Welcome to the University for the Creative Arts – I’d like to congratulate you on receiving your offer and hope that you decide to pursue your creative education with us.

From your very first day here at UCA, we will strive to provide everything you would expect from an arts university, whichever campus you’ve chosen – an inspiring study environment, high-calibre facilities, friendly and professional support, and exceptional teaching quality. Your time with us may be one of the biggest – and most important – investments that you will make in your own personal development, so our focus is on giving you everything you need to explore and fulfil your creative potential.

This year we became the highest ranked arts university in the London and South East region in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017 and The Guardian University Guide 2017 – not only are we proud of our achievements here, but we want you to be equally proud to be a part of our unique community. From your initial few weeks when you settle into your campus, start your course and begin to make new friends, to your graduation and continuing career or study progression, you will always be an important part of our creative community. We’re here to support your development, encourage you to push your own boundaries, and enable you to explore your potential in your chosen specialist field.

We hope your time with us will be memorable, fun and inspirational, so we’ve made the initial process of enrolment and registration as straightforward as possible. To get you off to a smooth start, you’ll find all the essential information you need to know in this guide. I’d also recommend getting to know your Students’ Union in your first few weeks as there’s always plenty going on which will help you settle into student life and make new friends.

Welcome

When it comes to your studies, you’ll receive a course welcome guide over the summer which will contain details of your summer project, what you should bring with you when you start the course, and a timetable for your enrolment and induction week. Further information specific to your course will then be provided during your first few days at UCA. If there’s anything you’d like to know before you arrive, please contact the Campus Registry on the campus where you’ll be studying.

Finally, I would like to wish you every success as you join our creative community and take the next steps towards your future career.

The campus

With over 2,000 students, Farnham is the biggest of our campuses and has an incredibly strong community feel. The campus is home to the James Hockey and Foyer Galleries, which host a range of exhibitions by visiting artists as well as our staff, students and graduates. Several research centres are also based on campus, including the Centre for Sustainable Design and the Crafts Study Centre, which is a purpose-built museum and gallery dedicated to crafts. Our Farnham campus has an extensive range of traditional and contemporary facilities designed to meet the requirements of a vast range of creative subjects, giving you the freedom to explore and discover your true potential.

UCA Farnham

The city

Farnham is a culture-rich market town on the edge of the Surrey Hills. According to a recent poll, residents here have a better quality of life than in any other rural area. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, Farnham boasts a long-standing association with the creative industries and has a variety of independent boutiques along with several art galleries and craft shops. In the town, you’ll find a wide range of pubs and restaurants that offer great deals for students.

Venues such as the Farnham Maltings support the local creative community by hosting a varied programme of comedy, theatre, cinema, craft and music events. Our Students’ Union provides nightclub entertainment throughout the week, and if you fancy a night out in the city, you’re less than an hour away from London by train.

STRONG, CREATIVE AND INSPIRED – we are UCA Students’ Union.

UCASU is led by you - the students. Each campus is represented by an elected Campus President, and two Campus Executive Officers, which means you influence everything we do as a Union.

We have over 500 students involved in a range of clubs and societies, from Basketball to LGBT+ Society to the Radio and Podcasting Society. We also organise events in the campus bars, and work with local venues to get students the best deals on nights out in their area.

We’re here to make student life at UCA exciting, varied, and fulfilling. There are plenty of ways to get involved with us, whether you want to enjoy the events we host, change something about your student experience, or just become a bigger part of your campus community. Part of what we do is to meet with students directly, to discuss the issues affecting you. This helps us to collaborate with you for events and campaigns, as well as provide support and information about personal or academic concerns.

Though we’re an independent organisation, we’re connected to the highest levels of the University. Our Campus Presidents represent your interests at every level, in every decision made by the University. We’ve won victories like the pause on rising tuition fees, and student input on the new campus common spaces.

UCA Students’ Union

Our Students’ Union exists to represent every single student at UCA – by listening to you we are able to make your time at University the best it can be.

Students’ Union welcome

There are plenty of ways to get involved with the Students’ Union; you can join or run a club or society, become a member of the Academic or a Campus Exec, join a liberation group, or become a Course Rep. All give you the opportunity to meet new friends and can help to improve your experience of living and studying at UCA.

