A heat pump is suitable for most properties and is able to convert 1kW of electricity into 3.2kW of useful heat for the home. Even on the coldest days, a heat pump can harvest renewable energy from outdoor air and transfer it to inside the home to heat radiators and hot water even in temperatures of up to -20C.

You only need to look at the comparison table below to see how

cost effective and energy saving a heat pump can be whilst also reducing your carbon footprint.

Paynes are currently in partnership with Mitsubishi Electric and the award winning Ecodan air source heat pump.

There is currently a limited offer for grants of up to £4000 immediately available on all heat pump

installations that are completed by the 31st March 2013. In addition Paynes are currently offering a £200 discount to Uckfield Matters readers who request a survey and subsequent installation of an air source heat pump. It could be the perfect time to not only put a halt to the rising cost of heating your home but also remove the inconvenience of having to fill your oil tank or replenish your LPG supply and get rid of the eyesore tank taking up valuable space in your garden!

Why pay over the oddsfor your heating? If you live in a home that relies on oil, LPG or electricity to heat your home the chances are your bills are spiralling upwards at a scary pace. Unfortunately it doesn’t look set to change! But you can change and put a stop to paying the huge fluctuations in oil and other fuel costs by installing an air source heat pump.

Welcome to March’s Issue Contents

My goodness - one minute we’re ankle deep in snow, the next, welcoming snowdrops appear. Daffodils and lambs can’t be too far away then. So are Good Friday and Easter Sunday, to remind us that life transcends the physical universe whatever your religious beliefs are (or aren’t).

Welcome to Doug’s Diggings – a new monthly column for beginners and old hands both. We’d love to hear how you enjoyed it, and of course whether you have a gardening question. Just email or drop us a line.

The opening of the Meads Medical Centre is a welcome step up to increased medical care for Uckfield residents.

Oh yes – one last celebration this month – don’t forget Mother’s Day!

All the best,

Sheila, Chris & Doug

I want to inspire you to grow your own baby leaf salads. “Baby leaf” just means tender leaves that you can pick individually, rather than as a whole head. A wide selection of seed is sold in supermarkets and garden centres, so why not for the tiny price of a packet of seeds have your favourites growing right outside your door or a small area in your flower bed. You can even grow them in pots on your kitchen windowsill!

Plant the seed thinly in a fine tilth or use a fresh bag of compost if growing in pots. Cover lightly with compost and keep moist but not too wet. There’s no need to thin them. I have planted some 12”pots this year - they are easier to look after and water. By seeding a new pot or a new short row every 2 to 3 weeks you can harvest a regular supply till October.

Get the kids involved- it could be their project and a very satisfying one. It’s a good way to start them eating greens!

There are many different seed mixtures for sale, some ready to harvest in just 25 days. March plantings benefit from being covered with a cloche; outdoor sowing should wait until all danger of frost is passed.

I am growing straight varieties, mild rocket (I like the peppery taste) spinach, watercress. There are green and red cos, lollo varieties, mizuna, bok choy and mustards to name a few. I can then harvest whatever mix I want. How about some coriander?

Next month we will look at the harvesting. GOOD LUCK

Doug’s DiggingsHello - and welcome to my new column! It’s officially spring this month and I trust you have your digging and plant moving all done. Hoe regularly and you will easily handle the weeds before they become too established.

R O T A R Y C L U B

First of all, we recently donated £400.00 to Chestnut Tree House. This is a hospice which cares for children aged 0-19, with life-limiting illness, as well as providing support for their families. In the 10 years the hospice has been open, it has looked after young people from across Sussex, including some from Uckfield and district. Of this money, half came from our charity fund, and the rest was from the raffle at January’s Seniors’ Party, held at the College. On the subject of the Party, you can see in the photograph the skill and grace of Keith Allen and his dancers, who entertained guests during the afternoon.

We were approached towards the end of last year by the local Air Cadets Unit, looking for help to equip members involved in an expedition later this year towards the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. We were delighted to give them £390.00 to buy two specialist tents their cadets needed, and will be interested to follow their progress.

