Use Case Model UML Notation

Business Actor:

AnActoris a user of the system; usercan mean a human user, a machine, or even another system or subsystem in themodel. Anything that interacts with the system from the outside or system boundary is termed an Actor.Actors aretypically associated with Use Cases.

Actors can use the system through a graphical user interface, through a batch interface or through some other media. AnActor's interaction with a Use Case is documented in a Use Case scenario, which details the functions a system mustprovide to satisfy the user requirements.

Actors also represent the role of a user in Sequence Diagrams.

OMG UML Specification

The OMG UML specification (UML Superstructure Specification, v2.1.1, p. 582) states:

"An actor models a type of role played by an entity that interacts with the subject (e.g. by exchanging signals and data),but which is external to the subject. ... Actors may represent roles played by human users, external hardware, or othersubjects. Note that an actor does not necessarily represent a specific physical entity but merely a particular facet (i.e.,role) of some entity that is relevant to the specification of its associated use cases. Thus, a single physical instance mayplay the role of several different actors and, conversely, a given actor may be played by multiple different instances."

An include connection indicates that the source element includes the functionality of the target element. Includeconnections are used in Use Case Models to reflect that one Use Case includes the behavior of another. Use an includerelationship to avoid having the same subset of behavior in many Use Cases; this is similar to delegation used in Classmodels.

An Extend connection is used to indicate that an element extends the behavior of another. Extensions are used in UseCase models to indicate that one Use Case (optionally) extends the behavior of another. An extending Use Case oftenexpresses alternate flows.



"This relationship specifies that the behavior of a use case may be extended by the behavior of another (usuallysupplementary) use case. The extension takes place at one or more specific extension points defined in the extended usecase. Note, however, that the extended use case is defined independently of the extending use case and is meaningfulindependently of the extending use case. On the other hand, the extending use case typically defines behavior that maynot necessarily be meaningful by itself. Instead, the extending use case defines a set of modular behavior increments thataugment an execution of the extended use case under specific conditions. Note that the same extending use case can

A source object implements orRealizes its destination object. Realize is used in a Use Case, Component orRequirements diagram to express traceability and completeness in the model. A business process or Requirement isrealized by one or more Use Cases, which in turn are realized by some Classes, which in turn are realized by aComponent, and so on. Mapping Requirements, Classes and such across the design of your system, up through thelevels of modeling abstraction, ensures the big picture of your system remembers and reflects all the little pictures anddetails that constrain and define it.



"A Realization signifies that the client set of elements are an implementation of the supplier set, which serves as the

specification. The meaning of 'implementation' is not strictly defined, but rather implies a more refined or elaborate form inrespect to a certain modeling context. It is possible to specify a mapping between the specification and implementationelements, although it is not necessarily computable."
