    Scholarships

    Regulations

    These scholarships were established in 2012 to recognise and support top students from Malaysiato commence either Foundation Studies or an undergraduate degree programme at the Universityof Canterbury. They are funded thanks to the generous support of our Malaysian alumni.

    The Universitys Malaysian alumni recognise the contribution their UC degrees have made to their

    own lives and to those of their families, and are funding these scholarships to help a newgeneration of students from their hometowns and regions to attend their alma mater.

    1. The following scholarships to the value of NZ$10,000 will be awarded to students who, in theiryear of application, are attending a pre-university institution or high school in the specifiedgeographic areas of Malaysia:

    a. Kuching Malaysian Alumni Scholarship: Kuching, Sarawak

    b. Sibu Malaysian Alumni Scholarship: Sibu, Sarawak

    c. Other Regions Malaysian Alumni Scholarship: geographical areas of Malaysia not

    listed above

    2. In each category (a., b. and c.) one scholarship will be awarded to a full-fee payinginternational student from Malaysia who has applied for admission to the University ofCanterbury by 1 November in the year prior to his or her intended first year of enrolment ineither an undergraduate degree programme or Foundation Studies. Applicants must be citizensof Malaysia; they must not also be citizens or Permanent Residents of New Zealand orAustralia. Applicants must have completed or be completing a university entrance qualification.

    3. The scholarships will be awarded by the Council, on the recommendation of a selectioncommittee. In awarding the scholarships the Committee will consider factors including, but notlimited to, the following:

    a. quality of achievement in university entrance qualificationsb. evidence of leadership potential

    c. involvement in cultural and/or sport and/or community activities

    d. evidence of international experience, which may include travel, attendance atseminars, and other activities outside Malaysia.

    4. Applications must be made on the appropriate form, which can be obtained from theScholarships website. Applications must be received by the Scholarships Office not later than5.00 pm on 1 October in the year prior to enrolment at the University of Canterbury, or, if this isnot a business day, by 5.00 pm on the next business day.

    5. Recipients may hold multiple fees scholarships.

    6. Each scholarship will be tenable for one year of study in an undergraduate degree programmeor in a Foundation Studies programme, and must be taken up in the first year of universityenrolment.

    7. The emolument for each scholarship will be credited directly to the recipients University feesaccount at the time of enrolment.

    8. If in any year there are no candidates of sufficient merit eligible for any one of these awards, noaward will be made. In such a case, the surplus funds will be carried forward to the followingyear.

    9. A condition of acceptance is that recipients will be willing to engage in University communityactivities, such as student mentoring, acting as University ambassadors, and being involvedwith University publicity as appropriate.

    10. In the event of a recipients withdrawal from the University the scholarship will be withdrawn.

    11. Continuation of the scholarship is conditional on continued satisfactory academic progress andadherence to the Universitys Statutes and Regulations.
