CONSISTENT TOOL PERFORMANCE—LONG AND RELIABLE TOOL LIFE

With an increased demand for just in time deliveries (JIT) and shorter lead

time, it is of utmost importance that the tool life is predictable with a long and

reliable performance. This is also a prerequisite to reduce, your down time,

cost for tool maintenance and optimize machine utilization. This gives an

optimal tooling economy and a competitive production cost.

Uddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra properties offer very good combination of wear

resistance and ductility. This makes it possible for consistent tool performance

for demanding cold work applications such as blanking and forming of auste-

nitic stainless steels and advanced high strength steels (AHSS) where a

combination of abrasive, adhesive or mixed wear resistance is needed in

combination with resistance to chipping and cracking.

MACHINABILITY

The tool making process is a very important link in the tooling sequence. In

order to achieve a long and reliable tool performance the quality of the tool

in terms of surface finish is extremely important. Uddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra

offers a very good machinability and grindability compared to other high

alloyed PM- tool steels, giving the best conditions for an excellent tool quality.

This is the result of the well balanced chemistry and the SuperClean produc-

tion route.

High wear resistance is often associated withlow ductility and vice-versa. However, in manycases for optimal tool performance both highwear resistance and ductility are essential.

Uddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra is a powdermetallurgical cold work tool steel offering anextremely good combination of wear resistan-ce and ductility for high performance tools.

Toolmaking with highly alloyed tool steels hastraditionally created problems with machiningand heat treatment when compared withlower alloyed grades, this then often leads toincreased toolmaking costs.

Due to our carefully balanced alloying andthe powder metallurgical manufacturing pro-cess, Uddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra has bettermachinability than the tool steel grade AISI D2.

One major advantage with UddeholmVanadis 4 Extra is that the dimensional stabilityafter hardening and tempering is much betterthan for all known high performance coldwork tool steels. This means, for example, thatUddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra is a tool steel whichis very suitable for CVD coating.

Heat treatmentSoft annealingProtect the steel and heat through to 900°C(1650°F). Cool in the furnace at 10°C (20°F)per hour to 750°C (1380°F), then freely in air.

Stress relievingAfter rough machining the tool should beheated through to 650°C (1200°F), holdingtime 2 hours. Cool slowly to 500°C (930°F),then freely in air.

HardeningPre-heating temperature: 600–700°C (1110–1290°F).

Sub-zero treatmentPieces requiring maximum dimensional stabilitycan be sub-zero treated as follows:Immediately after quenching the piece shouldbe sub-zero treated to between -70 and -80°C(-95 to -110°F), soaking time 3–4 hours,followed by tempering.

The tempering temperature should belowered 25°C (50°F) in order to get thedesired hardness when a high temperaturetemper is performed.

Avoid intricate shapes as there will be risk ofcracking.

Surface treatmentSome cold work tool steels are given a surfacetreatment in order to reduce friction andincrease wear resistance. The most commonlyused treatments are nitriding and surfacecoating with wear resistant layers produced viaPVD and CVD.

The high hardness and toughness togetherwith a good dimensional stability makesUddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra ideal as a substratesteel for various surface coatings.

NitridingNitriding gives a hard surface layer that isresistant to wear and erosion.

Uddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra is normally hightemperature tempered at around 525°C(980°F). This means that the nitriding tempera-ture used should not exceed 500–525°C (930–980°F). Ion nitriding at a temperature belowthe tempering temperature used is preferred.The surface hardness after nitriding is approxi-mately 1150 HV0,2 kg.

The thickness of the layer should be chosento suit the application in question.

PVDPhysical vapour deposition, PVD, is a methodof applying a wear resistant coating at tem-peratures between 200–500°C (390–930°F).

CVDChemical vapour deposition, CVD, is used forapplying wear resistant surface coatings at atemperature of around 1000°C (1830°F). It isrecommended that the tools should beseparately hardened and tempered in a vacuumfurnace after surface treatment.

MachiningrecommendationsThe cutting data below are to be consideredas guiding values which must be adapted toexisting local conditions.

The recommendations, in following tables, arevalid for Uddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra in softannealed condition to ~230 HB.

Electrical-dischargemachining—EDMIf EDM is performed in the hardened andtempered condition, finish with “fine-sparking”,i.e. low current, high frequency. For optimalperformance the EDM’d surface should thenbe ground/polished and the tool retemperedat approx. 25°C (45°F) lower than the originaltempering temperature.

When EDM’ing larger sizes or complicatedshapes Uddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra should betempered at high temperatures, above 500°C(930°F).

The Powder Metallurgy processIn the powder metallurgy process nitrogen gas is used toatomise the melted steel into small droplets, or grains.Each of these small grains solidifies quickly and there islittle time for carbides to grow. These powder grains arethen compacted to an ingot in a hot isostatic press (HIP)at high temperature and pressure. The ingot is then rolledor forged to steel bars by conventional methods.

The resulting structure is completely homogeneoussteel with randomly distributed small carbides, harmlessas sites for crack initiation but still protecting the toolfrom wear.

Large slag inclusions can take the role as sites for crackinitiation instead. Therefore, the powder metallurgicalprocess has been further developed in stages to improvethe cleanliness of the steel. Powder steel from UddeholmTooling is today of the third generation. It is marketedunder the brand SUPERCLEAN3 and is considered thecleanest powder metallurgy tool steel product on themarket.

HEAT TREATMENT

Prior to delivery all of the different bar materials aresubjected to a heat treatment operation, either as softannealing or hardening and tempering. These operationsprovide the steel with the right balance between hardnessand toughness.

MACHINING

Before the material is finished and put into stock, we alsorough machine the bar profiles to required size and exacttolerances. In the lathe machining of large dimensions, thesteel bar rotates against a stationary cutting tool. In peel-ing of smaller dimensions, the cutting tools revolve aroundthe bar.

To safeguard our quality and guarantee the integrity ofthe tool steel we perform both surface- and ultrasonicinspections on all bars. We then remove the bar ends andany defects found during the inspection.