There’s plenty on offer, including a range of information, advice and guidance on academic and welfare issues too. If for any reason things aren’t going perhaps quite as you’d expected, the SU are always here to support you and get you back on track.

You’ll get a warm welcome in the Students’ Union, where everyone will always do their best to help you with any issue that you have.

Fresher’s Week

Fresher’s Week is designed to give you the best possible introduction to student life. It’s held right at the beginning of term and is your chance to get to know some of your fellow new students, enjoy the events put on by the SU, and generally have a good time before your course starts. Wristbands are available to buy before you get here, they’ll get you into all events on all four campuses and come in three different levels.

For a full list of Fresher’s Week events, keep an eye on our SU website and social media pages.

What’s the best thing about your campus?

Becky: The best thing about the Farnham campus is how social it is. I loved the fact that it didn’t take long to start to get to know people.

Silviu: Epsom is so close to Central London, it’s really great for my studies.

Ellie: The creative community here in Canterbury is one of the things I like best about campus. You also get the chance for your work to leave the studio and explore its possibilities in different spaces around the University.

What was your favourite thing about studying at UCA?

Becky: I really loved how creative everyone is and how accepting they are too, I’ve never been somewhere that I fit in so well naturally.

Ellie: I really enjoyed working in the art studio because it’s your space that you can feel at home in, and be as creative as you want to be.

Tasmin: There’s such a great community feel between everyone, it’s a really warm and friendly place to study.

Silviu: The social side of campus life is definitely one of my favourite aspects.

Where’s the best local student hang out?

Tasmin: GK student hub, The Deep End! Students can enjoy the hub and all the events there, on top of all the events that we run through our own SU.

Silviu: The Faraday, it’s well priced and very friendly.

Becky: The Cobbett is a great pub to go to, it’s really quirky; The Mulberry on a Wednesday is also good.

What’s your favourite place on campus?

Ellie: Sitting outside on the green in the summer sunshine, lots of students love this and when the sun is out the green is packed.

Tasmin: I love walking along the Lower Third corridor and seeing all the amazing work that’s all over the walls; it’s the most colourful part of campus and it’s really inspiring.

Any top tips for new students?

Silviu: Talk to as many people as you can, really make the most of your time here.

Becky: University can be a big culture shift, but make the most of what you have access to, the first year is all about learning new things.

Tasmin: Be open to chatting to anyone when you first arrive, even if you’re quite shy or anxious, try your best to push yourself out of your comfort zone. Just remember – everyone else is in the same boat that you are!

What are the highlights of the SU calendar?

Ellie: We’re always looking at new events to put on, but one of our biggest highlights is Fresher’s Week – a whole week of events to kickstart your uni life.

Becky: We have events throughout the year, but the Halloween Ball and the Roadshow are great, and at the end of the year we have the Union Awards which are held on a boat, sailing down the River Thames!

Tasmin: I’m also super excited for our Summer Ball at the end of the year!

Ellie: We’re constantly looking for new events to put on, but one of our biggest highlights is Fresher’s Week – a whole week of events to help students settle into uni life.

Are there any special events new students should look forward to?

Tasmin: We have an event in Fresher’s Week where students from all four campuses meet up and party together; it’s a really great way to get to know students from other campuses.

Silviu: There’s a multitude of the events that are put on in the SU/Cafe back space in Epsom, they’re always a hit.

Becky: I’d say Fresher’s Week is always the best one for new students as it really gives you an introduction to student life and the university.

We caught up with the campus presidents to find out how best to make the most of the SU, UCA, and most of all, your university life.

Our full collection of books will be available to you, as well as the wide range of art and design magazines that we subscribe to.

Although you won’t be able to borrow anything until you’re fully enrolled, you’re welcome to make copies of anything in either printed or digital format, using the photocopiers and scanners that we have available.

Arriving at UCA

Arriving in a new country can be a little daunting, so to make things a little easier for you, we offer our new international and EU students the opportunity to use our Meet & Greet service.

To welcome you at the airport and greet you after your flight, we send our representatives to meet you inside the Arrival Halls at either London Heathrow or London Gatwick. They will then drive you directly to your UCA campus. Our representative will also track your flight, so they will know if your flight is delayed, and they will know what address to take you to.

