Letter from the ChancellorWithout question, my appointment as Chancellor of Berkeley is the crowning achievement of my career. As I settle into my new role, I am constantly reminded of the many ways in which our university serves as a shining beacon for all that public education can be. The talented students we teach, the path-breaking research we conduct, and the public service that we provide all reflect how well Berkeley pushes the frontiers of knowledge and expands our view of what we can achieve through higher public education. In short, being at Berkeley is thrilling — and inspiring.

I am equally impressed by how well the Berkeley community comes together to sustain the excellence of our university. Nowhere is our strength more evident than in the overwhelming response to The Campaign for Berkeley, which will result in more than $3 billion in private gifts to campus by the time it closes at the end of the year. With state support now representing just 12 percent of our budget, private philanthropy is more vital than ever in preserving the excellence of a Berkeley education. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our alumni, parents, and friends, our university remains strong — and there is still time to make one more gift before the campaign ends!

Though Berkeley ranks among the world’s greatest institutions in terms of the education we provide, including being the top-ranked public university in the US News & World Report annual rankings, our philanthropic leadership is also gaining recognition. In 2012, the Council for Aid to Education ranked Berkeley among the nation’s top-10 institutions in fundraising — and it is the only university without a medical school to be in that elite group. Clearly, our legacy of public service is inspiring our alumni to give back to the public institution that served them so well.

I am incredibly grateful for all that donors like you do for Berkeley. Please accept my heartfelt thanks.

Warm regards,

Nicholas B. Dirks Chancellor

New Builders of Berkeley

Elwyn Berlekamp

Elwyn is a trustee and former board chair

of the Berkeley-based Mathematical

Sciences Research Institute (MSRI),

one of the world’s leading centers for

research in the mathematical sciences.

The MSRI dedicated the Elwyn and Jennifer

Berlekamp Garden in honor of the couple’s

philanthropy.

E L w y n | J E n n i F E r ’ 6 6 B E r L E k a m p

Elwyn Berlekamp is a preeminent Berkeley mathematician whose research has provided new insights into mathematics through popular games such as Go. An emeritus professor of mathematics and electrical engineering, Elwyn is regarded as a founder of combinatorial game theory, which studies two-player games with no hidden information and no chance elements.

He also is an early founder of the field of quantitative finance. In 1990, futures-trading algorithms he helped rewrite led to a 55 percent return for a flagship fund at Axcom Trading Advisors that is now known as the Medallion Fund at Renaissance Technologies.

Additionally, Elwyn is renowned for his work involving error-correcting codes, which are used on compact discs and by NASA for deep space communications. With a fellow mathematician, Elwyn and his wife, Jennifer, established Cyclotomics, a company that developed encoders and decoders for both aerospace and commercial applications. The company was subsequently purchased by Eastman Kodak.

Elwyn has been elected to membership in a number of prestigious organizations, including the National Academy of Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. An MIT graduate, he traces his interest in game theory to a game called Dots and Boxes that he learned to play in the first grade.

Committed philanthropists, Elwyn and Jennifer have been recognized for their inspiring generosity by the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ Golden Gate Chapter. The Berlekamps met in Berkeley and have been married for 47 years.

Susan and Mark A. Bertelsen

At Berkeley, the Bertelsens’ longstanding

support, particularly in the area of faculty

recruitment and retention, includes generous

contributions for new faculty chairs at

the law school. Mark served on Berkeley

Law’s campaign cabinet, is a past director

of the Boalt Hall Alumni Association, and

has participated in every major fundraising

campaign at the law school.

Mark and Susan Bertelsen appreciate their top-quality public education and the doors of opportunity it opened for them. Partners in their philanthropy, they believe in giving back to the University of California, which they view as “the jewel in the crown of this state” and vital to California being a leader in the arts, sciences, and technological innovation. Over the years, Mark and Susan have been remarkably generous in their financial support and volunteer leadership to Berkeley, where Mark received his law degree and Susan her teaching credential, and to UC Santa Barbara, where they both were undergraduates.

Today, Mark is a senior partner in the renowned Silicon Valley law firm of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati. A business lawyer, Mark specializes in corporate and securities law involving technology and other growth companies. Mark, who earned his B.A. in political science in 1966 and his law degree three years later, served in the Army for two years. He joined the law firm in 1972 and was its managing partner from 1990–96. Among many honors, Mark has been selected for inclusion in the 2006–14 editions of Best Lawyers in America.

The former Susan Aas graduated from UCSB in 1967 with a degree in physical education and dance. She danced professionally with the Mason Kahn Dancers and was a member of the Bay Area Lutheran Chorale for many years. She is an active community leader and volunteer.

Demonstrating their philanthropic spirit and their advocacy for public higher education, Mark serves as a Berkeley Foundation trustee and as a trustee and past chair of the UC Santa Barbara Foundation. At Santa Barbara, the couple has endowed a faculty chair in computer science and generously supported entrepreneurial education and technology research. Mark and Susan have two children and five grandchildren.

Samuel D. Cole

Displaying his enduring commitment to

environmental protection and his admiration

for Berkeley Law’s pioneering leadership,

Sam established a generous planned

gift supporting the law school’s work in

environmental law and its Center

for Law, Energy & the Environment.

“Having seen all that’s happened to our

land over the years,” he says, “supporting

institutions that pursue environmental

solutions is important to me.”

s a m u E L d . c o L E J . d . ’ 6 3

Samuel Cole’s devotion to environmental causes dates back to his childhood. Growing up near the Appalachian Trail, he encountered the beauty of the wilderness and witnessed many improvements made by the Civilian Conservation Corps as part of the New Deal.

“If it hadn’t been for Franklin Roosevelt, most of that trail wouldn’t exist,” says Sam, who was raised in western Maryland. Sam dreamed of hiking the entire trail and managed to traverse a portion of it when he was 12 or so. His mother, a public health nurse, “wanted me to be a forest ranger,” he recalls.

Sam studied economics instead. A strong student, he graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1956. Sam later joined the Navy as an officer, and was stationed in San Diego and at San Francisco’s Treasure Island. Moving west in the late 1950s, Sam observed the pollution-choked air of Southern California and the environmental battles erupting in Northern California over plans to fill the San Francisco Bay for new development. “That’s when the environmental movement started,” says Sam, “because things were getting so bad.”

When his military service came to an end, Sam concluded that law might offer better career opportunities than economics. He headed to Boalt Hall for his degree.

After graduation, Sam spent 26 years as a legal liaison at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and performing legal work at Lawrence Livermore Lab. In 1986, he shifted his focus to the real estate business he had started in the 1960s with the purchase of a Channing Way rooming house. “I was in the perfect place at the right time,” he says of his investments.
