Less than two months after celebrating our 50th anniversary in September 2008, national economic conditions began to impact our bottom line. In the face of several cuts in funding, we took steps to remain financially secure: eliminating 6% of our workforce by not filling vacancies and cutting other important expense items to trim 4% from our overall budget. We are proud to say that client care and safety remained our highest priority and was not compromised. Yet, frankly, we are worried that our community’s safety net is seriously strained. Forecasts for coming budget years paint an uncertain economic picture. As we face hard choices still to come, we hope the community will continue to make the most economical choice and support our most vulnerable neighbors. Beyond the facts and figures of an annual report are people—clients, staff, stakeholders who make UCS what it is: a very successful community mental health and developmental services agency. Working together, we can create a strengthened community where people feel valued, empowered, and purposeful.

CHiLD anD famiLy SerViCeS Nearly two of every five people we serve are children. With encouragement, nurturing, skill building, and love our Infant Toddler Center helped children develop language and social skills and grow into amazing toddlers with super personalities. The enriching environment at Head Start enabled preschool-age children to develop by doing and learn from play. Big Brothers Big Sisters expanded mentoring matches this year, launching a new program in the Northshire and filling the lives of grade-school children with supportive guidance. The promise of true emotional health for all children and their families is a vision that UCS works continually to achieve. Among many successes last year, a youth group, “Teens of Bennington” stands out. UCS counselors worked with the teens to foster their abilities to identify, plan and create programs for themselves, their peers, and their families. The teens developed skills, connected to the community, and created their own space, complete with personal safety. Teens of Bennington also developed supportive mentoring relationships to help them achieve their plans, including teen band night at Lake Paran, a food drive, a family picnic, and holiday events.

CLiniCaL SUPPOrt Every seventh person we serve needs clinical support for developmental disabilities, mental illness, or psychiatric emergencies. Clients can make substantial gains in a year. For some people with developmental disabilities, communication is challenging. Helen, a nonverbal client, only talked about three things. UCS staff introduced her to a voice output communication device and focused her on using words. Now she speaks many words and sentences clearly. Sandra came to UCS, suffering from one of the most immobilizing series of traumatic experiences of any client and she was frequently hospitalized. At UCS, she found the trust and acceptance to make changes. Now she is seldom hospitalized and has made remarkable progress learning how to take control and assert herself. Several other clients started the year with mental illness so severe they were unable to care for themselves. With psychiatric support, they stabilized their illnesses and relearned independent living skills we all need for a satisfying life. Now they can balance their own checkbooks.

COUnSeLing More than half our adult clients seek counseling to restore balance in their lives. Mark, a successful and financially independent person, received counseling to help with stress, life changes, and other issues. Counseling enabled him to rededicate himself to family and work. Another client, Laura, sought counseling to stop taking pills. She felt her addiction was controlling her life. In counseling, she addressed underlying anxieties, identified ways to reduce them, and stopped using pills. For Laura, getting clean led to an explosion of creativity and drive that carried her into a more fulfilling life. In addition to counseling for stress, family issues, and substance abuse, we support people traumatized by events in their lives. Ellen, a teenager, began counseling after she had been sexually molested by a family member. Through counseling, Ellen moved beyond her trauma and rebuilt her self-esteem. Ellen’s aunt disclosed that she, too, was molested as a child and concealed it her entire life. With counseling, she was able to reverse a half-century of attitudes about victimization. Now the family is closer, healthier, and stronger.