Our Meet & Greet service is really simple to use – just book your place online and give us your flight details, and then we will arrange for our representative to collect you when you land. For more information, pricing and how to book, visit:

uca.ac.uk/international-study/meet-greet

If you have any questions about the Meet & Greet service, please email:

[email protected]

International information

International and EU welcome event

Our International and EU Welcome Event is a great way to meet other new students from outside the UK. We host the event each year at all four of our campuses, and find it to be a great success in forging new connections.

The event is free and includes a welcome from a member of our Leadership Team, as well as complimentary food and drink. We recommend that all new students attend as it gives you a chance to meet new people and make friends during the first week of term.

For information and dates for your particular campus, as well as to book, please visit:

uca.ac.uk/international-study/welcome

If you have any questions about the International and EU Welcome Event, email:

[email protected]

We offer international students a range of support services, available via our Gateway Services, that can help with BRP collection, visa extensions, police registration, finance, welfare and more. Please see the Library and Student Services section for further details.

Study abroad

At UCA we offer you the opportunity to study abroad as a fully recognised and accredited part of your degree course. We have strong collaborative links with partner institutions worldwide and our experienced team can help you take advantage of the opportunities available to study outside the UK.

Studying abroad can be a life-changing experience. Living in another country, you’ll experience new places, people, cultures and possibilities. You’ll develop initiative, independence, motivation and, depending on where you go, a working knowledge of another language – all qualities that employers are looking for.

There are two types of exchange options available – a funded Erasmus+ exchange or an international exchange, each of which normally lasts three to five months. If you are on an undergraduate degree, exchanges tend to take place during your second year in spring term.

We have links with around 50 partner institutions across Europe and further afield, including Australia, Canada, Japan and the USA.

For help and advice, our Study AbroadCo-ordinator is here to help you through the process and make sure that you are fully set up for your time away.

Find out more about our study abroad programme at:uca.ac.uk/study/study-abroad

Starting a new course can seem quite challenging, particularly if you’re moving away from home for the first time. However, from the moment you arrive here, you’ll be part of a diverse and tight-knit creative community.

Our Accommodation Services Office provides support and advice on any issues relating to University or private accommodation.

We also offer out-of-hours support for residents in University accommodation (which may include Residential Student Wardens and/or a Security Officer).

Residents should be aware that the Accommodation Office’s main method of communication once you’ve moved in is by email to your UCA email address.

Accommodation

Private accommodation

Details of landlords with available local private accommodation for each campus can be found at:studenttenant.com

The private rented accommodation website also offers new and existing students a forum where they can link to social media, find other students to house hunt with, and leave feedback about accommodation and landlords.

Our Accommodation Services team has produced a guide to help you find, view, choose, live in and vacate private accommodation which you may find useful, particularly if this is your first time living away from home. You can download our Student’s Guide to Private Accommodation online at:

uca.ac.uk/life-at-uca/accommodation/private-accommodation

UCA accommodation

If you’ve arranged University residential accommodation, we’ll email you with details of the arrival arrangements and online induction for accommodation four weeks before your contract starts.

When you move in you’ll be given a Welcome Pack containing the Residents’ Information Handbook, lots of other information about living in University accommodation, and some forms which you’ll need to return to the Accommodation Office.

Before beginning your studies you’ll need to enrol with us. The enrolment process is in two stages.

The first stage can be done via the Applicant Portal before you arrive. The enrolment task will be available from the week commencing21 August 2017.

You can access the Applicant Portal here:

registryonline.ucreative.ac.uk

The second part of the enrolment process will take place during your induction week once you’re with us on campus. At your enrolment session, a member of the enrolment team will check your qualifications and identification so you’ll need to bring the following with you:

– All of your original exam certificates Passport (or a driving licence AND birth certificate if you don’t have a passport)

– If you are from outside the UK, you must also bring details of your visa, if you have one.

You’ll need to complete both of these stages in order to be a fully enrolled student.

We will send you an email and a letter with information about your enrolment and induction in August.

Induction & ID Card

Your induction

Your induction is a series of sessions specific to your course, which will introduce you to life at UCA and provide you with the information you need to know about the facilities and resources.

Your Induction and Enrolment Timetable, which will be sent to you via email in August, will provide more information about when and where these sessions will take place.

You’ll receive your full course timetable during your induction week.

