    UC International First Year

    Scholarships

    Regulations

    These scholarships were established in 2012 to recognise and support top international studentscommencing an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury.

    1. Scholarships will be awarded in two categories to students who, in their year of application, are

    either

    A. attending a pre-university institution or high school outside New Zealand, or arecompleting a Foundation Studies programme in New Zealand

    NZ$15,000 scholarships and NZ$5,000 scholarships

    orB. attending a New Zealand high school, and are graduating with NCEA, IB or Cambridge

    university entrance qualifications or equivalent

    NZ$15,000 scholarships, NZ$8,000 scholarships, and NZ$5,000 scholarships

    2. The scholarships will be awarded to full-fee paying international students who have applied for

    admission to the University of Canterbury by 1 November (Category A applicants) or 10December (Category B applicants) in the year prior to their intended first year of enrolment inan undergraduate degree programme. Applicants must not be citizens of New Zealand orAustralia, or hold New Zealand Permanent Residency status. Applicants must have completedor be completing a university entrance qualification.

    3. The scholarships will be awarded by the Council, on the recommendation of a selectioncommittee. In awarding the scholarships the Committee will consider factors including, but notlimited to, the following:

    a. quality of achievement in university entrance qualifications

    b. evidence of leadership potential

    c. involvement in cultural and/or sport and/or community activitiesd. evidence of international experience, which may include travel, attendance at seminars,

    and other activities outside the applicants home country.

    4. Applications must be made on the appropriate form, which can be obtained from theScholarships website. Applications must be received by the Scholarships Office not later than5.00 pm on 1 October in the year prior to enrolment at the University of Canterbury, or, if this isnot a business day, by 5.00 pm on the next business day.

    5. Recipients may hold multiple fees scholarships.6. Each scholarship will be tenable for one year of study in an undergraduate programme, and

    must be taken up in the first year of university enrolment.

    7. The emolument for each scholarship will be credited directly to the recipients University feesaccount at the time of enrolment.

    8. If in any year there are fewer candidates of sufficient merit than there are scholarshipsavailable, fewer awards will be made.

    9. A condition of acceptance is that recipients will be willing to engage in University community

    activities, such as student mentoring, acting as University ambassadors, and being involvedwith University publicity as appropriate.

    10. In the event of a recipients withdrawal from the University the scholarship will be withdrawn.

    11. Continuation of the scholarship is conditional on continued satisfactory academic progress andadherence to the Universitys Regulations.