Our third recent donation was £100.00 to AgeUK. There is still money available, so if you know of a local charity or need which could benefit from Rotary Club support, please pass their details on to us.

You are probably already aware of our ‘Making Dreams Come True’ award, which offers £1,000 to a local young adult aged between 16 and 25, to enable them to fulfil their ambition. We have already received some applications for the 2013 award, but you have until the end of March to submit your idea as to how £1,000 could help make your

dream come true. The details, and the application form, are available at www.uckfield-rotary.org.uk or www.uckfieldfm.org.uk. Students at UCTC can collect the form at the College. Otherwise you can get details from the Club Secretary. So, if you are aged 16-25 and you have a dream, what’s to stop you applying? You never know where it might take you.

The money outlined above has all gone to local charities, which is what we aim to do with money collected locally. However, we also support the Rotary Foundation, a world-wide charitable organisation which is maintained by

contributions from Rotarians and others across the world. Foundation funds a huge range of humanitarian and developmental projects in many countries, some of which have been described in previous articles. Members of our Club donate an annual sum to Foundation, in addition to their subscriptions, to ensure that we balance meeting local need with supporting Rotary’s wider international charitable efforts.

For more information about the Rotary Club of Uckfield, please contact the Club Secretary, on 01825 761145.

Last month we thanked you for money you had generously donated to the Rotary Club’s Christmas collection – this month we can talk about giving some of it away.

Money comes in – money goes out!

This Spring special birthday parties can be booked at Nutley Windmill. The children can investigate the windmill, then grind flour and cook dough over a camp

fire. They can do the exciting things children used to do. A charge of £50 will be made per party.

The Preservation Society has a charity shop in High Street, Uckfield (The old Red Cross Charity Shop) and would welcome any donations of saleable items such as clothes, games and unwanted gifts. They also own Bridge Cottage which is a Wealden Hall House located next to the River Uck at the bottom of the High Street – thought to be the oldest house in Uckfield. Please see the website for details of opening hours.

Nutley WindmillNutley Windmill standing in the beautiful Ashdown Forest is the last Open Trestle Post Mill in Sussex and one of only 5 left in the country. The Crowborough committee of CRUK was formed 25 years ago and, in that time, it has raised more than £250,000.

It costs just £250 to sponsor a table at the lunch, which is this year being held on Wednesday 12 June at the East Sussex National.

Sponsors will have their company logo included on the menu, as well as on screens at the lunch and on their sponsored table. The high profile lunch will also be promoted across the local media and through social media. Many sponsors also take the opportunity to bring guests along to sit on their table. Tickets will cost around £28.00 and tables seat 10 people.

“We would be most grateful for your support,” says Angela Ward, member of the Crowborough committee of CRUK and Manager, PR Services at The Marketing Eye in Uckfield, which assists the event with its marketing. “As the leading cancer research charity in the UK, Cancer Research UK is able to channel all funds raised to the maximum advantage in helping our scientists around the country with their vital work.”

Supporters already signed-up include the Uckfield-based law firm, Dawson Hart, which is sponsoring the tea/coffee.

Where Does the Easter Bunny Come From?Chocolate? Bunnies? Painted eggs? How did these come to be associated with an important Christian religious time?

Some research has traced the origin of the celebration — and the origin of the Easter Bunny —to 13th-century pre-Christian Germany, when people worshiped several gods and goddesses, each of whom had a certain purpose. The deity Eostra was the goddess of spring and fertility, and feasts were held in her honour at the beginning

of spring. Her symbol was the rabbit because of the animal’s high reproduction rate.Spring has always symbolized both new life and rebirth, and eggs were an ancient symbol of fertility. According to some sources, Easter eggs represented Jesus’ resurrection. However, this association came after the 15th century, when Roman Catholicism had become Germany’s main religion, merged with already ingrained pagan beliefs. The first Easter Bunny legend was documented in the 1500s. By 1680,

the first story about a rabbit laying eggs and hiding them in a garden was published. These legends were taken to the United States in the 1700s, when German immigrants settled in Pennsylvania Dutch country, and soon spread across America.