Your Student ID Card

Over the summer, an ‘ID photo upload’ task will be available on the Applicant Portal for you to upload a photograph for your Student ID Card. We encourage you to make use of this option, as it allows you to select your preferred photograph. Unlike a UK passport picture you are allowed to smile!

Once you’ve enrolled, this photo will be used to create your Student ID Card, which will give you access to our buildings and facilities. ID Cards must be worn and be visible at all times whilst on UCA premises.

If you can’t upload a photo, there will be an option to have your photograph taken when you arrive. However you will not have the opportunity to review this photo, and no other methods of submission will be available.

Wi-fi

Our Eduroam service is a wireless service which enables you as a UCA student to access the internet securely on campus, and when visiting other participating institutions by using your UCA login credentials.

A good wireless signal is available via Eduroam across campuses, excluding halls (where a separate internet service is provided by an external company, StudentCom, who provide wired internet in each bedroom and wireless internet in shared spaces). Eduroam is not an open wireless network so you’ll need to use your UCA username and password. Full instructions on how to connect on a Mac, PC, tablet or smart phone can be found on the IT help pages or help sheets provided by the ICT advisers in our University Library.

Tips for data security and privacy:

– Never share personal information such as passwords, even with friends

Saving your work

We provide every student with 5GB of personal network file storage. This can be accessed from any Windows or Apple computer on campus. We don’t provide off-campus access to your personal file storage.

When working on large project files, we recommend you work from a personal portable hard drive. We also recommend that you don’t save your work locally to the computer as over time this work will be lost.

Backing up your work

You can back up your work on portable hard drives, and more commonly, USB memory sticks. We recommend following these tips:

– Remember to always back up your work and have at least two copies of important files

– When using personal storage such as an external hard drive or USB memory stick, back it up and put your name on it in case you lose it

– If you’ve emailed a file to yourself, always save to a secure location before working on it

– Never save your work on the hard disk of open access computers.

Removable storage media can contract and spread malware and malicious code, so make sure you only use trusted removable media devices, only plug into trusted sources and use anti-virus software to scan devices where possible.

We offer a mobile app which enables you to interact with University services and access information. You can access:

Social networking sites

If you’re using social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to keep up with your friends and family during your time at university, we recommend the following to keep your personal identity safe:

– Never give your account login details to anyone and always ensure you log off

– Keep the publication of personal details to a minimum

– Be aware of what content you post and be mindful that you’re ultimately responsible for it

– Report anything posted about you that is abusive, offensive or attacks you personally.

Fees & finance

Fees, payment & financial support

The tuition fees per year for new students starting in 2017 are detailed in your offer letter, as well as any extra material charges that apply to your course. You can also view the current tuition fees for pre-degree, undergraduate and postgraduate students and find information and advice on student loans, additional costs and financial support on the fees and finance page of our website:

uca.ac.uk/fees

Our full tuition fee schedules and fee regulations can be found on our website:

uca.ac.uk/life-at-uca/fees/schedules-regulations

You should also expect some additional costs while you are studying your course:

uca.ac.uk/life-at-uca/fees/additional-fees

Undergraduate fees

Fees for undergraduate home students don’t have to be paid up front. In most cases, the Government will provide a tuition fee loan through the Student Loans Company to cover these costs.

Repayments for student loans are linked to your income. You only make repayments when your income is over £21,000 a year. At this point, you repay 9% of what you earn above £21,000. For example, if you earn £22,000 you would repay £90 per year (9% of £1,000). If your income drops below this amount repayments stop. You stop repaying when you've cleared the debt or after 30 years, whichever comes first. If you never earn over the threshold, you won't repay a penny.

If preferred, 2017 tuition fees can be paid upfront directly to UCA but this isn’t always the best option.

We would recommend that you look at the Student Loans Myth-busting article on the Money Saving Expert website for independent information and advice on student loans:

moneysavingexpert.com/students

EU students starting in 2017/18 will not be affected by the result of the EU Referendum, and you will still have access to student loans. EU students on the Erasmus+ programme in the UK, and UK students on the Erasmus+ programme in Europe, will continue to be eligible for the Erasmus+ grant at least as long as we remain a member of the EU, and potentially beyond this time.

