udmurtia plays an important role in transit as it is crossed by two federal railroads and is located in the basin of the Kama River. The population of the republic is 1,517,472 people (2014), 60% of whom are Russians, 29.3% are Udmurts, 6.9% are Tatarts, and 4.8% are of another ethnic background. The native population are Udmurts.Leading industries include iron and steel production, car manufacturing, precision engineering, oil industry, timber industry, woodworking and food industry. Cattle breeding for diary and milk industries and poultry production are also well developed.

In 2010, Izhesvk turned 250. The city started as ironworks and workers settlement created upon a decree of Empress Elizabeth. Today Izhevsk is the capital of the Udmurt Republic with the population of over 615,000 people, a large industrial and cultural

Museums

Izhmash Factory Museumis located in the former monetarystorehouse of Izhevsk Gun Factory(XIXcentury), now the Izhmash Group, bearer of four state awards. The museum exhibits firelocks, cold weapon of the XIX century (broadswords, spears, battle axes, pikes and sabres), breech-loading and repeating rifles. There is a big collection of modern weapon: hunting guns, carbines and biathlon rifles. The museum has acollection of famous Izh motorbikes. Next to the museum there is a monument toIzhevsk gunsmiths.

Olimpic Champion Galina Kulakova Museumis located 15 km away from Izhevsk. Galina Kulakova is an Honored Master of Sports, four-time winner of the Olympic gold, nine-time winner of the World Championship, and the fist winner of the FIS Cross Country World Cup.The museum exhibits Kulakova’s awards and medals, her skiing equipment and photographs. A film about her sports achievements is shown.

Ludorvai Architectural and Ethnographic Museumis located 17 km away from Izhevsk. It is a unique architectural and ethnographic complex featuring the history, culture and life of Udmurts. Tourists have a chance to see a working windmill of the XX century, homes of the southern and central Udmurts (house, two-storey storehouse, kuala - the Udmurt family sanctuary, klet - the adjacent utility room, cattle barn, korotnik - men’s workshop, banya, etc.). There are collections of clothes, blacksmith works, embroideries, fabrics and beekeeping tools.

M. T. Kalashnikov Museum and Exhibition Small Arms ComplexThe exhibition is devoted to the life and work of the great design engineerM. T. Kalashnikov. The exhibition also tells you about Izhevsk gun makers, Izhevsk enterprises and leading Russian museums.The museum has an Internet cafe, aconference hall, a shooting galleryand a cafe.

Kuzebai Gerd Ethnic MuseumThe museum is located in the political and cultural center of Izhevsk. It occupies the facilities of the former Arsenal of Izhevsk Gun Factory (early XIX century). This is the largest museum in the republic. Its collections of archaeology, ethnography and guns are of world importance. The museum presents an integral picture of the region’s history and culture from the VIII millennium B. C. to the XXI century.

UR Museum of Fine ArtsThe museum has a unique collection of fine arts works that trace the development of arts in Udmurtia. The collection includes paintings, sculp-tures and works of craftsmen.

Cathedrals Theaters

Alexander Nevsky’s Cathedral

was built in 1818-1823 as per the designof St. Andrew’s Cathedral in Kronshtadt(architect A. D. Zakharov). Before 1917, there was a school board and aSunday school for boys from the Gun Factory. In 1929 the cathedral was closed upon the requirement of the Violent Atheists Union. From 1930, the cathedral was used as a club and a cin-ema. In 1990 it was given back to theChristian community. It received the status of the cathedral in 1994.

Saint Mikhail’s Cathedralis the main Orthodox church in Udmurtia. It was built on the place of the Holy Trinity Chapel (1765). The cathedral was built as per the design of the architect Ivan Charushin from 1897 to 1907. In the Soviet time the cathedral was occupied by the Regional Museum of Local History. On April 8, 1937 the cathedral was blown and destroyed completely upon the decision of the Council of People’s Commissars.Works to restore to the cathedral to itsoriginal view began in 2004 on the money raised by the people of Udmurtia. In 2007 the Patriarch of All Russia Alexi II blessed the renewed cathedral and performed the first liturgy.

The Holy Trinity Cathedralwas built in 1812-1814 to replace awooden chapel (architectsI. T. Kokovikhin and I. A. Caharushin). The construction coincided with the construction of Izhevsk Gun Factory. To celebrate the 100th anniversary, the church got a three-layer bell tower, but in 1928 the church was closed and the four ton bell was thrown down. Almost all priests were put to prison and shot in 1937-38. The new image of the cathedral appeared in 1985-1991. Today the cathedral hosts the diocesanadministration and a Sunday school.

The State Ethnic Theateris located in the city center, in its historic part. The first performance was shown in 1931. The repertoire includes works by Russian and world classics, the Udmurt authors I. Gavrilov, M. Petrov, M. Sadovnikov, etc. The troupe includes six genera-tions of graduates from Russia’s best theater colleges: A. N. Ostrovsky Theater College, B. V. Shchukin Theater College, M. S. Shchepkin Theater College, etc. The theater has staged about 500 plays. The building was renovated in 2005-2008, and now the theater has opened its doors again to spectators who love and cherish the ethnic theatrical art.