The tradition of making nests for the rabbit to lay its eggs in soon followed. Eventually, nests became decorated baskets and colourful eggs were swapped for candy, treats and other small gifts.

As to the Easter bonnets – well, that’s another story!

East Sussex amateur performers to star in the world premiere of a new opera at Glyndebourne Seventy-five talented East Sussex residents will appear on the main stage at the world famous Glyndebourne opera house on 7 March, in the world premiere of a new opera called Imago.

Imago, which is set partly in a virtual reality, will premiere with a community cast of 90 amateur performers from across the South East recruited via open auditions. Participants range in age from teenagers to those in their 70s and will perform alongside professionals on the main stage and in the orchestra pit, in a project designed to develop their talent.

The oldest performer in the company is Brighton based Albert Hall, 73, who said:

“I began performing at a very early age, just seven, and having been

an opera fanatic all my life, the opportunity to appear on the stage at Glyndebourne was just irresistible. The experience has changed my life. I retired from singing in 2011 and Imago is yet another ‘farewell’ appearance for me. It has been said that I have had more than Sinatra, but this will definitely be my last!”

Other East Sussex participants come from Lewes, Hastings, Eastbourne and Uckfield as well as many smaller towns and villages across the county.

Imago premieres at Glyndebourne on 7 March 2013 with two further performances on the 8 and 9 March. Tickets are available through the Glyndebourne Box Office on 01273 813813 or online at www.glyndebourne.com.

Wealden District Council will be changing the way waste and recycling services are provided during 2013 - this will affect all residents in Wealden including Forest Row.

The new service will involve some changes to your existing bins and containers. Full details will be sent out before the new service starts at the end of July, but basically:

1) Your refuse bin will continue to be used as the bin for everyday household waste that cannot be recycled.

2) Your current bin for green waste will become your bin for ‘mixed recycling’ taking paper, cans, foil, aerosols, beverage cartons, plastic bottles plus a wider range of plastic items. Your cardboard will also go into this bin for ‘mixed recycling’.

3) Your current blue box/caddy will be used for recycling glass jars and bottles. This will also be picked up from the kerbside by the Council.

4) If you want to continue receiving a Free Green Garden Waste Collection service (grass clippings, hedge trimmings, weeds etc. but not cardboard), YOU MUST REGISTER FOR THIS SERVICE BY 31st MARCH 2013. Wealden’s registration begins on 25 February. An additional brown coloured wheelie bin for green garden waste only will then be delivered shortly before the new service starts in July.

If you don’t want a bin for green garden waste then you do not need to do anything. If you miss the registration deadline then you may have to wait several months for your green garden waste collections to resume.

The additional wheelie bin for garden waste will become your third wheelie bin. You may want to consider if you do need a third wheelie bin or not. If you rarely have garden waste it may be easier to compost it at home or take it to the tip on the odd occasion you have garden waste rather than have the third bin.

There are many good composters that can be bought to help you compost at home - some will even take food remains and are highly effective.

Details of all this and more can be found on www.wealden.gov.uk/register or 01323 443322.

“This Green Gym exercise, which has to take place in the winter to avoid disturbing wildlife, is good for the environment and those that take part” says Martyn Stenning , Lime Aid’s Chairman. “Lime Tree Avenue is a significant land mark in Uckfield, and a much loved place for Uckfield Community Technical College students and local residents. In multiple ownership and within no Council’s responsibility, Lime Aid have taken the management of this vertical nature reserve under their wing. Pruning growth from the base of the trees revitalises the trunk and higher lateral growth, leading to healthier trees. Lime tree flowers are an important source of nectar for bees and other insects, and the trees themselves provide nesting places for many species of birds.”

Wedding Fayre A Great Success!

The Lime Aid Task Force were in action revitalising the 100 Lime Tree Avenue trees

The work force included Martyn, Timothy and Vivien Stenning, Andrew and Greg Ledward, Wendy Tagg, Chris Accleton and Lucy Dann (both from University of Sussex), and several more willing participants. The weather was perfect making it an all-round successful day.