Paying your tuition fees

To pay your tuition fees you must first complete the online enrolment process which you can do approximately one month before you arrive. We’ll send you information about enrolment in August.

Once you have enrolled online, payments can be made using the online payment system at:

uca.ac.uk/life-at-uca/fees/how-to-pay

If you are a self-funded student, you may apply to pay your tuition fees in up to six equal monthly instalments. If you want to pay your fees in instalments, you will need to arrange this with our Finance department before your course starts.

Whilst we recommend that you pay using the quick and secure online payment system, there are also cashiers available on all sites which can be used to pay tuition fees.

For more information please contact the Farnham Specialist Adviser:

An answer phone service is available on the above line for any out-of-hours enquiries.

Fees & finance

Financial support

UK students have access to a number of sources of funding to help with the costs of studying for a degree, which can be divided into two types – loans and grants.

If you have a disability, you may be eligible to apply for support with the costs of study. Look at gov.uk/disabled-students-allowances-dsas/overview to get an idea of what you can access. We also offer Specialist Advisers who can guide you to potential funding sources and offer you information and advice.

Full details about the funding sources available to you can be found on our financial support web pages at:

uca.ac.uk/financial-support

Financial support for international students

Overseas students progressing from a pre-degree course (including our International Foundation course) to an undergraduate course, or from an undergraduate course (including Graduate Diploma) to a taught postgraduate course will be eligible for a 10% discount on the standard listed tuition fee for the first academic year of the course onto which they are progressing. If you pay the discounted progression fee in full before enrolling, you will also be entitled to a 4% discount on the discounted progression fee.

See our financial support web pages for more information about the support available to international students:

uca.ac.uk/financial-support

If you have any queries about International fees, please contact our admissions team:

T: 01252 892838

E: [email protected]

Payment of deposit & tuition fees for international students

If you are from outside of the EU, you need to pay a tuition fee deposit of £2,500 to secure your place. If you haven’t paid your deposit yet, you can do this using our online payment system:

uca.ac.uk/life-at-uca/fees/how-to-pay

As the fee for international students is higher than the fee for UK and EU students, you will receive a discount if you pay your tuition fees in full either before or during enrolment.

If you wish to pay your tuition fees in instalments (maximum of six instalments) you will pay the standard fee.

Alternatively, you can pay by cheque or cash at the Cashier’s Office on campus.

Directions to campus

By road

From the M25, exit at junction 10 and follow the A3 towards Guildford. Once past Guildford exit onto the A31, signposted to Farnham and Alton. At the Shepherd and Flock roundabout head straight on along the Farnham bypass (A31 towards Alton). Continue straight over the traffic lights, then at the next roundabout take the third exit onto the A325, West Street towards Farnham town centre.

Turn left into The Hart. The main entrance to the University is straight ahead at the junction with Falkner Road, car parks are to the right.

If you’re using a Sat Nav, please use the postcode GU9 7DS rather than searching for UCA Farnham as some Sat Navs may take you to the wrong campus.

Parking

Some parking is available at the campus – our car park is behind the campus and the entrance is on Falkner Road. However, this can get full, especially on a weekday. Exceptions are made for blue badge holders, and anyone with special requirements should contact the campus directly on 01252 722441 to arrange this.

If you’re unable to find a parking space on campus there are two pay and display car parks nearby – the Upper and Lower Hart car parks (postcode GU9 7HA).

There are a number of other car parks located within a short distance of our campus – for further information please visit the Waverley Borough Council website:

waverley.gov.uk/info/478/car_parks/547/car_parks_in_farnham

By rail

Take a National Rail train from London Waterloo to Farnham (via Woking). It’s a 15-minute walk from Farnham station to the University.

Cross the railway tracks and walk down Station Hill. Cross the A31 and continue down South Street. Turn left into Union Road, which bears right onto Downing Street. When you reach West Street, turn left and continue for 200 metres before turning right into The Hart. The University is at the top of this street.

For train timetables, please see the National Rail website:

nationalrail.co.uk

Eurostar passengers should get off the train at London St. Pancras International, then take the Underground to London Waterloo (Victoria Line – southbound, changing at Oxford Circus for the Bakerloo Line – southbound).

By air

It takes between one and two hours to drive from Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted or Luton airports to our Farnham campus. There are rail and coach connections from all airports via central London to all our campuses.