V. T. Korolenko Drama Theaterwas built in 1935. The theater is located in the city center. The hall seats 760 spectators. Today’s repertoire includes The Marriage of Figaro after Beaumarchais, Zoika’s Flat after Bulgakov, Barin, Polina and the Cock after Leskov and other plays.The troupe includes over 10 Honored Actors of Russia and People’s Artists of Udmurtia.

UR Puppet Theater was built in 1931. It is located in the city center. The theater has staged over 270 plays for children and 25 for adults. More than 2,000 puppets have been made. The children’s favorite performances are The Little Stork and the Scarecrow, A New Story of the Little Red Riding-hood, The Old-fashioned Marvels. The Puppet Theater is the Udmurt Komsomol Prize Winner (1980) and the Udmurt Republic State Award Winner (1993).

The Udmurt Republic Theatre of Opera and BalletThe theatre is 26 years old. It is located in the Central Square. The theatre mainly stages classical operasand ballets. The repertoire includes Eugene Onegin and The Swan Lake by P. I. Tchaikovsky, some operasby Verdi, Dargomyzhsky, etc. Every May the theatre provides a venue for P. I. Tchaikovsky musical festivalthat brings together leading symphony orchestras and ballet dancers from Russia and the whole world.

Park Inn Izhevsk is the only international hotel in Izhevsk. It

is situated in the Central Square next to the Theater of

Opera and Ballet andM. T. Kalashnikov Museum,

Izhevsk Zoo is the most modern zoo in Russia. There are large open-air cages for animals, a cafe, a playground and souvenir shops. The zoo has about 300 birds and over 100 mammals. There are pools and artificial ponds for aquatic mammals and birds. The zoo has become the new home to endangered species listed in the Red Book. The zoo follows the landscape and zoographic principles and features the areas of the White North, the Pond, the Taiga Riches, the Far East and the Udmurt Village.

State Circus of UdmurtiaThe new modern building of the circus welcomed the first guests in September

2003. The circus is one of the best in Russia. It has the latest machines and high quality sound and lightning equipment. The circus complex includes the Arena

Hotel. Every year Izhevsk hosts the International Circus Art Festival. The festival’sregular participants are the Zapashny brothers, T.and A.Philatovs, Mikhail

Bagdasarov and other famous circus performers.

Sports and leisure centres

Central HotelThe hotel is in the center of Izhevsk next to the Government Building and the UR President’s Residence. The town is located 55 km away from Izhevsk. It stretches along the picturesque bank of Votkinsk Pond. The town was founded in 1757 as a settlement around Votkinsk Ironworks. Today it is the town’s major enterprise, now known as Votkinsky Plant, which manufacturesmissiles, including the Topol-M ballistic missiles. Votkinsk is a birth-place of the great Russian composer P. I. Tchaikovsky. He was born in Votkinsk in 1840 and spent the first eight years there.

The main tourist attraction in Votkinsk is P. I. Tchaikovsky Mansion Museum, a memorial and architectural complex of restored Gospodskaya Street, outbuildings of the XIX century and the house of the mining principal in the center. The exhibition features the childhood of P. I. Tchaikovsky and includes authentic personal and family belongings. Every May Izhevsk and Votkinsk host the annual P. I. Tchaikovsky musical festival.

SarapulSarapul is an industrial and cultural center in the southeast of the republic. The city was founded in 1780. In the past it was an uyezd city, the center of the Vyatka Governorate, described by the famous Russian writers M. Ye. Saltykov-Shchedrin and D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak. The merchant city in the past, Sarapul became an industrial center in the Soviet time. Leather and footwear industries are traditionally well developed. It is worth mentioning that Sarapul has a very good chocolate factory withits products well known outside Udmurtia. In Sarapul the tourists visit the museum of the Kama Region History and see the exhibition in the former dacha of the merchant Bashenin. During the city tour, they will learn a lot of interesting facts of Sarapul history and will see its river port.

GlazovThe town is located on the left bank of the Cheptsa River, 180 km away from Izhevsk. There is a story that the town was named by Catherine II when she saw the town plan which resembled an eye . Glazov became a town in 1780. From 1796 to 1818 the town police head was P. F. Tchaikovsky, the grandfather of the Russian composer P. I. Tchaikovsky. Glazov was a point on the way of Decembrists (1825) from Petersburg to Siberia.Today Glazov is a modern industrial town. The main historic attraction is the Idnakar Reserve Museum. It is the only archaeological museum and reserve in Udmurtia featuring artifacts from Idnakar, a living place of Finno-Ugric tribes in the IX-XIII centuries. The museum is a unique sample of a Middle Age castle in the forest belt of the Eastern Europe.

Igra District Sharkan DistrictThe Sharkan village was first mentioned in the XVII century. It is the most beautiful part of Udmurtia. Everyone who has ever been there calls the place “small Switzerland.” This is a place of springs, wonderful hill forests and beautiful flowery meadows. There is a natural park in the Sharkan District. The native population of the district are Udmurts. They preserve their ethnic customs and traditions, language and culture.
